I'm torn about these stories. On the one hand yes it's great that he has the resilience and training to take care of himself for a night, and in other cases a few days, but on the other hand when scouts get lost it's because one of the cardinal rules of scouting have been broken; the buddy system. I was a scout and we always had two things when we in the woods, a buddy and a whistle. Between the two, there should be almost no reason why any scout would get seperated from the others.

That is a good point JP. The same was true when I was in the Scouts, however we must remember that sometimes a 12 year old is first and foremost a 12 year old and secondly a Scout. I think the important thing that these sort of stories bring out is that while something that shouldn't have happened did, the young boy or girl was able to rely on things that they had learned to survive. At the tender age of twelve they have not mastered things and are still learning. Funny - my wife tells me that a lot - and a couple of years past twelve.

Oh, I'm well aware that it happens (as evident by so many of these stories), and I'm well aware that of the attention span of a 12 year old. Being an Eagle Scout myself, I think it's always awesome that these stories have a happy ending because of the kids education. I just hope troops are using these stories to teach with, and not just the look what he did while by himself part, as all media outlets focus on, but how not to get seperated too.

That might be a good lesson the scout leaders on here can bring home because of your insight.

True, that and teach the kids as soon as they can't see anyone, blow their whistle loud three times and wait a set time for a response. If they don't hear one, blow again. The odds of hiking to far that you can't hear a whistle is low.

I never got lost in scouts. I did lead the entire troop down the wrong trail for about a mile, but never got lost... lol. I have dealt with 2 cases of early onset hypothermia though and a leg injury on a short hike. Neither of those were fun.

Yeah, on the one hand he did get into a jam because he didn't follow "the code", but it's hard to pile on much- he's just a kid. He survived due to the training and skills he learned as a Scout, so that's a win.

BUT...no food, water or adequate clothing? Not smart! I hope he learned a valuable lesson. And I hope it's a "teachable moment" for other people that might one day be in his situation.

Oh trust me,sometimes your "buddy" might not be all that much of one at all.
Along with all the good things that happen in the scouts there are some serious alpha dog stuff that goes on.


I can remember trecking back to camp alone after a failed survival badge outing at Treasure Valley.My two counterparts had
packed up and headed back after a heated argument over the shelter.
I am quite thankful I ran into a couple of older scouts that were close to getting Eagle.
They invited me to join them and got my belt badge for survival.Turned out to be one of the best times I had.
