View Full Version : Bladder vs. Water bottle

1st, I understand that there are those on here that prefer a water bladder to a canteen or water bottle and that's fine. I'm not here to discourage the opinions of those who prefer the water bladder, but to give my reasons for choosing the hard plastic Nalgene water bottle.

1.) The water bladder uses space in the pack that could be used for other equipment that may not be able to be transported in any other manner, say on the belt or in a cargo pocket, for example. A Nalgene bottle can be placed in a "water bottle carrier" and hung, canteen-style," from your belt.

2.) Keeping your water source in your backpack is like "putting all of your eggs in one basket." Lose your pack you lose your water; this could have deadly consequences in a survival situation.

3.) Cleaning the bottle is a lot easier than cleaning a water bladder as you can simply place the water bottle in a dishwasher. The bladder needs a "cleaning kit" to do the job properly, has to be removed from the pack, then replaced, etc..

4.) The graduations on the side of a Nalgene water bottle make it a breeze to measure ingredients for cooking on the trail. Impossible to do with a bladder.

5.) Even though there is supposed to be a way to get rid of the plastic taste in the water filling the bladder, it still takes time and much effort to do it properly. The nalgene bottle does not have that problem.

6.) The new Nalgene bottles are now "BPA free," eliminating the unproven fear of causing cancer.

These are my reasons for choosing the Nalgene water bottle. :cool2:

I like to use the Nalgene stainless steel "Guyot" bottle. It has the same benefits as the plastic ones plus, it can take a hard beating and I can boil water in it. The only thing mentioned that it doesn't have are the graduated marks, but those can be etched in if you wanted them.

7.) Every camelbak I have ever had, leaked (only 3, so small data set). They either leaked where the hose connected, or the seal on the fill cap. I fixed all the leaks with new o-rings and by cutting the tube shorter and pushing it back on. But, given more time, they leak again. You don't want a leaky bladder in your pack soaking all your gear.

8.) The bite valves leak as well. Camelbak makes good ones that don't leak, but the cheaper bladders have cheaper valves, and they like to leak. You can get around this by how you position it. But, it is a pain.

9.) Bladders take more care time to keep fun stuff from growing inside while you store it. I use a gatoraide or poweraide bottle, so they are lighter than nalgene and bladders, and I throw them away when I am done with them. Of course, nalgenes can be put in a dishwasher, unlike bladders.

10.) It is hard to do water purification rotation with one large bladder, as opposed to several smaller bottles.

Give me some time, I will think of more. :)

9.)

Who says you can't put a bladder in the dish washer? Shoot, just shove that rascal in there and stand back. If you can poach salmon in a dishwasher surely you can wash a bladder in there.

I was researching those on Amazon & found some negative remarks about cleaning them. Seems like they accumulate dirt and grime around the thread area, among oether hard to reach places. Anyway, they do look tough, but they cost twice as much!

I have never tried a bladder, still and canteen/water bottle guy....haven't been swayed to go to one.
Now if they had one that held the fizz on beer....I would think about it.

I use a toothbrush to clean around the threads and a small hand towel on a long wooden spoon to clean the inside. The o-ring to make the seal can be removed and replaced if you wanted, but I just scrub it down with the toothbrush as well.

They do cost more, but I liked my first one so much I bought a second. One stays "presentable" and the other has been in fires and has been scratched up with steel wool to remove soot.

I use both. My main hydration bladder is a 6 liter model, the one in my E&E kit is a 3 liter model. I also have a nalgene bottle for mixing up electrolyte drinks as I don't want to contaminate my bladders. I don't have any problems with the bladder leaking around the fill cap as that is not how I fill my bladder. I pop off the bite valve and plug in an adapter which attaches directly to the output of my MSR Mini Works II. I don't even have to take my back pack off to refill the bladder.

Another thought for those who like to keep their water supply with their packs. You can push a carabiner through the lid loop and hangit from your pack, or if you want to use Maxpedition's "Grid-Locks, they work just as well. Another thing you can get is one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300560538254&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I just ordered this on, it's the larger size so it holds extra stuff and saves the room in a smaller pack that can be used for other things! :balloon:

I have retired my Nalgenes. I either use a 2 liter bladder or a military canteen. I have the standard 1 quart and two quart versions.

Sarky - Where in the name of Hanna are you dragging a 6 liter bladder? That's 13 pounds of water!

I have both sizes of military canteens as well and the military web-belt harness that can help carry them if I need too. C'mon Sarky, 'fess up! :balloon:

I like the 2 liter canteen because it can collapse much like a bladder as the water is used up. That's a draw back, IMO, to the standard canteen or the Nalgene. I know there are some new collapsible 1 quart canteens on the market.

How about a compromise Rick?

I've actually looked at those. I think Nalgene has the right idea. Sadly, I'm too set in my ways. Canteens are supposed to be OD. There's a law written some place I'm sure. I just don't like the water sloshing around in a half empty canteen or bottle. I kicked up a deer on a trail last summer and I'm convinced she heard the water sloshing in the canteen. Of course, being 3/4 deaf it could have been a 2 inch stick I stepped on. Nah, it was the water.

I also carry a Platypus folding bag. It holds two liters. It's really nice when you make camp to have that extra capacity. I carry MRE style meals, mostly so I don't have a big need to cook with water but it's still nice to have extra water in the evening and for breakfast. It's also nice if you know you are hitting a dry area. But I sure hate packing a couple of liters of water.

Like Sarky, I use both... never enough water, and both styles have their advantages!

I can carry a total of 10 liters IF i absolutely have to. I would rather have the capacity and not need it then need it and not have it! Just think about what 6 one liter canteens weighs as opposed to my 6 liter bladder.

A litle bulky, but I like to carry the military canteen with canteen cup. The metal cup I cook/boil water in, etc. It can attach to your pack, or I clip it to my belt, and away I go.

Rick

I'm the same way. Since I use A-Pack meals the canteen and cup are just about all I need for cooking. Add my MSR pocket rocket or an Esbit stove and you're good.

I hear what you're saying, Sarky, and I have been caught out on a dry trail. It's not much fun. I wound up using water from a very questionable source and just got lucky. I didn't get sick. I was more concerned about chemicals that anything else. But hossin' that much weight is a problem for me. I've packed 1 gallon and 2 liters (I'm not doing the math) uphill along with everything else and it sucked big time.

I use both but for drinking while backpacking or canoeing, I like the badder. The Platypus is my preferred brand, no bad taste to speak of. When on the move, taking small sips of water regularly keeps me hydrated. (deters gulping down water) I've never had a problem finding a place in my pack to tuck away a 2-liter bladder. The combination of water bladder and water bottles take care of all my water needs. I just like the bladder when I'm on the move.

I use both. Drinks are mixed in the water bottle and placed in the bear bag at night. The hydration bladder is used as a pillow. The Bladder also can be filled with air to adjust buoyancy for the pack during river crossings and canoe / kayak trips.. The water bottle is clear and can be used for SODIS.
Also the GSI bottle cup is great. I added 2 small holes and a short piece of guitar string to make a bail handle cooking over flames. Now it's awesome.
The bottle, cup, CRKT Eat'n tool and fire making gear fit into a MOLLE GP Pouch

I like stainless steel bottles myself. They're sturdy, leak-proof (or at least resistant) and you can boil in 'em. The known capacity is good for chemical water sanitization, too. They may be a little heavy but for me the durability makes up for it.

I use a stainless water bottle, a 2 quart canteen, or a camleback. Kinda depends upon what I am doing. I like the camelback because I find I stay hydrated better as I can drink while walking, but I do keep a 2 quart canteen on hand for refills, or when it is just to hot to have a pack on my back. I do a lot of still hunting, and the camelback works well for me when sitting. I don't have to move much to get a drink. Also works great to help prevent sloshing.
I use the stainless waterbottle at work and in my walk about bag, as it is easy to fill and keep clean.
I would not feel hampered by a Nalgene, they are well built. I am just used to what I use.

Just got back from a 4-day hiking trip into the Wind River Range of Wyoming. I must say that without the bladders we would have been in trouble. They made drinking regularly so much easier which made staying hydrated a non-issue. I did still pack a nalgene bottle for backup as bladders can and do rupture and/or get punctured and if that happens and you don't have a backup plan, you're screwed. The nalgene was also easier to use with one of the water filters we had on hand; filled it up and then poured the water into the bladders.

I have a bladder, and canteens as well. The bladder is reserved for liquid, but it's not for liquid that u drink :)
