Seems real labor intensive, but I wondering if the forked stick bearing block may be used for a bow drill?

Another detail is simply the leather gloves, which is a standard in just about anything I do out doors, never gave it a thought to include them in a BOB or pack or whatever.
I carry/use some kind of gloves in just about every coat, hooded sweat shirt (can't seem to bring my self to call them a hoodie), tool box, vehicles, etc.......I like the protection from thorns, splinters, bugs, even stinging nettles....above and behond cold and wet.

yes i have seen this -it's pretty neat.part 2 is because a couple of people questioned his editing so the poor guy had to redo the whole technique to prove it.he's a pretty solid bushcrafting guy and i have watched many of his video's -highly recommended

My impression is that a fire drill needed to reverse directions to be effective.....Might be wrong?

I wouldn't want to use this method, but I like this guys videos. He seems to provide a lot of good tested skills that are not entirely common.

Those were pretty good videos. They cemented two things for me. 1 - I hope that I will not need to rely on this method for starting a fire (but it was pretty slick), and 2 - I will never own an SP-8. Despite what was said in the vid, I would much rather rely on a good camp axe.

It doesn't have to reverse direction to work. You can put a stick in your (electric) drill and drill in one direction and get an ember. The stop and change of direction actually allows your materials to cool ever so slightly, being a hinderance to the firemaking process.
