Gamma Seal Lids for sealing 3.5 to 7 gallon buckets

These lids have been mentioned before so I thought I would start a thread on them. They're reasonably priced and work well. They come in a verity of colors for color coding your stored items. You can turn a typical 5 gallon bucket into a water-tight storage container. If the bucket you're using is a food grade bucket, you can store food items like grain or cereal without a liner. You can purchase these lids from a verity of suppliers.

Good reminder.
Now if there was a good way to purge the air out.....would keep the moisture and bugs out.
I have tried dry ice, ...let it evaporate displacing the air.....but could never get a good balance between popping the top..sealed too quick or leaving air inside.
Too bad they didn't make them with a one way air lock....purge till the pressure equalizes, the slam shut.

You should still use a mylar liner as the buckets themselves are still permeable. They used to come in only white and black which made it tough for filing your buckets by color code. Now it is a lot easier.

That could be handy in some applications. Downside is that you have two seals to leak instead of just one. A plain gasket seal lid would probably be better for long term storage but you could switch to the screw on lid when you start to use the contents. Would beat a half closed standard lid.

I was looking at standard 5 gal lidded buckets and related types recently.

Options for lids include:

round vs square, depending on bucket type
Flip top lid option for square lids (seal questionable)
gasket or no gasket
shipping seal (required when shipping): none, pull tab, or slits
seats: none, toilet seat, baseball seat
bung hole: yes or no
screw lid: internal thread, external thread, none


One vendor was saying that some buckets were about 70mils thick instead of the normal 90mils (thousands of an inch). Square buckets were typically 4 gallons or 6.5gallons instead of 5gallons. 6.5 gallon should take up about the same amount of volume as a 5 gallon round (5gallons*4/pi = 6.3661977 gallons).

Some accessories available include the tool organizer bag which fit around bucket, organizer trays, dolleys, strainers and screens, handle grips, opener tools (and mallets for closing),grit guards (for washing cars), spigots (for home brewing or beverage dispensing), bung hole pumps, bucket clips to hold tubing, plastic pail liners, and special hand trucks. And oxygen absorbers, desicators, and metalized mylar bags. Fermenting buckets are available with graduations on the sides.

Some 3.5, 4.25, 5, 6, 6.5, and 7 gallon round buckets can use same lids. Square sizes may not be as standardized, some are 10" wide, some 12", some are rectangular.

I use the gamma lids for stuff that is already opened, and I am constantly opening and reusing. So, for instance, if I have 10 buckets of wheat, one will have a gamma lid, and the others a normal lid. The gamma lid is for the bucket I am currently using. I am not going to use all the contents at one time, so it is an easy to open and reseal lid. Gamma lids are 6 X more expensive than a normal lid.
