The Euclid kayaker who went missing Saturday afternoon was found dead Monday morning.

The body of Vincent Germano, 43, of 20851 Edgecliff Drive, was found at 7:17 a.m. washed ashore at Maple City Beach in Cleveland, said Seaman Matthew Whalen of Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor. Maple City Beach is just east of Northeast Yacht Club, 14021 Lake Shore Blvd., Whalen said.

Euclid Detective Sgt. Mitch Houser said Germano was found by a resident walking in that area, which he identified as Dalwood Beach Club located at the north end of Dalwood Drive. That person then called Cleveland police, who subsequently contacted all of the investigating agencies, Houser said.

Photos taken at the scene were shown to family members who identified the victim as Germano, though an official determination will be made by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office, Houser said.

Watercraft investigator Richard McCullough, with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft, said Germano and his dog went into Lake Erie about 12:30 Saturday afternoon and that they were last seen kayaking about 1 p.m.

About 3 p.m., Germanos dog showed up at his residence without him. Germanos family thought hed dropped off the dog and went back to socialize at a party taking place at a nearby beach club, McCullough said.

Family members became concerned on Sunday when Germano hadnt returned home and hadnt tried to contact them. Germanos kayak was found on shore a few blocks from his residence on Sunday afternoon, according to previous reports.

About 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Euclid Police notified the Coast Guard that Germano was overdue. The Coast Guard, ODNR and police conducted a search throughout the evening.

Upon subsequent investigation of the incident, McCullough said Germanos dog was wearing a life jacket, but that as a result, there wasnt a life jacket available on the kayak for Germano to wear.

So when something went wrong, he didnt have one available to save his life which is certainly something we dont like to see, McCullough said.

We like to see people wearing life jackets, he said.

While were not sure just exactly what happened right now. It certainly wouldve helped him had he had one and been wearing it.

The investigation hasnt uncovered how the dog got ashore or how Germanos kayak ended up where it did, McCullough said, adding that his agency is gathering information regarding the water conditions at the approximate time of the incident.

Germanos death marks the 11th boating-related fatality in Ohio this year, said ODNR Division of Watercraft spokesman John Wisse. Of those 11, three have occurred on Lake Erie, including the June death of former Mentor firefighter and Fairport Harbor Police Chief Robert V. Dilgren, who was kayaking in the area of Overlook Drive in Mentor.

Five of those 11 deaths have been the result of drowning.

At this point last year, 15 boating-related deaths had been recorded in Ohio six of them on Lake Erie. Four of those 15 were drownings, two of them in Cuyahoga County, Wisse said.

Generally speaking, kayaks are safe, but the proper safety measures must always be taken especially on Lake Erie, McCullough said.

People go out there to have fun and for enjoyment, but if something happens to you in the lake, you might not be able to recover from it, he said.

The ODNR will handle the investigation as a boating incident.

Wear a PFD is what this says to me. However, it seems that if he had fallen out of the kayak, he could have just hung on to the boat and kicked it to short. This really doesn't make sense.....I wonder if alcohol was a contributing factor?

There wasn't a trip plan left with anyone so it was over a day before the family even thought of calling the authorities.

What was the family thinking when they saw the dog at home with a life vest on? If he dropped the dog off like the family thought, he surely wouldn't have left the vest on it.

thats why I thought alcohol was involved....not just the paddler, but the entire family. There was talk of a nearby beach party, etc...my hunch is nobody was in their right mind

Sad story, condolences to his family, but just goes to show you, you never know the "IT" will happen.

NEVER yak without your lifejacket,I had a boat dump me and I smacked my head pretty hard last year on the yak so it does pay to wear one.

I'll only be a few minutes. I can make it. It won't happen to me. It won't take long. You worry too much. I haven't died yet. What can happen?

Some pretty famous last words by folks that didn't bother to wear their PFD.

I knew a couple guys who died canoeing lake arrow head in Montana. It's a cold lake a their canoe over turned one spring. Well, it doesn't take long for hyperthermia to take it's effect. You've got to think "what if...". or, only blame your self.

Some things don't make sense aside from no life jacket.

1. Sat. 3pm dog shows up at home alone. (I'd try to call Vice and see what's up with the dog. I'd call repeatedly til I got an answer or something)
2. Sun. evening family becomes concerned that Vince hadn't showed up or tried to contact them. Really?!
If Mr. B hadn't showed up by evening on Sat or hadn't called or answered his phone, I'd have called the police or gone looking for him)

It's always unfortunate when something like this happens, but really, aren't people thinking any more?

That's why it's important to leave a plan. It doesn't need to be elaborate. When I go on my day hikes Mrs. Crash knows when she should expect me home.

Thats why I think they were all intoxicated.....I have noticed drunk people frequently make really bad choices.....Also, it seems lots of drunks congregate around lakes. If this guy was not intoxed- I apologize for my calloused, judgemental attitude. Nothing worse than talking smack about a dead person

The problem here is that you do not know the entire story. Actually, we may never know the entire story but hear are hopefully some answers for peoples posts. The house they live at is across the street from the lake where they keep their kayak at a small beach club. It was common place for Vince to take his dog, walk across the street, launch his kayak, stay out and then come a shore, walk up the steps from the beach and send his dog home to his parents house while watching him cross the street from the beach club. He would come home in his life vest, nothing out of the ordinary. His mother had gone to Marblehead in Sandusky for the day and his step father walks with a cane so is sort of house bound. Friends found his kayak and paddle on the beach next to each other and thought he went home. People at home thought he was down the street at friends for the night. This is a 43 yr old man who comes and goes at the house. He is not married no children. His cell phone was at the parents house because he was kayaking plus never really took it with him. There was a party going on at a neighboring beach club that night where he knew lots of people but he never made it.

Thanks for your post. If this fellow was a friend of yours I am sorry for your loss. I have had several friends drown kayaking and there is always accusations and judgements being thrown around after the tragedy. I guess its a way for the rest of us to rationalize the event and to justify to ourselves why "it cant happen to me, because I dont ____"(fill in the blank) . If my assumptions or guesstamations were wrong I am very sorry for opening my mouth and creating any ill will.

OK. Color me harsh, but...
A 43yr old man lives with his parents...comes and goes out of the house at will (treating it like a motel)...he never takes his cell phone with him...doesn't let his parents know where he is (of courtesy, if nothing more) not accountable, not responsible. Now dead.
Sympathise all you want. But don't stop there. This didn't have to happen, and if we could just get over this notion of indiscriminate reverence for the dead (not matter how sorry we feel for their loss), we could actually learn something.

I don't have "indiscrminate reverence for the dead"...I have respect for the ones who are still alive and grieving. Dying is easy- its be the surviving family and friends that is hard. Reading and hearing peoples opinions who don't know all the facts, or don't know the deceased can be very frustrating and disheartning- especially when the opinons being expressed are from folks that are misinformed, or only aware of part of the story. Bottom line...Passing judgement on people we don't know is tricky business.

We pass judgement here ALL the time based only on what's been presented. No one knows all the facts except those who have lived them or have intimate knowledge of how they played out.
Nothing wrong in trying to objectively and dispassionately evaluate what went wrong as we know it. One can ALWAYS learn from an avoidable accident and an unnecessary death. Well, at least I try to.

p.s. And no, dyeing is not easy. Try it and then let me know.

I agree judging an accident/event is a necessary part of learning. However- your posts (Number 9 &15) were not judging an event. They were judging the deceased.

ps- I don't think either one of us can say for sure if dying is hard or easy. But, I can tell you from personal experience after having someone die in my arms- that for them the pain (in this realm anyway) was over. I still however live with the pain, and will be haunted by the event.

Damn right. If not but for the fact he behaved as he did (no vest, no phone, drunk? etc, etc) he'd still be alive. Sometimes those things go together whether we want to admit it or not.
He, the deceased, by his behavior, caused the event, i.e., his death. (based on what we know so far) If I'm wrong, I apologize.

DOGMAN

You just can't say that for sure. Sober kayakers die every year wearing PFD's and carrying phones. All of those factors help minimize the risks associated with paddling- but they do not eliminate the risks. Kayaking is an inherently risky activity.

The point here (to me anyway) is not about judging the events surrounding the event. But, the judging of the character and lifestyle of a guy you don't know ....

"A 43yr old man lives with his parents...comes and goes out of the house at will (treating it like a motel)...he never takes his cell phone with him...doesn't let his parents know where he is (of courtesy, if nothing more) not accountable, not responsible"

We can discuss the accident, and maybe learn from the events without un-necessarily making assumptions about the guys character.

Bottom line here is yes, he should of had on a life vest. We have all made decisions in life that when we look back we might of done differently. Obviously, this is one.
He didn't treat the house like a motel, he lived there. People fall on hard times and need to regroup. I am sure to an outsiders maybe this life style seems strange but
he had gone back to school to get a better job was helping his aging parents with a house that was getting to big but they loved because it was by the water.
He knew most of the people who lived by his parents along the lake and would also spend times at their houses helping with projects cuz they were also getting up in age. This why him not being around all day wouldn't be a red flag.
I don't think you could find one person who had a bad thing to say about him. He didn't take his cell phone with him lot of times cuz it wasn't something he really cared about. This might seem strange again in this day in age but his mom and step dad don't have cell phones either. They find them more of a bother. They are nature people, in and around the water, at a park or simply in the back yard bird watching.. Still waiting on he coroner's report but the family thinks it was a heart attack.

Sheesh.
Come on,....... lets give the family our condolences and move on.
