I have ordered a Wenger Ranger {gardener} today. For the last 20 years i have only had fixed blades, so this is a big step for me. I just got to thinking about the fixed blade vs folder thing, and have decided to give a folder a try. How do you guys feel about folders? Has anyone here gone from a fixed blade to a folder as your main knife? Cheers Peter

I still have and carry both. I typically only carry fixed blade knives while hiking or camping (have a couple in my vehicle though), but always have a folder or two or three on my person just for ease of carry.

I'm, with Crash, why does it have to be "Either/or?" Like Crash, I carry both. I prefer the Victorinox SWK but that's just my preference. Every knife has a purpose and i just can't see doing some fine whittling with a big 7 inch fixed blade. In his book and Video, "The Ultimate Outdoors-man," Bob Newman suggests and carries both. :cool2:

Gday Sarge47, and Rick I am not going to get get rid of my fixed blades. I will take them out when i am hunting, or making a new axe handle. I am just thinking for day walks, and over nighters, i could leave the fixed blades at home. I am not 100% sold on the idea just yet, but i will give it a try and see how it goes.

Remember, you can always get a sheath for almost any folder. This may help with ease of access when you are scrambling around. You may look into folders that have one hand opening. Not saying they are better but if you need it while your holding on to something, it's there.

Carrying one knife is a recipe to have no knife. IMO

Gday Winter, and Flatlander88 I have to agree with you guys, 2 knifes are the way to go. I have been carrying 2 fixed blades with me, 1 in my daypack, and 1 in my first aid kit which is in my day pack as well. I want to get rid of the daypack this summer.

I usually roll out with a Victorinox trekker in my pocket and a small fixed on my belt.

Of course I have another folder in my survival kit and a big fixed blade or axe on my rucksack.

This is area specific for the big blade/axe cause I live in a rainforest.

The other thing that i should add, that will make you go WTF. I want to go into a National Park, and head about 8 miles over land to a beach/ lagoon. No roads, walking tracks, or any over way of getting there except by boat. I want to check it out because it should be a good place, to spend summer. Here is the part that will make you go WTF, it's ilegal to take a fixed blade knife into a National Park in Australia. Up till now i have spent most my time in State Forests, and Crown land where it's legal to carry a fixed blade. Knife laws in Australia are changing for the worse, you can not walk around the street with a SAK in your pocket, cops will do you for it. This is the other reason for my sudden intrest in folders. The same as i like big guns, but a 22 is a good survival gun. Cheers Peter

You just have to learn to operate within the parameters of whatever you're given. Same as camping in the rain or hiking in a drought. If you can't learn to adapt then you won't survive anything very long. I'm certainly not advocating passive acceptance of bad laws. You obviously have to work within the frame work of law to get them changed. But in the interim it's what you have to deal with and you simply have to adapt.

In the U.S. you can not carry a weapon on Corps of Engineers property even though federal parks generally follow state law. If you want to use a Corps lake then you don't carry.

I have a Schrade 140t that i have cut the tang down{3 finger handle}, and removed the slabs from. What i am thinking about doing, is making the handle part of a folder that will fit the 140 in.That would turn it into a giant folder. The other plus is it would work as a super safe sheath.

Learning to adapt is the very basic of survival.

Because I carry my stuff in layers, Pack, belt. pockets. The small hand axe is in the pack, the fixed blade is on my belt. the folder is in my pocket.

I carry at the ranch when branding my Folder. When hunting I carry my fix blade, leathermen, and a small folder. Also axe and field saw in day pack.

You will be impressed with the usefulness of your new Wenger SAK. Daily, I carry either a Case Stockman or a Victorinox Farmer always accompanied by either a Spyderco Tenacious or a Kershaw Skyline. Always one these slip joints and one of these locking folders. The Skyline's 3+ inch blade is alot of blade for it's small folded size. It doesn't look like that much blade can be folded into that sleek handle. Very light weight, flat, and easy to carry. When out in the bush or marsh I add a Rat Cutlery RC3 on my belt opposite my .22 mag Single Six or Glock. SOOOOOOO, I carry both fixed and folders ''off the trail''. This system works for me. YMMV.

Gday Glockcop it's great sissors cut 550 with 1 snip, saw works great on green wood, and the blade cuts meat like a steak knife. Only thing is it's to big, to carry in a pocket. Cheers Peter

Maybe it's over kill but I always have my old schrade muskrat skinner in my pocket even when I go to church.(never leave home without it) When I'm in the woods or on the river I carry a Gerber Gater on the left side of my belt and a sheathed old Hickory butcher on the right. You might say my moto is be prepared.:>)

Gday Oldtrap59 i wish i lived in the States. The gun, and knife laws suck here. I have cut the blade on my Wenger down to a 2 inch sheeps foot. With a bit of luck no one will think it's a weapon.
