Re: Plasters (Bandaids?)

You may recall a few weeks ago I discovered I had an allergy to a type of plaster(bandaid?) Well I've now done some testing of a variety of plasters and here are the results.

All washproof/waterproof types - positive result.

Several Supermarket own brand fabric type - positive result.

High end named brand fabric type - negative result.

High end named brand fabric strip - negative result.

St John Ambulance fabric type - negative result.

Brand recommended by Practice Nurse (Glo-Med) - negative result.

So, it would appear that the cheaper over the counter plaster is the offender. The type recommended by Practice Nurse are inexpensive, but only available by Mail order. They are the brand used at the Surgery.


A Cautionary Note. I also trialed the Steri-strips (wound closures?) I have, and yup, I'm allergic. Going back to Practice Nurse to discuss.
So, if you are allergic to some plasters may be worth checking other sticky stuff First Aid items too.

Camp, it was a purely selfish trial. The last thing I need was allergic dermatitis on top of an injury! The tests were carried out over a series of weeks, so I had time to heal after each test.

I remember that test well, Crash.LOL

Winnie, Are you aware of having an allergy to Latex? Some bandages use a less expensive latex or natural rubber in the adhesive. Many people are sensitive to latex contact with skin. I have a friend find out after having a medical examination and the areas were the nurse touched her while wearing latex gloves became very red and irritated.

Latex allergies can very quite a bit, from a mild irritation to anaphylactic shock and death in severe exposure for someone very sensitive.

Latex in in a lot of products that may surprise you. You just don't think about it. Condoms elastic waistbands and rubber pads on sporting equipment are just a few that come to mind.

The big clue was the "Less expensive brands" causing a reaction. I worked for an adhesive manufacturer that discontinued manufacturing medical adhesives with latex for that reason.

You can search Latex Allergy in Google images to see some what the reaction looks like.

Oh I've seen what the reaction looks like! I have the tube of Betnovate cream to prove it:) Mind, it's not as bad as the reaction I have to Nickel. Now that's really nasty!
