Survival Guide/Book

[Black Hole]

I am looking for a survival guide/book to help teach me the basic of wilderness survival (fire starting - without matches or flint, shelter building, water pur., food, traps, ect..) Example: I got lost in the wilderness with only a knife and a little bit of rope.

I have looked at a couple of books at my local store, but they are old and the drawings are not that great. I have also looked on Amazon and found several books, but not sure what to get. Any ideas???

I've always loved "How to stay alive in the woods' Angier. Old book with drawn photos. That in weatherproof paper and a good local edible plant guide, weatherized, should be a good starter.

There are a number of texts you can look at for free. The first one is the Army Survival Manual. You'll glean a lot of information from it.

Well there is a book that was written WITH Photo's as well as some drawings, by a man in your part of the country. The Book and author are: Outdoor Survival Skills By Larry Dean Olsen. It even has color plates of some of the edible plants for your environment.

Thanks for your reply BH. Some very good books have been listed. I hope you hang around the forum and join in. It is my firm belief that while reference materials are great, as are first hand accounts of things being done by others, getting out and practicing as much as possible is the most valuable "teacher" available. Since you seem to have experience camping, you can pick a skill that you want to learn. Practice it, and then when camping utilize what you have learned. If it's primitive fire making I would urge you to still bring what you normally make fire with (lighter, matches, ferrocerium rod, etc) but don't use them unless it becomes an emergency. Same thing with primitive shelters. This way you have a back-up in an emergency. Keep in mind - being miserable is not necessarily an emergency. No fire the first night? Unless it truly is vital to have it, then do without. Hope that all make sense.

I like John and Geri McPherson's books, but they relate to primitive survival skills. Right up your alley if you want to do more with less.

One of our members, FinallyME, lives out your way. He is a Scoutmaster and gets out a lot. He can possibly help you. The best survival tool you can use is not equipment or a book, but inside you, it's called "the will to live." Good luck in your endeavors. :cool2:

I suggest you find an older edition of the "Boy Scout Handbook," pre-1985. There is an incredible amount of information there which you can practice and utilize.
