Sorghum Plant

I have a volunteer sorghum plant growing in my garden this year. I'm sure the seed came from a bird feeder and was deposited by a bird or ground squirrel. I've been doing some research on sorghum seeds and it turns out they are about 90% nutritious per volume of weight as corn. The seeds can be popped like popcorn or ground into a flour, which happens to be gluten free.

Also known as milo, sorghum is a very drought tolerate plant. This one growing in the garden has done very well this year despite both heat and drought stress. Grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is considered to be one of the four most important cereal grains used for human consumption. And that I did not know. You can even make opaque beer out of it or a porridge like soup.

Each grain head produces between 750 and 1250 seeds!

Fun Fact: Sorghum does not contain carotene, a source of Vitamen A and pigmentation. If chickens are fed only sorghum they will produce eggs with pale yokes. They will also develop pale feet and skin!

As you know, corn must be planted in a "block" in order to pollinate. Sorghum does not have that requirement as demonstrated by this lone guy. I think I'll save some of the seeds for next year and some to play with for eating.

The farmers around here used to grow a lot of sorghum until a few years back. It may be a crop rotation thing and they may start growing it more in the future.( IDK, not a farmer)
Right now all I see growing is corn, soy and lima beans.

Sorghum used to be grown quite abit by the Amish that lived in the part of Iowa that I come from. Dad used to buy some from them in the fall each year. Remember seeing them crushing the plants in a machine turned by their horses. After it was crushed and the liquid scweezed out they would cook it down to a syrup that was very tasty. Good on biscuits,pancakes or on top of a bowl of oatmeal. Mom used it alot in cooking also. Don't ever remember using the grain part but then maybe the Amish used it for animal feed. Don't know.

I had gotten some seed for sorghum from a friend, idea was to grow some and try to make syrup.

Grew a couple of rows in my garden, was really into organic gardening and Mother Earth News magazine, and trying this kinda stuff at the time.

Found a wood and hard rubber "wringer" at a yard sale, (you saw it pictured in DW's washing machine thread, awhile back)

Had a good crop, and started wringing down the seed heads, and got quite a bit of juice.....every where....LOL.

This stuff was sweet and sticky....and kind green looking.

Ended up with a small baby food jar about 1/2 full after boiling down.
Lots of work, but do-able.

I cut one of the heads today and I'm going to trying extracting the seeds. I'm going to try popping about half the seeds and saving the other half for next year. I have about 5 more heads I can harvest.
