I thought I would show you guys what I've been workin on for the past couple of days. I've not had much time to work on it, and it's not as very impressive, but heres my "base camp" to test my kit.
Heres my lean-to shelter I spent about an hour and a half on and today I spent about another thirty minutes putting the tarp on it.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-H6QMRIcbP-Y/Th_Az9l7BEI/AAAAAAAAAFc/LEhBxzWHVSw/s288/P7140457.JPG
Heres my handsome little fire pit, I dug a hole with a stick and the rocks propably weren't needed but the gave it a nice homey touch :)
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-PGnUAERUadI/Th_B05CpDRI/AAAAAAAAAFs/3TwAS91oJtY/s288/P7140460.JPG
The is the creek about thirty yards from my camp, its not deep enough for any sizable fish but I have seen several bull frogs along it's bank.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-xJnppZK2Q7I/Th_B7Rl8l1I/AAAAAAAAAFw/dca5nXwMsBg/s288/P7140461.JPG
Where all the top soil has been washed away the creek banks are almost pure clay. I've seen some videos on bush craft on fire about making clay pots, so I am planning on trying that in the future.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-s9YMEuFDW-g/Th_FPpKaEEI/AAAAAAAAAF8/L-4mrN-6kBY/s288/P7140462.JPG
All I have left is to wall in the sides and build my raised bed. I probably would of had it done today, but I opted to spend the evening fishing instead.
Anybody have any sugestions on improvements I could make to my camp?

Awesome! That is about all the water I have at the place I go. I've been thinking about doing the same thing but the only locations that would be nice for a base camp are right in the middle of the best deer hunting.
Anyway, thanks for the visual.

what are you doing for food ?
did you bring some in with you or wild edibles ?

You will not have a single square inch of dry ground inside that lean too after the first good rain.
Try it this way. I have weathered many wet weekends in a plow point set up.

I'll have to try that. This will probably serve my purpose though for a summer camp. The prevaling wind is at my back and 90% of the time it's the direction the storms come from. This fall I plan on making it a debri shelter and I will use the tarp for an awning. plus their is a lot of canopy above me.

Anyone can camp in good weather Sparky. When the weather is perfect you make no mistakes, pay no consciquenses and miss out on what it really takes to keep from being miserable.
That same tarp can go from marginal to being a cozy shelter in 10 minutes.
In my area the storms always come from the northwest, except for the ones that sneek in from the south, and the wrap around systems that come in from the northeast.

I got the raised bed finished today, The camera didn't have any battery so I'll post pics tomorrow.
Sparky, I think you've got the right idea. You are out there doing it, learning and finding out what works (and doesn't work) for you. You might toss a piece of notepaper and a pencil in your pack and if you find you need something you don't have just jot it down. Then pay attention to what you did to compensate for not having it. Or if there was no work around. Then ask yourself if you really need it. You may or may not. It just depends on your preferences.
I'll bet you have minnows in that stream. Probably in the deeper pools. There have been good posts on minnow and crawdad traps so if that interests you there is something to work on.
Keep posting the updates. You're doing great.

I think you are off to a good start, Rick is right, if your doing, you are learning.
I agree with KRS though, your shelter is a good reflector, but a plow point with serve you better in the rain and snow, only takes once....
How are the bugs where you are?
Sparky93

Rick - Thanks for the advice, I am definetly interested in the crawdad traps and yes there are small minnows in the creek. The creek is fed by are lake and runs into another larger creek that feeds into the patoka river. I have permission to go to the larger creek where there larger fish (grass carp, small bass, bluegill, yellow belly catfish) or I can go fish in our lake.
Hunter63 - The bugs are horrible but if I keep my fire going and throw a little green stuff on it it helps a lot.
I added to my kit list today sleeping pad, my raised bed is bearable but I feel after a night on I might wake stiff as a log.

Okay, just got through read'n the thread on crawdad trapin and now I got one more thing to try. Theres a slew on my property thats filled with crawdads, I meen thousands of the little boogers. I was frog gig'n there and if you shine the light in the water all you see is craw dads. Now my question, do you clean them somehow befor cookin and whats the best way to cook them?
Here's some information on cleaning crawdad. In addition to what this site says you can purge them. That's just putting them in clean fresh water and changing it about every 15 minutes until it remains clean. It will get sort of murky looking if they are still purging. That's something you can do at home. If you purge them you shouldn't have to devein them. Some folks purge them using salt water. Their reasoning is the salt makes them regurgitate and helps to clean them. I've never watched a crawdad to see if it throws up so I can't tell you if it works or not.

As to the bad bugs if you have any pine trees in your woods just toss a pine cone in the fire. The smoke will keep the skeets and flies at bay until the pine cone burns up. I don't know if the turpines in the pine cone irritates them in some way but they will stay away.

One of the things that I found with pine cones that seemed to work for me. If they are pretty dried up I soak them in water and then set them at the edge of the fire so that they first steam, and then smolder. They seem to produce quite a bit of smoke this way. Not sure if it works better or not, but it seems to work.

We used to catch them on a piece of hot dog on a string.....I sure any piece of meat would work...........
Yeah, yeah, I know why didn't we just eat the hot dog?....LOL......Because that's no FUN, that's why.
We just boiled them them till red....Didn't have any spice, but hey, we were "camping out", we didn't know about surviving back then.

Sparky you're doing just fine; you got your "boots in the field" that's for sure! Rick gave you some really good advice, especially with that pine cone trick; that's a new on me, learn something new every day! He also gave you good advice on a notebook and pen/pencil. Keep a journal, write your own book on the outdoors! Someday you'll look back and, hopefully, have fond memories of the time spent learning. BTW, Blue Gill is better than Crawdads any day of the week. As for the frogs, try using a fishing pole with a leaf or a dry fly hanging from it to lure them right up to you. Good luck and enjoy!

Oh! If you ever are invited to a good ole southern crawfish boil GO. We have one every May that's the season here. We have a stock trough[for watering cattle ect.] filled up with about 200-300# of live crawfish, round here they're called mud bugs. Huge kettle over burners filled with crawfish boil seasoning, corn and potatoes. when that boils big time we take out huge fishnets and scoop them out the trough and in the boil. They are wonderful, takes a bunch to make a meal but they're great. We also have the smokers going with BBQ, burgers, sausage, hot dogs, brats and this year got a gator tail to deep fry. It's Big Time to say the least. It all takes place in a back country pasture with 200 or so showing up, live band, huge bon fire[about 2 stories high] and yes most of the party takes place at night. Many come in tents and campers and spend the night for obvious reasons because it will go on till dawn. Alot will bring boats and run trotlines all night long too. One of the tings about eating mud bugs is just tear off the tail and open that like a baby lobster and thats it for the meat, then you turn it around and suck the juice and flavor out of the head and you've got it. Just remember you eat the tail and suck the head and you've got your self a good time. I'm sure some of my neighbors to the south can add a little on how they do it but this is the way it goes here.

I normally trench around my shelter to help drain water away if it rains. I checked the photo twice and didn't notice any trenching. It don't take much to redirect the runoff. Most of my camping has been in the dersert areas then the lean to is important because of the need for shade. If is in the "monsoon" period I try to camp on top of the highest hill in the area.

Thats not a bad idea. I might run a little trench on the uphill side of the shelter to keep water from running in.

See, I am of the school that you keep the taters and corn out of the pot. I don't like the same seasoning on them as the crawdads. Also, we suck the heads and then eat the tail meat.
Watching these gator hunters with all there experience in gator. Why are they feeding there people gator scraps. There is a back strap in the tail that is good, a tenderloin inside the hips and the jowls are also choice. The tail meat they show these swamp rats feeding their friends makes me say WTF! The fat on a gator is skunky! Most of the tail meat is too much work to get the fat off so you give that crap away.
But, what do I know about alligators. LOL SHOOT EM ELIZIBETH!!! YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!! LMAO...

I was doin good, other than the skeeters and the heat, but when the coyotes started get'n closer and then what could only be a chupacabra let out the kind of blood curdling scream that makes your heart sink to your stomache and your hair stand on end. The sound was ethier a bobcat, fox or two coyotes fight'n. It freaked me out what ever it was and I buged out of their. It was to hot anyway, I was try'n to keep the skeeters of me with the sleep'n bag and in so doin drenched myself in sweat to the point where you could wring it out of my shirt. I probably would have made it through the night if I would of had one of three things: a gun if just for the sence of security, a tent because I didn't feel very safe in my shelter, somebody else with me. Had I been in a survival situation where a nice cozy bed was a ten minute hike away I think I would of made it okay. But I ot to of with all the gear I had, My bed was more comfortable then I thought it was goin to be and my supper of ramen noodles and tea was superb. It is not uncommon for "new campers" to feel very uncomfortable at night when they first start out. It's all new - the sights (or lack of), the sounds, the smell, not having walls around you. A mosquito net is a necessity around here. You may be able to find some fairly cheap at a military type surplus store.
Although you didn't last the night, thumbs up for trying. Keep at it. Don't look at it like "beating" nature, but rather understanding her. It's a wonderful ride once you can enjoy the new surroundings.

Sparky-You get a Gold star for the effort. Awhile back I had a similar experience. I was taking a float trip solo through White River Natl Refugee,165'000 acres of virgin botttomland hardwoods, Gators Bears the whole deal out there, completely primitive area. The first night out I made camp set my tent got my flint and steel fire going no problem. Sitting there about half hour after night fall this unbelievable scream rang out just to the edge of my camp right behind my tent, I bout fell in the fire! This screaming went on for many seconds and then deathly silence, now I know where that saying comes from. After I got my heart rate back to normal I just kind of smiled realizing that this is how it is in their world and something just got their supper I,m guessing coyote got rabbit, but don't know for sure. Just then I remembered that "I" needed supper and grabbed my first mre of the trip and had a wonderful night, granted it wasn't steaming hot though. That is miseable camping weather.

You definitely hear some blood curdling shtuff at night in the woods around here. I can't say I'll ever get 100% used to it, even knowing that there really aren't any real threats in the woods i hunt and such. I've had nights where I was certain bigfoot or a panther was stalking me, the panther is an extremely remote possiblity, but very unlikely. I'd be less surprised to see bigfoot. LOL!
Sounds like a good time out Sparky.

That was probably Rick you heard screaming...somebody probably ran off with his Twinkies. Anyway, going solo the 1st time out is tough, and I applaud your candor in relating it to the group. Did you try Rick's suggestion about burning pine cones in the fire to keep the mosquitoes at bay? Also, the inside of fresh Orange peel rubbed on the skin works as a natural mosquito repellent. Now that you went through it just think, what if it had been for real and you COULDN'T have just got up & left? Did you keep a journal? Write down what you learned. :cool2:

I related this in another thread, but a tiny little fox makes one blood curdling scream. Now you just need to get your dad back.
By the way, try bringing a dog next time. Borrow your friends if you don't have one. Mine is my warning system. If there is some crazy noise and she isn't barking, then it is something small and harmless. If she is barking, then she sees something big.

Nothing worse than a neurotic dog.
Yeah, don't let it bother you. I think Hunter is right. It's part of our genetic makeup to alert to strange sounds day or night. If you think about how much sensory input we receive every single second of every day we'd go crazy if we tried to process all of it. Most of it we ignore and only concentrate on the stuff that's important to us at the moment and that which appears to be a threat. In the case of noises at night I've found that the noise is not only a perceived threat but pretty danged important at the moment. That's why I sit up and prop toothpicks under my eyelids to keep from falling asleep. That fact that it was only a field mouse thrashing around in the underbrush like a 10 foot grizzly doesn't really matter. That's probably one reason we aren't allowed to carry hand grenades. I've have used more than a few by now.
