Well my youngest son and his better half did an overnight into Deam Wilderness last night. Temps were pretty good. Into the low 40's yesterday and melted most of the snow on the ground. They decided to cross a pond (did I mention it was low 40s?) across the ice (did I mention most of the snow had melted?) and Kelsey went through almost to her shoulders. Classic survival temps and situation. Quick hot fire, change of clothes, I had given them some chemical hand warmers and disaster averted.

"Why not go around the pond?" I asked.
"Just checking how thick the ice was."
"Well, you found out."

"I couldn't breathe," she said.

We talk about this stuff all the time and he's been all over the world hiking so he's pretty solid in his outdoor skills. I was a bit surprised that he even ventured out on the ice. He and I were supposed to go this week-end but they were forecasting 9 inches of snow and I chickened out so he and Kelsey went. We didn't get the snow but that was the forecast for Friday. I'll bet she was wishing I'd have gone instead. He said it was nasty wet and their sleeping pads and bags got wet.

Not surprisingly, my bed was nice and warm.

The last time I had a cold wet nights sleep like that was when I was along the English Scottish border training w/ the Brits. We had to camp out on the side of a shale covered hill during a terrential downpour @ 42 degrees. So idiot, namely a 1st lieutennent forgot to bring the truck w/ the shelterhalves.

Rule number one ... NEVER trust junior officers to do what they are supposed too. It's up to us enlisted guys to keep everybody alive and make sure the junior officers become senior officers.

Is one that people don't think about until after they've gone through...too late then. Often times, a person will fall through, and the body's natural bouyancy kills him/her. A person hits the water hard and floats fast, away from where the hole is. Their body will probably turn face up toward the ice, they can't find their way back to the opening. Now, a peer above the ice might be able to break through to where ever the victim floated to, if vision isn't blocked by snow on top of the ice. A person has mere minutes before hypothermia sets in, shock and/or panic are already setting in...this is one of the most common ways that people die in the winter on top of lakes, rivers etc. Rick, I'm really glad to hear that things didn't go a lot worse for your family, if Kelsey had completely submerged, you might have had a fatal outcome.

We had a thread earlier about whether or not one can trust ice in the winter time. I've driven cats and swamp buggies over frozen lakes and I've worked on very large drills on top of frozen lakes (that vibrate really hard on the ice), nevertheless there are a few precautions I always advise people to take, which I think are especially important to people who live in warmer climates. It's not just a matter of getting less ice on top of the water, when you have winter temps that will fluctuate from below freezing to 8 to 10 degrees above freezing, it affects how the ice forms. Often you'll wind up with a layer of ice with water and/or air trapped between it and the next layer. This is very unstable. The precautions...always carry a walking stick, the longer the better, a quick shift to horizontal might save you from going all the way down and you can use it as Rick's son was doing to test your walking area. Spread out, one person going through the ice should never mean two or three people going through the ice. If you have to help someone who's in the ice, get down on your belly spread your arms and legs as much as possible and crawl toward them, (it re-distributes your weight) use a very long stick to reach them or rope if you have it.

Oddly, on a little side note here, I wasn't even going to check this thread at first. I'm sure you've all seen how much of a wise-a@@ I can be, but I don't joke about this kind of stuff. I've lost friends this way and it's a very serious matter for anyone out winter hiking. Again, Rick, I'm just glad they're ok, bro.

Thanks, Bro. - Another problem with winter ice that I've preached to my kids about is towns and villages often use lakes as a source of raw municipal water. That means the water level can drop after the ice forms leaving the ice supporting itself with anywhere from 1 or 2 inches to several inches of air between the surface of the water and the ice cover. Very unstable stuff and even harder to get yourself out of because you are no longer at ice level but at water level several inches below the ice.

I am glad they are all right. The school of hard knocks are oft the lessons we remember most. I bet getting her out on ice again would be a chore not worth taking, for some time.
