View Full Version : Almost a new dog........Kinda a rant

Having breakfast this morning at "The Place", my three labs started barking at the door.
When out side to find a young dog, looked like a lab mix, head kinda looked like a pit-bull.

Nice dog, no collar, hungry, thirsty.
So fed him, watered him and tied him up, so he would run in the road and get hit....wouldn't have had to, he just wanted to come and sit next to you and 'touch".
Very friendly and minded better than my dogs......

Anyway really didn't need another dog, so started calling all the neighbors, nothing......then called 911 as I didn't have the non-emergency number and got my butte chewed for using 911... for a dog.....My bad, I guess.

So went looking for a phone book, finally called 411 on my cell, got the non-911 number for the sheriff, and called back.

Same guy answered the phone, so I proceeded to relate the situation, and was told that the tax-payers wouldn't spend the money for an animal-control person.......But after a fashion he did give me a number for the local volenteer group. ( I think he could have just related that first, with out the policical plug, so I thing the guy was kinda a butte whole)

Called the number, turned out to be the same lady that I had called about the baby squirrels earlier this spring, busy lady......
She checked her list of reported missing dogs, he was not on it....and related that she had picked up 5 dogs in five days, all just dumped off.

She had a volunteer family that took the dog in after I delivered him.

I guess, I just a softy but seeing this just really kinda pizzed me off.

BTW, This was the second dog that showed up here in two years, found the owner the last time.

I am glad he found you. Hope you can keep him.
Honestly, I don't know what's wrong with people who abandon their pets.

LOL, That's the problem......I already have 3 dogs, Maggie, BIL's dog we took in when he passed........Deacon, rescued him from a professional kennel at 18 months old,,,,has "issues'........So 2 special needs dogs and then there is "Gunner" the 2 year old, and he is just "special" LOL.
City I live in most of the time.......limits the number of dogs to 3....so full up.

DW was already falling for him, LOL, and the little boy was sucking up big time....to her.
I just hope he finds a good home.....

Good for you, Hunter. We've always rescued dogs.

If you get a dog just to tie him up in the back yard, don't.
If you get a dog to let him roam the neighborhood at leisure, don't.
If you don't know how to train a dog not to bark incessantly and all night long or when you're gone, don't get one.
If you don't know how to feed and water a dog, don't get one.
If you believe your dog won't bite, you're nuts. Any animal will bite under the right circumstances. Any animal.
If you like to take your dog for a walk, keep him on a leash and clean up after him. It's not my job to clean up after YOUR dog. That includes marked trails. Hello?
If you get a dog have it spayed or neutered and chipped.
In short, be a mature, adult and be responsible for the work you've taken on.

And here's an eye opener for you. Not everyone thinks it's oh so cute to have your dog jump up on them. I don't know your dog and he doesn't know me. That's not a good mix.

Up-date, just got a call from the foster dog lady.......Owner came and picked him up.
Turns out that they live about a mile up the road.

He took off the morning, but they left for the day anyway....jsut had gotten home and started looking for him........Some people's kids....I tell ya.
At least he is home tonite, and I hope that is a good thing.

How do you train a dog to not bark incessantly?

My dog that did do that stopped when we moved. I think its a territorial deal, isn't it?

My dog only barks inside the house. She might bark chasing a squirrel out of the yard or playing with a neighbor's dog but that's it. Dog's are incredibly intelligent animals. They catch on pretty quick and if you work with them any time at all they will pick up on what you want them to do. Obviously, the younger they are the better luck you will have. My family thinks I'm nuts but that's another post. Anyway, I use growls and show my teeth when I'm not happy with my dog. A good growl and she will lay down on the ground completely submissive. That's what the Alpha dog would do in a pack and since I'm it....

You should see what I accomplish with the guys at the jamboree and a little food. I know, it's going down the evolutionary ladder a bit but you just have to spend more time.

True. True.

If I have to growl at her then about an hour later she will begin to ease toward but never making eye contact. If I'm sitting in my chair she'll work her way over until she's at the foot of the chair. If I tell her it's okay to jump in my lap then she's knows she back in the pack and gets pretty excited. It's pretty funny to watch.

My dogs were just kinda getting used to the stranger.......The stray was a pup and going thru the gyrations of groveling down to Gunner, and were starting to figuring out the pecking order, when we hauled him off.

As far a barking, all of them will bark when at home, but we have had them at DD and SIL house and they get along, don't bark with the dogs that live there, so Yeah I believe that it's a terrory thing.
Letting them out is a trip.......5 black labs thundering out the door....and you need to count them letting them back in, quite a sight.

I'm happy he found his way "home', such that it is...........I guess I just seem to collect "strays" 4 legged and 2 legged....must the the big "S" on my forehead, for "sucker".

Its the economy. I have seen this many times in the past. People think that the dog will find a home in the country, but they usually only find a bullet in there guts.

When my step-dad passed his dog was not in the best of shapes and was difficult to manage; frightened and aggressive, etc. We had to call the sheriff's department and we lucked out. the deputy sheriff's spouse worked for animal control or a vet or some similar and they were happy to take care of her. i think they ultimately decided to adopt her themselves. I hate to think what would have become of her if it hadn't worked out so well.
