CATCHING PIGS -
There was a chemistry professor in a large college that had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab, the Prof noticed one young man, an exchange student, who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.
The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist regime.
In the midst of his story, he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked:
"Do you know how to catch wild pigs?"
The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said that it was no joke.
"You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming.
When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, which are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat that free corn again.
You then slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd. Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught.
Soon they go back to eating the free corn . They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity."
The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening in America . The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/Socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tax cuts, tax exemptions, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc. while we continually lose our freedoms, just a little at a time.
One should always remember two truths:
1) There is no such thing as a free lunch
2) and you can never hire someone to provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.
If you see that all of this wonderful government 'help' is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America, you might want to share this and wake up some folks.
I won't. Democracy just means that's what most of the people eligible to vote, who voted, voted for. If people vote for all that government 'help' then the tenets of democracy are being held up just fine woodwose. That's why I like to refer to democracy as a lynch mob without a noose. It's mob rule without all the screaming and the torches and pitchforks. I'm not suggesting I have a better way for a nation to form their government, I'm just suggesting that democracy is something that can really very easily 'backfire' on people.
Now....if people see those government "helps" as a threat to a way of life they believe in (and I hope they do)....yeah, then they should use their democratic right to do something about it. My fear is that most will just keep coming back for the free corn.
So the logical extension of this is social programs are an ill that America should not undertake because they undermine freedoms. Farm subsidies don't go just to corporate farms but to little farmers as well. And we should flip a well chosen finger at Canada and the UK for their freedom robbing socialized medicine, right? Here's a revelation, there is NO form of government that does not offer free corn. And those countries that are the strictest on handing out free corn have citizens dying of starvation and lack of basic necessities.
And who is robbing us of the freedoms? I've said it before on here. When someone blames the "government" they need to define who they are talking about. The FHA? That's the government. The USPS? Amtrak? CIA? Who is stealing our freedoms?

Is it not the great juggling/balancing act of any government...and almost every form of government for that matter to make that determination...how to get help to those who really need it without being scammed by PAC's SIG's etc.
I complain long and loud about the taxes I pay in this country, but on the flip side, I've never paid for a doctor visit or a hospital stay in my life.
Well, if we're getting all sensitive we can crawl back into our Prozac bottles, its' a point of view it's not partisan so I say nonpolitical....everyone has a point of view....

And let me guess, all of you will stop at every bridge you come to, drag out the soap box from the trunk of your car and go into a speech about how the tax dollars that built the bridge are robbing you of your freedom or schools or libraries or roads or sewers or clean(er) water or.....whatever. I will rest my little head on a soft pillow tonight inside a warm house because there are millions of men and women around this globe putting themselves in harms way, whether military, fire, police, EMS or whoever all paid for by tax dollars. Yeah, I don't mind paying taxes at all. And God bless all of you.
Heck no, don't delete it. Anything that stems conversation is good. Good to debate all these things. It's one of the many ways we learn and I don't mind that you posted it at all.
Heck people lets look at the practical use of the post for this site. Now we know another way to catch a renewable food source. No joke. Fence off 5 acres of woods with pigs and you will have food.
If you can afford to buy enough fence for 5 acres, buy food.
Or, figure out where Woodwose fenced off his pigs and "borrow" some.
And be honest. You love being the center of attention. You know you do you rascal.

Yep. This is a problem with a democracy.
For example, most people now live in urban areas and have limited exposure to guns except when it relates to crime. Because they have more votes than rural people who often have a culture of gun use and hunting, the city slickers can influence the anti-gun vote and eventually take guns (or try to) out of the hands of all citizens. And that means you.
Democracy in action is not always pretty.
Well stated double R, the only way for democracy to truly work is with an informed and participating electorate. Needless to say, I'm watching what's happening south of the border these days with some interest.
But didn't both of you just describe democracy? I'm a life member of the NRA and I don't want to see another law on the books but if a majority wants reform then shouldn't they be allowed to change the rules? Should the minority rule the majority just because we believe the same as the minority? (If gun reformers are the majority. I don't know that they are but let's pretend.)

If I believe I have the right to speak my mind...whenever and wherever I see fit (the common good clause withstanding, no shouting Fire! in a crowded theater just for the fun of it) and the majority of people elect someone willing to enact a law that says I no longer have that right....is democracy right?
I'm only suggesting that democracy can be dangerous. Hitler was elected, let's not forget. I recall two once rather well known axioms...."My rights end exactly where yours begin" (sometimes true, from my perspective, not an absolute) "when freedom has been outlawed, only outlaws will be free" (no argument out of me, I believe that was the intent/meaning of the original posting that was emailed to woodwose to some degree)

I always hear people complain about slavery during the 1800's.
What most people don't understand is that "government dependency" is the new slavery.
I have seen many able bodied individuals sitting on their a**es collecting welfare checks while feeble senior citizens work 3rd shift in some God forsaken factory trying to make ends meet.
If I want to help someone out, I am not going to give them fish their whole lives.
I will give them a few fish to start out with, but then I am going to teach them how to fish so they do not become dependent upon me. Once they become an able fisherman, they can provide for themselves then help the next man. And thus continue a positive cycle.
So I personally believe that many parties are at fault in the dependency cycle. The giver and the taker.

Not meaning to get back to Woodwose original post but .... a point to rember is that America (as in U.S. of) is not a democracy. It is a representative republic. Big difference which was designed to prevent mob rule.
LM - But that isn't a failing of government. It is a failing of an individual. My wife is an RN for an insurance company that deals with workman's comp cases. She sees the kind of thing you are outlining above on a daily basis. Why is Johny Butterbut on WC when he is quite capable of working? Because an individual authorized him to draw benefits when they should not have. A doctor didn't want to deal with him and marked him disabled. A claims specialist okay'd the doctor's report and a nurse fumes at the situation because it isn't right.
The same is true for SSD. Disability is in the eye of the claim holder.
How many commercials do you see that says, "Pay the IRS pennies on the dollar." or "Have you breathed air in the last 24 months? You may be entitled to compensation."
It's people who are too lazy to go out and work for a living. What is that I always say? Oh, yea. Responsibility.

Crashdive - You were so prophetic.
Your Bill of Rights (one of the great documents of all time) preserves the essential meaning of a representative republic, unlike the sad excuse that my nation ( a democracy has) Few realize the difference and thanks for pointing it out crashdive. However, I would challenge anyone from either nation (can't speak to the issues facing other nationalities who may post here) to show me who their elected officials are really representing in this day and age. Cynicism? oh yes indeedy.
We won't have these problems if ya'll write me in on the Presidential ballot as the new Dictator of the U.S. of A. :D If you don't vote then you got no right to complain. Thank a farmer or don't talk with your mouth full, and last but not least the government is slowly ever so slowly taking away all your rights, and remember Thomas Jefferson said:

Federal Republic - a state in which the powers of the central government are restricted and in which the component parts (states, colonies, or provinces) retain a degree of self-government; ultimate sovereign power rests with the voters who chose their governmental representatives.
In reality neither the Declaration nor the Constitution are democratic documents. Think about a group of men (minority) creating documents to govern the majority. Even though they were ratified by each of the states, true minorities were excluded (women and some other whites, Indigenous Americans and African American). A really long story but the age old Grandfather Clause stemmed from voting rights and the attempt to keep the above minorities from voting.
Three basic methods of representing the people.
1. Strict adherence to the tenants of the respective constitution (state or federal).
2. True representation of the majority will (some actually do represent their constituents this way.)
3. Representation by the elected's knowledge of what is best for the constituents.
Study for tomorrow's test.
1. Representing the special interest groups who paid to get you there
2. Lack of interest on the part of the electorate or lack of any interesting competition at election time (this includes a lot of elected officials, especially the ones that have been holding their office for term after term after term)
3. Dumb luck

Thank you darlin' but this dude is definitely NOT running for any political office. My opinion of them is consumately fair, I distrust and dislike all of them and have faith in no political system or party.
