Sorry for my absence lately. Been really inundated with work, which is not a bad thing, but I would like to get in some fishing time before hunting season comes back in. only a few weeks left till bow season, then black powder season is right after that, then rifle season. I'm excited and currently working my booty off to stockpile enough money to take off the week of christmas/new years.

As much as I hate it for the folks affected negatively by the storms months ago, I am really glad work picked up!! Barely slowed down since and still getting calls almost every day.

Only gotten to go fishing twice this year, so far, and still haven't had time to hike back to "paradise" for the pics I promised Winnie.

One thing I'm struggling with lately, is quitting smoking. Doing pretty fair I suppose, but it's very hard. Got that telltale "smokers cough" and decided that all that carpet glue (or is it formaldehyde?) and other crap they are putting in there, and instead I'm choosing life. The wife is quitting too, so it's great that we can support each other in quitting.

Garden finished making, so got it replanted and got sprouts about 4-6 inches high; squash, peas, and okra again. Once this crop is done, I'll be planting my winter greens: turnips, mustards, cabbage and probably gonna try some rudabagas this year. One thing I learned this year was that you really shouldn't plant "gourd" family plants near one another because they can cross pollinate. I didn't make any squash off this crop, but made a whole lot of yellow cucumbers with soft meat. Having two beehives right in front of the garden helped contribute to the cross pollination, I'm sure. We had far more cucumbers than we could pickle, eat, and give away, so many of them got "recycled".

So that's what's up with me lately. Busy as a bee (oh yeah.. bees are doing good!) and happy as a hog in slop (if there was any slop to be had around here..)

Boy, that's a good busy, YCC. It'll make Christmas time off that much more special.
Glad to hear you and the Missus decided to quit smoking together. I wish you all the strength and perseverance--If anyone can do it, it's you.
Think of it as the ultimate prep.

Glad to hear all is well and you're just busy. There is no doubt that is tough to quit smoking. Remember that it is addictive both physically and mentally and you're trying to interrupt that addiction cycle. Take it a day at a time or even a minute at a time if you have to. When you set your mind to something you generally accomplish it and I know you'll be successful here, too. Good luck.

Glad life is OK, I'll enjoy the pics even more for waiting!
Giving up smoking is tough, but I managed it last May and I can honestly say it was the best thing I could have done. I feel so much better, no cough, more wind(not that kind), my circulation is much better, immune system is great and, oh yeah... more money! Keep thinking of that week off at Christmas, if you save your "smokes" money, well I bet that'll pay for it! I'll be rooting for you.

Glad to hear you are doing well, I getting a little excited, as well, fall is my favorite time of year......so many things to hunt.....so little time.

As others have said - that kind of busy is good. Good luck on quitting smoking. Give the quitters savings plan a try. Put whatever you would have spent on cigarettes each day into a box. When it's time to do your Christmas or Back to School, or whatever shopping - open the box.

That's a great plan with the extra money!!

The hardest part of quitting is after I eat. In just a few days I've gotten down to half a pack a day. I'm recognizing the triggers, toughing it out as long as I can and when I'm about to go out of my mind, I break down and smoke one.
I gotta say the WORST trigger is the damned GNATS!! They want to eat my eyeballs out, I think. A great trick to keep them out of my face has always been to light a smoke, whether I smoke it or not.. just hold it in my mouth and the gnats won't eat my eyes. I gotta admit I'm gonna miss that repellent effect in the summertime, especially during the dog-days when gnats are at their worst.

Thanks for all the well wishes, guys. I need all the support I can get! Been smoking for over 15 years or so.. I don't expect it to be easy. The Mrs. didn't smoke a single one all day today, but... she's been working a job where she only gets one break a day anyway, so she's able to go longer without one. Still I know it's not easy for her either, but she definately deserves a pat on the back!!

Chemical dependency is a very real thing with cigarettes. I think it's the mental part that's the worst tho. That gremlin in the back of my head keeps saying "you've gone 3 hours without one, you can have one now as a reward". Gotta get that sort of thinking out of my head and try to remember it's not a reward.. it's gaseous death and there is nothing good about it.
Someone once told me it takes 21 days to make or break a habit. If I can get down to just 2 or 3 smokes a day, like after I eat, I think I'll have it whooped. Giving it a good ol' college try anyway. My goal is 3 weeks to 0 smokes a day. Doing pretty good for day 5!

Hang in there YCC, as long as you're ultimately one step ahead doesn't matter the few you take back.
If you can substitute one pleasurable habit with another you might at least break the cycle of having to have a smoke after a meal. Now don't go eating 1/2 a pecan pie instead of lighting up, but within reason...find something you like to do and get up and do it after a meal or whenever critical times strike.
Go out for a walk with your wife, a jog by yourself, call up someone you care about for a long-time-no-hear, or do anything different to distract yourself.
This is what has worked for me when trying to break bad habits. It's hard but entirely doable.

Just remembered. About that reward thing. I set myself goals. One week, two weeks, a month of no cigarettes and gave myself a major reward as I reached each milestone. For me it was food, maybe make up a wishlist and put something at each milestone. It certainly helped me, as did Nicotine patches. Don't feel the patches are a cop out, use them as instructed and they really can make a difference.

I think that's the real trick B. breaking that cycle. Eating sets off my craving, so snacking and chewing gum don't really work for me. Gotta figure out something else, like maybe exercise.. some cardio and pulmo to get my lungs cleaned up a little and just get through that craving. It's a work in progress so I gotta figure my way through it. Great tips and will definately be taking into consideration all the suggestions.

Winnie, I'm not sure, looking at the picture, but the gnats we have are small enough to go through my bee hat's veil. I tried to find some pictures of gnats like we have here, but didn't find any. Our gnats don't bite, they just go for places they can get moisture. I'll have to try to snap a picture. Gonna need a lot of zoom to see the little blighters tho...

Has anyone used the "Off" personal repellent clip-on things? I'm thinking of trying one, clipped on the brim of my hat. Not trying to turn it into a gnat thread, but yesterday they were really bad and boy, I just wanted to get some smoke in my face to run them off so I could work. GRRRR!!

Might have to get some of those losonges or the gum just for times like after I eat. Gonna work on getting down to only a few smokes and the worst cravings and see how it goes first. If I can't drop them completely by week 3, I'll definately explore more options.

I would not recommend the clip on thingy for your hat. The active ingredient, Metofluthrin is a type of pyrethroid (2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-(methoxymethyl)benzyl (EZ)-(1RS,3RS;1RS,3SR)-2,2-dimethyl-3-prop-1-enylcyclopropanecarboxylate) and having the fan blow it around your face and eyes is not a great idea.

Try this for the gnats. Wear a hat and tuck ones small branch under it so that the leaves kind of dangle in front of your face, but above your normal sight line. The moving leaves (as you walk or work) will keep the gnats away. Looks silly, but works pretty good.

Cools you off, and possibly keeps the gnats away.

@ crash. Good info there. Thanks. My mom often uses eucalyptus leaves under her hat and she claims it works. Bay leaves and basil seem to have some repellent properties, but I don't have any of that stuff growing yet.. The horsemint works pretty well, too, just don't have a lot of it yet. Gonna see if I can find one of those fans B recommends, maybe try that.

I don't think it is so much the repellant properties of the plant, but rather the moving leaves. Try whatever you have growing.

YCC - The gnats can be pretty miserable in the woods around here. I've found that a hat with a brim keeps them out of my eyes. They will be all over my face and when I put a hat on they just seem to hover at the edge of the brim. Kinda weird, really. They still buzz my ears and nose Grrrrrrr! but at least they stay out of my eyes.

Australians have corks strung around the brim of their hats, was explained that they keep moving and swinging, keep flies away. Maybe this would also work.
