View Full Version : A Painfull Lesson--should have known better

Last night around midnight, I burned my hand on a hot iron. (area between my thumb and forefinger--I'm fine now.)
Never happened before, but this time some things were out of ordinary. (still no excuse, but...)

We're having some work done at our apt. so Mr. B & I are camping in our spare (guest bedroom) with all sorts of crap stashed there from our own bedroom which had to be cleared.
There are stacks of clothes, linen towels etc. on every imaginable surface including the ironing board set up just for that purpose.
While I was busy in another part of the apt. Mr. B decided to press a pair of pants (had to wear them to work today) so he took everything from the ironing board, placed it on the bed and did the ironing. Then when he was finished, he put everything back on the ironing board, unplugged the iron and left it there in the upright position. I come later to get some stuff, grab the flat part of the iron to move it and feel the searing pain which makes me want to pass out.

I go to the kitchen and run cold water the area. I get ice and hold it on the burn for awhile, then put in in a zip-lock and hold it like that for another hour. (Mr. B runs in to help but I'm ticked off at him because I think it's all his fault so I tell him to leave me alone, I can handle it). So now I'm going around the apt. looking for stuff and handling things with one hand. Looking for Neosporin, looking for gauze bandage, etc. which I found & used. Took 2 Advil.
I thought I had meds & supplies well organized, but in fact I din't. At least they were not hurt user-friendly.

Long story short: I found out through online sources later (Mayo Clinic, etc) that I did a few things wrong and thank god the burn wasn't more serious where I could have done some damage.
1. No cold water--cool to lukewarm is better
2. No Ice! Putting ice directly on a burn can cause ths body to become too cold and cause further damage to the wound.
3. No ointments! This could cause infection.

So here's what I started doing today--a no-brainer system that would be easier to use when hurt and in pain.
Gotta zip lock bag, labeled it BURNS and placed in it everything to do with burns including simple, 123 instructions. I'll do this for cuts, eye injuries and anything else that could be organized in a single bag. If I have to duplicate items, between bags I'll do it in order to minimize looking in other places.
Nothing like pain, to make you re-evaluate the way you do things.

(Still ticked off at Mr. B for disguising the hot iron! After I'm done ironing I always take the iron and put it away in the bathroom away from everything to cool off.)

Not a nice lesson to learn. Glad you're not too battle scarred and Mr Bee has survived the encounter. (Maybe get Mr Tibbs to breath on him all night)

I recently updated my FAK. Added some burn gel sachets and replaced all the plasters and Steri-strips.I developed an allergy to the sticky stuff of the other type.

Well,, I see Mr B is a member in full and "good" standing in the hubby club. Sorry to hear about the burn, they are so painful. I like your idea about "dedicated" packages, will make crisis easier to deal with.

I don't think there is anything that hurts quite as bad as a burn. I hope you're better soon.

You offer up an abject lesson on organizing. The fact is we don't think too clearly when we are in pain so the more dumb proof we can make our first aid preps the better off we are. The one handed dumb proof first aid kit would probably be the pinnacle of survivor preps.

Well, I thought I was supremely organized when I had things like gauze, bandages, dressings and various tapes all in one drawer, ointments, topical antibiotic, alcohol preps, iodine swabs, etc in another, and generally stuff in a similar category/purpose all lumped together in their own drawers. (see through plastic & stackable in a closet.
But as I found out, opening those with one hand and taking some of the higher up ones down so I can look in proved to be difficult and really annoying. Space isn't something I have lots of so I gotta rethink this through carefully. This wake-up call actually proved useful...and the pain is subsiding. Oh, and back on good terms w/Mr. B. He's busy cooking dinner right now.

Get yourself an Aloe-vera plant to put in on a winda sill. Instant burn ointment and pain relief.

Swap a down low with the up high. We have a medicine one that is up a bit to keep the kids out of it but the first aid stuff is down low for just that reason.

You bring up another good point (I know, you didn't mean to) can you get to your first aid kit on your pack or belt if the hand on that side is injured? Trying to drop your pack/belt can be a bit of challenge one handed but can you reach across with the off hand to retrieve it? Might be worth checking now before you have to find out the hard way.

I keep my first-aid kit packed at the very top of my gear. and my trauma pouch sits on the outside of my pack for the reasons you mention.

Rick & Sarky, that's a serious consideration, thanks for bringing it up in this context. Configuring the BOB so that first aid/trauma kit is easily accessible especially when injured should be on top of the organizational list. Another thing I thought I did well but in light of what just happened it wouldn't have worked easily.
More work.
Gotta get an outside trauma pouch to wear around waist. (Right now it's inside BOB on top, but getting the BOB off is a job in itself)
Practice more getting to important stuff and working with left hand. (I'm right handed)
And much more, I'm sure.

I'm ambidextrous because I had to be. I'm dominant left had but growing up I was forced to use my right hand in all the shop classes (it's a right handed world, son. Tools are made for right handed people. Yeah, yeah, right). About the only place they left me alone was writing class so I write left handed. But I can hose stuff up equally well with either hand.

The one thing that is glaringly obvious about this whole thing, is that IF you had been on the ball, YOU would have had his pants pressed before he got home from using his golfin' irons, as you should have. Then, you would have known the iron was hot, and avoided all the problems that followed. OR, Mr. B oughtta find a job where he don't need pressed pants. That gets my vote.

Oh, my! You're going to be on the wrong end of a shootin' iron, probably feel the brandin' iron and the tire iron and get the golfin' irons wrapper around your neck. I'll be headin' out the back door now. If you don't have one just tell me where you'd like one.

As Sarky said, "get an aloe-vera plant". We keep several of them around the house and they are good for burn relief. Also I keep a partial FAK attached to one of the shoulder straps on the front of my pack. It isn't all I need but it takes care of alot of little nicks and bumps without having to get in my pack and is very easy to get too. I do keep enough in it to at least slow down a bleeder if need be.

Burns hurt for sure, and thanks for the reminder, "stuff" doesn't happen when we want it to.......

I carry my small first aid kit in my right coat top pocket in my field hunting coats, so reach is with left hand.
This is only the first line of treatments, aspirins, tums, bandages, alcohol wipes and a few gause pads for bleeding. It's in a folding wallet style pouch.

The rest goes in a fanny pack.

Well, now...
It might surprise you and the rest of the boys here that I do 99.9% of the ironing at home. I have a system and I've never burned myself before. Not once.
Mr. B is a better "ironer" and has really good common sense in all things but this was an out-of-ordinary type of thing which is why I believe he just wasn't thinking.
And yes, having a job where he doesn't have to wear suits and pressed pants gets my vote too.

I feel for you Ms. B.

I dumped a ladle full of hot lead on my left thumb while casting slugs a couple of weeks back. Still healing. Still hurts like crap!

Kyra, I got a buddy subsidizes his income casting various types of sinkers for saltwater fishing. Insists on doing so in flip flops. Just watching him dump that hot lead into the mold over his basically bare feet makes my toes curl into the heels on my Wolverine's. LOL

No pain meds...just kindly disposed at the moment.
Why begrudge a man who's obviously single and naive in the ways of the real world. Don't won't to burst his bubble.
Let him play with his irons, walk around in crumpled pants and make believe that's what real men are about.

The rest of you boys know better...and I expect that one of you will set him straight; if you're a real man, that is. :sneaky2:

I forget that people here don't know me, or my sense of humor, very well. There was most certainly no offense intended, and if any was taken, I apologise. I did run it by my wife, and she thought it was hilarious, but she knows me. My signature says it all, I guess.
