I thought some of you would think this cool. The power is out and i am using solar / battery power right now its a combination of a 60 watt sunforce system and a deep cycle marine battery.
Actually, that is cool. Are you running a laptop off of it via the inverter?

Cool. Is that the one that comes with a 200 watt inverter?
I had really vacillated between a hand crank generator and a solar set up. I've since decided on solar for a whole lot of reasons and now that I've made the decision I kinda wonder why I even considered the hand crank. Anywhooooo. I'd be really interested to hear your pros and cons on the system. I know it's output is a bit limited but if you can charge a 12v battery you can operate a radio and that can keep you abreast of amateur and citizens bands.

I have been thinking about solar for a while and going without power for 4 days I'm going to install something.
I just picked up the SunForce system. I wanted it to keep communications runing if the power were out for an extended period. I can run that directly off the battery. The inverter gives you some 110V options as well. I'll take some pics once it comes in.

Rick, thats the set up i have the sunforce 60 watt kit. i put a deep cycle battery on it. I plugged the inverter in to my power strip for the pc, monintor, modem and a light. Ran it all for about 5 hours till i went to bed. I saw harbor freight was having a sale on their 45 watt kits so i bought one and just received it yesterday. It was nice to be able to keep radios and scanners charged without running the generator.
I had actually been looking at the 60 watt kit. I wanted something I could use at home but was portable enough to go mobile. Mine came in Friday morning and I picked up a deep cycle marine battery. I'll probably start hooking it up tomorrow or Tuesday and I'll post some pics on it.
I'm almost hesitate to say this but I am very close to having all my preps completed. (fingers crossed) The solar kit was one of the last items on the list. I have a couple of odds and ends to pick up but I'm just about done! On with living..................

Rick,
I have been using solar and a battery for 2 yrs. for the electric fence on the horse pasture. One thing to keep in mind if the sun doesn't shine for a week and there is any draw on the battery be sure and have a charger handy. I found it easier to use the relatively new high frequency technology charger and keeping it with the battery rather than lugging the battery to the charger. Also helps because it easier to monitor the status of the battery. I top it off anytime I see it isn't fully charged. May not matter to you for your application. I also "think" a battery that is used frequently charged and discharged and charged........will last longer. I have marine batteries in my boats of course and know that because the one boat is used year round (duck season) the batteries in it outlast the fish and ski by years...Another note I have powered a desktop PC, flat screen monitor and modem in a power outtage with a battery and 750 watt invertor for 2 days without any noticeable drop in the battery. Someone smarter than me could power a desktop pc without an inverter at least it would seem you could bypass the power supply in the PC and hook direct to a battery, a desktop PC is a 12V system. Another "thought" if you plug the charger into the invertor before the battery is too drained I wonder if in fact you could charge the battery using the battery.....figure that one out Mr. Minister of Science!:alucard:

I'll be interested to see what y'all think of the Harbor Freight 45 watt set up.
I have been looking, plotting, and planning for a while now especially out here at "The Place" (yeah spending some time here for a week or so).
Pert of my problem is that I get the, "if a little does a little good, a lot will do a lot of good"....so have been doing an energy audit, insulating, working on windows etc
It's easier to conserve energy that convert it for your own use.
So I haven't purchased any gear yet.
That said, I could have used a back up as we did lose power from a storm for about 8 hours yesterday, not a big deal out here, as the only major consideration would be 220v to run the pump....Generators are in the shed so involves them to be hooked up, and I don't bother if its only gonna be a short time.
We do store water for short term, as well as the shed's collection system.
Lights would have been nice, wouldn't have had to burn any candles, but DW solved the problem by saying"Lets go to town for breakfast, while the power is out".
Then went visiting.....
Got mine up and running the other day have a 7w/.58amp solar pannel in the window this will help keep the batt,s toped up, 1 batt @70ah the other @ 44ah will work towards around 1200ah the batt,s are in parallel so no prob,s on mixed amp/hr batterys will add more solar panels as i go. up to around 5amp,s charging would be ok i have plumed in the tv and computer and 3 lights and elcetric fire so far so if i get a power cut i can still surf the net will get to plum other lights in and around the whole flat as time goes on, the inverter is 1000w constance and max is 2ooow short time running.
the lights are 11w and 7w only and computer + 42 monitor comes in at under 400w so will get a few hours run time, if all goes well i will get some 680ah batt,s and put in the loft the more the better.
ps sorry about spelling but cant be good at everything lol.
I promised I'd post some pictures but the weather has been the pits the last week. Today was the first nice day I've had to put everything together. So here's the step by step.
Here's the parts layout. Checking to make certain everything is accounted for.
4 15 Watt Solar Panels
Charge Controller (smaller box with wiring right of center)
12' extension cable
Connector to 12Volt DC Plug
Connector to 12Vold DC Socket
12 VDC Socket to Batter Clamps
Connector to Regulator
Inverter (to the right of the charge controller)
4 in 1 connector
PVC Mounting Frame
Bolts and Nuts for Mounting
Marine deep cycle battery is extra and does not come with the kit. I picked up mine at Auto Zone.
I have sixteen bolts with washers. Those are for mounting the panels to the frame. There were two extra. I also had twelve bolts without washers. Those are for assembling the frame and there were two extras with it. All bolts assemble with wing nuts.
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar1.jpg
Here is the frame laid out for assembly:
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar2.jpg
The completed frame:
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar3.jpg
Another shot of the completed frame:

With the solar panels mounted to the frame: (I had another test going which I'll report on in another thread. You can see my heater off to the right)
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar5.jpg
This is a shot from behind the panels. They are connected together electrically and I'm taking a reading:
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar7.jpg
22.2 VDC in the early morning shade! That's not too shabby in my book.
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar8.jpg
Here I've wired up the controller. I'm not certain why they used pigtails but they did. You can see I used a tie wrap just below the splice to take any stress off the splice. The tie wraps don't come with the kit. You could use tape just as easy but I had the wraps.
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar9.jpg
The controller connected to the battery. Just follow the color code. Anyone can hook one of these up. Again, I used a tie wrap to take some stress off the split in the wire.
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar10.jpg
Here I've hooked a female cigarette/accessory receptacle to the battery and plugged a male into it. I'm taking a reading. I think you can see it's 13VDC.
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar11.jpg
Here I've installed the 200 Watt Inverter and I'm taking a reading at the AC outlet. You can see it reads 126.4 VAC.
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar12.jpg
This is just a pic to show you how the system lays out.
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar13.jpg
The system running a 60 Watt light bulb. It works!!!
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar14.jpg
I'm wanting to place the panels on the first floor roof but I noticed the wing nuts protrude so they would dig into the shingles, which I don't want. I can't turn the bolts around because the panels have a recess for the bolt heads and the bolts won't be long enough. So I picked up six 3 inch bolts and built some feet for the system to lay on. There are six of these on the bottom.
http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q348/safe_zone/solar16.jpg
That's it!!! It's easy peasy to put together. Anyone can do it and have a backup solar system that allows you to run some smaller appliances, certainly a lap top, a light or two, or battery, cell phone and radio chargers.

That's a great pictorial.......Thanks.
Is that the harbor Freight unit?
Charge controller drops fro 22VDC to somewhere around 12 VDC for the battery?
No it's not. The Harbor Freight one is made by Chicago Electric and is 45 Watts. Mine is made by SunForce and is 60 Watts.
You're right on the voltage. I'm going to have to scoot it out in the sun tomorrow and take a reading in full sun just to satisfy my curiosity but the 22VDC feeds the controller that steps the voltage down to around 13VDC. I honestly didn't take a reading outbound of the controller just at the battery so I was reading battery voltage at 13VDC.
I have to wait for some help to hoist it up on the roof. I don't need my wife to come home and find me doing an epic face plant in the middle of a smashed up solar system. She would not be sympathetic. And she's a nurse.
The output in bright sunlight is 24VDC.

I added a Second battery to the solar system. A third will soon be added. I will make a video soon about the 45 watt system. This was always in the back of my mind until the power went out. Then it was a very important thing. When the power goes out its too late to order a kit.
I assume you wired in parallel. Did you use a battery isolator on the second battery?
hunter63
09-13-2011, 09:25 PM
So if you are direct charging at 45 watts max, into 3 batteries, is that enough for them to take a charge @12 volts? @what amp output?
Seems to me that you would have to overcome the charge in the battery that is there already...unless it is way down to start with?
A regular battery charger puts out 12 volts but at 2, 10, or 50 amps jump start setting.

Pfffft. You're just in to solar porn.
That is so wrong, Rick - apparently you have a dark side........:dissolve:
If he uses matching batteries there is no need for the relay isolation.
I...uh...well....guilty, your honor.
I was just thinking about drawing off battery 1 and running down battery 2 in the process. An isolator will allow the panels to charge both batteries but keep the drain on battery 1 from pulling off battery 2. I hope that makes sense.

Yea sort off - if they are deep cycle - you won't be able to discharge them in a single night. imagine 17 watt CFL and having say 15 thats 255 watts on a 300 watt inverter. That would still be more thamn four hours of light for a whole house of light.

I dont have a battery isolater but i will be adding a third battery soon. This could add 45 watts to my solar power but it is more of a give away system
What do you mean by "give away system"?
huntermj
09-14-2011, 09:04 PM
By give away system i mean i dont own the land where i live. So in a bad situation i should at least be useful. As in have useful knowledge and or materials to offer. Like being able to trade a solar system for rent. Hopefully i will soon have a place of my own and not have to worry about this.
Hoisted the solar panels on the roof today and have the system quasi set up. It's charging the radios and some AA batteries at the moment. So far no flash fires and nothing has melted. That's a plus.

OK, here's a question, Whats the most efficient "electric" way to help heat a house? I would like to use this solar system to help heat my home this winter.
I don't think you're ever gonna do it with 200 Watts. Mr. HYVAC Hunter can probably help. You might be able to run the blower on your forced air unit since it's 120VAC and doesn't run continuously. But I don't think you'll ever run the heater coils. They are 240VAC. I would think your biggest drain for the blower would be start up but after it's running your watts should drop off considerably.
If you really want to save some money figure out how to run your hot water heater on it.
crashdive123
09-16-2011, 09:50 PM
Even with a portable radiator you'll need a bit more than 200 watts. The ones I looked at ran from 600 to 1500 watts. Don't know if that is the most efficient though.
hunter63
09-16-2011, 11:02 PM
Heater elements on water heaters are 8000 watts each and generally are two in each unit.
I becomes a math problem, watts in.... heat out.....My SIL was trying to run his on a 6000 watt Gen set....8000+8000 doesn't equal 6000 watts.
A 200 watt system will light 2 -100 watt bulbs.
A good estimate I have heard and used at the cabin in one watt per cubic foot of conditioned space.

Ya'll just gave me a good idea, I have a shed with no power and I rent so it's not worth me running power over there. But I already have 2 boat batteries that are deep cycle and the shed IS in full sun. All I really would like out there is light and I bet the $45 solar unit would be more than enough for a couple lights out there! Hmm some pvc and some wire and assembly vs. trying to chisel thru this rock hard ground for 250 yards to run hard wiring.

OK, here's a question, Whats the most efficient "electric" way to help heat a house? I would like to use this solar system to help heat my home this winter.
Heat Pumps are supposed to be one of the most efficient they can be be reversed in the summer to use as as air conditioners. The size and therefore the power consumption would depend on the square footage you want to heat and cool.
http://nordicheat.co.uk/air_q600.html
You know...I knew that on the water heater. I just wasn't thinking I guess.
Shiftyer - It's not $45 it's 45 watts. The Harbor Freight system does not include the inverter. You'll have to buy that separately so probably another $30 or so. But! If all you are wanting is some lights in the shed then you can use 12VDC bulbs right off the battery. You can get just about any lumen you want from dome light to spot light.

09-17-2011, 12:26 PM
My problem is that I over think things, rather than just doing it....Like y'all.
When ever I thought of getting into solar, I start thinking that if a little will do a little good.....A lot will do a lotta good......MORE WATTS!
I had seriously looked at doing a 1700watt system in a grid tied system, saving expensive batteries, found out that my neighbor up the hill from the cabin was the first person allowed by the Co-op to do this.
Coat was approx $35000 bucks, and he still couldn't run a electric water heater or base board back up heat for his wood stove.
He built a hay-bale solar powered off grid cabin, wood primary heat source, with a water collection system and all sorts of energy saving options.
In time he has connected to the grid, and in his words "sold out" as he and his wife opted for grid power electric to do the heavy lifting.
I still might just pick up a small system for the radio, computer, and a couple of lights....I do have deep cycle batteries for both the boat and the hydraulic dump trailer and a 300 watt inverter already....so I just up for the panels and charge controler.
If you are way off the road like SD then a solar system might make sense. When the power company wants 6 or 7 grand to build a pole line or trench in underground then you can reduce your payback time considerably. If it's new construction then it might make sense but I don't think a retrofit would be cost competitive with the science we have today. The payback for a $35,000 system for me would be 11.5 years. And that's assuming no break downs, no replacement batteries and the system doing 100% of the work.
The 200 watt system allows me to do some things here at the house, which will reduce my electric bill a smidgen but I also have the ability to move it to where ever I want it and that was the goal for me. A good sized portable system. I'm dinking with a company right now about a transport box for the whole system. They have about a gazzilion army surplus boxes but are slow as molasses on responding to emails.
hunter63
09-17-2011, 04:20 PM
I had always thought that a grid tied system in a seasonal place would be feeding back to the grid even at a lower rate, then use it again when you are there.
That seems to be the case to a point......But yeah my pay back would be high time as well, possibility longer tah the system and batteries would work well.
I do agree with your thinking, a stand alone mini system just to keep you in the game, in the event the power goes out, for an extended period of time, you still have some basics.
Portable system would be even better.
One thing to remember in a battery system, as long as the panels are open to the sun, they will produce power, so if unattended, you would need a way to "dump" extra power ( heater or some such, and a way to control it, when the batteries were fully charged.
I don't thing a 60 watt system would be too much trouble to handle, but it is a concern when running high watt output.
If things were really bad for an extended period and the grid was...well, off grid...a guy could barter to charge things. Sure, you can charge your GRMS radio. I'll need a half pound of rice. You have two? Make it a pound.

My little system is for emergency back up only. I can power the computer and a light and thats about it. I would like to do more but the jump to heating from solar is very costly. As i have now looked into it even a small heater will use 800 watts. I built a solar heater last year that works great but in my location the sun normally only shines "usefully" 60 days a year. thats a non-starter.
Well, I am a bit perplexed that my laptop is placing the inverter in overload. The inverter will handle 200 watts and a surge load of 400 watts. I don't think the laptop is pulling 200 watts so the panels must not be able to keep the battery charged. It's a really gloomy day today with pretty heavy overcast. We'll see what happens when the sun pops out. At the moment I'm too lazy to go out to the garage and get my VOM.

I have a couple of panels and a charge controller that I need to set-up at my work trailer (for the life of me I can't remember the wattage at the moment). They are fairly old, but still have good output on a sunny day (OK on a cloudy day. Enough to trickle charge a battery for stand-by). I already need to replace the deep cycle on the trailer, so I will do the install at the same time. Probably will not get much output in the winter, but I think it will still work for what I want. I still also need to change the DC lamps in the trailer over to LEDs. Should really improve the run time off the battery.
The dog and the wife went on high alert last night. Turns out the inverter was beeping because the battery voltage had dropped. That's a pretty handy alarm to have. It would be a lot handier if I could hear it. I guess I'll just keep an eye on the dog. She let me know when it was time to change the batteries on the CO detector a week ago.

The best way to heat a portable establishment is to understand that you must vent the bad gasses and exchange or radiate the heat. Solar isn't going to do that...

yup your right it's not 45 bux, i'm not sure where I got that from. I checked today and it was $169 or so. They also had a few other smaller solor items that may be useful for small things like cell phones or radio's. I have a bunch of inverters so that wouldn't be an issue.
But because of this thread light bulbs went off here! I really don't spend time in the shed at nite but I do run out there for this and that. I have 2 deep cell batteries and a couple headlights for trucks that I ended up with some how. I probably have a toggle switch out there somewhere. I don't know how I didn't think of it before, my last little shop/shack was run that way for the lights and radio. It was on a trailer at one time. I bet those batteries will run a couple lights for quite some time without a charge and it's not inconvienient to recharge them electrically.
I am interested in solar though and I think i'm going to read up on it a bit.
The skies have been pretty miserable lately. Heavy overcast. I can get through the day with the radios but by evening the battery is back down. I'd be interested to know what kind of set up some of you that live off grid have and what your charging times are like.

Harbor freight has a sale on one of their solar panel systems: http://www.harborfreight.com/45-watt-solar-panel-kit-90599.html
You'll need to purchase the inverter separately for that one. They aren't terrible expensive and you should be able to pick one up for around $40 or a bit less if you look around.
