I think I will buy a SPOT locater thingie. Are there different models......? Is there a cheaper place to buy one than Walmart.......? I think they are about $149.00 plus annual fee. Anyone own one or use one.......???

Might be handy for some, 'specially the "I'm OK' signal. Other than that, usually if I'm out in the woods I can only get intermittent GPS when I'm in an opening, if I fall and get a booboo, the SPOT probably won't help. If my wife finds out about these I'll probably have one so I can check in every half hour or she'll send the Marines. So far, she accepts the fact that there ain't no cell service where I go. She don't like it, tho'.

Suggest calling Eagle Enterprises in Anchorage 800-478-2331 regarding the Sport vs. Terrafix PLB before buying.

WOW......They called the SPOT thing a "Novelty" and said it worked in about 17% of Alaska Locations. They said all of the SPOT satellites are on the equator, and reception sucks in Alaska.

SPOT works in most places up here, but it does have a drawback that it works on the Globalstar network of satellites which orbit lower and therefore in high Arctic locations or in valleys where a clear view of the southern horizon doesn't exist, you may have issues.

I bought a McMurdo FastFind PLB which operates on the SARSAT system - those satellites orbit higher. The price was the best I could find at the time- I think I paid about $250. ACR would operate on the SARSAT system as well.

SPOT allows for you to send a personal "I'm okay" message via email to someone back home, an "I need help" button that goes to someone back home, and a 911 that goes to emergency personnel. It also allows you to track your progress and for other people to login and see your progress online. The old SPOT took standard AA batteries, the new one takes AAA batteries, and you can change them in the field. Some people like all those features. However, you pay $150 for the SPOT and then $100 a year after that in subscription fees for all that.

A PLB you buy outright and never have subscription fees and they do just one thing- call for rescue. For me, that was all I wanted, so I went with that. You do have to register them (you can do it online or via mail) and you have to send them back once every 5 years (I think) to have their battery replaced.

I'm sure the people up in Alaska know best about the coverage - IMO unless you have friends and family tracking your progress and you "checking in" with them, a PLB would be your best option.

I hadn't even considered the orbit of the sats. It sure makes sense to me. I'd go with the advice from the locals that deal with it all the time. I went out and looked at Eagle Enterprise earlier today and it looks like they have the survival spectrum covered. Good suggestion from SJJ.

Huge mountaineering groups here. Mostly oriented on McKinley but they are all over the state. Met with some to discuss wilderness issues. They rely on "hoping" and moderate gear.

I thought I would add that when I used one the email updates worked perfectly but the publicly viewable update tracker with the map did not work at all.

You're supposed to be able to give people you would like to see your progress the URL for the map so they can see where you are every time you update it. Instead it just showed the location where we first turned it on. It was a little disappointing.

Being able to send everybody an email with the 'OK' message after every excursion was very nice though. It worked appreciably in deep canyons, though I can understand the low signal angle up north being problematic.

I've had my SPOT for a few years now and would never go into the bush without it now. I love it. It not only works as a EPIRB but it gives myself and my family peace of mind that I can get help if I need it, and I can send them a message that I'm ok every few days - and they can see where I am on Google maps.
I have had a couple of days where it took an hour or so to get a satellite connection but I am generally exctatically happy with it. I have the old model, I'm not sure how much better the newer one is.

Rick, my understanding (or misunderstanding) is that they don't work without clear line-of-sight, like a GPS. Frequently I'm under a heavy canopy of trees, if I want to use my GPS I need to find an opening. My luck I'd break a leg in thick cover.

Thanks - I've had the same problem with my GPS. You ask, you learn. I made a decision some time back that it would be to my benefit to only be injured on flat, wide ridges free of cover and near a cell tower. Preferably with a street name sign nearby. I haven't been killed in a deep valley yet so it appears to be working out.

the signal is very weak, so any significant obstruction will of course block it, but light cover is not a great impediment to radio transmission.

the unit broadcasts packet bursts and resends them at regular intervals until they are received (or the try count is reached), so if you are moving, the odds are of course better that one burst will succeed.

i know; it sucks when a relatively inexpensive hand held device powered by small battery that can talk to the internet via satellites in space can't do everything, but it is an edge.

The good news on the weak signal is there are well more than just one satellite tracking (I know some of you know this but the sake of others that might not). There are actually 32 tracking satellites with a minimum of 24 operational at all items. Any one satellite can be taken offline for programming or repositioning but at least 24 of the 32 are maintained in working status. That's necessary because of their orbit. Your GPS can not "see" all 24 at the same time.

You might also find it interesting that GPS satellites "drift" from their orbit because of the earth's gravity or other influences so once a year each sat has to be repositioned to maintain its orbit. This maneuver is referred to as a Delta-V (don't ask I don't know) and takes about 12 hours to perform. Obviously, the sat is not usable while this maneuvering is taking place. Also, twice per year each sat has to have its beam tube pumped. I don't know about you but that sounds painful to me and I don't even know what it does. In any case, it takes about 18 hours of down time to do that. It would probably take me a lot longer to recover.

There are currently five generations of GPS sats in the air that date back to 1989. The newest ones, designated Block IIF began being launched in May of last year (2010). There are 11 more block IIF and 30 block III sats on the schedule to be launched. I suppose funding, etc. will dictate the schedule. Of the 50 GPS sats that have been launched (or attempted) 17 have been decommissioned (all class II and some class IIa) with one being lost (a IIr version) in an unsuccessful launch in '97. That gives us the total 32. 50-18=32.

The new IIF block adds a new signal used specifically for SAR and aviation.

I don't pretend to understand anything about the frequencies they use and only slightly more about the triangulation methods they employ. That's all out of my ballpark.

Just remember that it does not float. It's water resistant but not buoyant. They make a buoyancy pack that's pretty cheap. You can get it at the same place you are buying the unit.

delta v refers to the change in velocity (and it's cumulative deviation from a stable orbit) over time. the term delta (Δ, the difference operator) is frequently used in mathematical systems to indicate change in a unit relative to another term. I think it is derrived from the way in which they model the exact correction needed.

I have used two different spot models for a few/couple of years. I have had them show my wife exactly when I was in a galvanized roof deer blind under a large oak tree at 5 AM, and what room of a 75 year old house I was in but then not work at all when I was walking in an open field for a couple miles under moderate clouds. I always carry it when out in the field but I don't trust it completely. Our joke is that it will probably make it easier to fine the body (what is left after the pigs eat me) and collect the insurance money.

In the end the INTERNET seller never called back, so I am on the top of the list to get the new compact model ACR that is being released this week. It is more money, but it is more goooooder. I am buying it local from "Eagle Enterprises" in Los Anchorage, Alaska.

I'm always amazed at how many retailers (Internet and brick & mortar) provide bad service, or no service by not returning calls or answering e-mails. They are probably the ones that are quick to complain about the economy being down and cite their poor sales as proof, when they should be looking in the mirror. END RANT
