Hot Weather

I don't know what the weather is like where you are but it was 99°F today with 70% humidity. That means you can't breath outside. I know a lot of the nation's midsection and southern Midwest is experiencing similar temperatures and humidity so I thought I'd post some reminders on heat related illness. These come from the Center for Disease Control:


The best defense is prevention. Here are some prevention tips:



Drink more fluids (nonalcoholic), regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Warning: If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask him how much you should drink while the weather is hot.
Don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar–these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.
Stay indoors and, if at all possible, stay in an air-conditioned place. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library–even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat. Call your local health department to see if there are any heat-relief shelters in your area.
Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool shower or bath, or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to cool off.
Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
NEVER leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle.
Although any one at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others. Check regularly on:

Infants and young children
People aged 65 or older
People who have a mental illness
Those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure


Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Infants and young children, of course, need much more frequent watching.

If you must be out in the heat:



Limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.
Cut down on exercise. If you must exercise, drink two to four glasses of cool, nonalcoholic fluids each hour. A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. Warning: If you are on a low-salt diet, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage. Remember the warning in the first “tip” (above), too.
Try to rest often in shady areas.
Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat (also keeps you cooler) and sunglasses and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher (the most effective products say “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” on their labels).

I actually have no pain. I'm inside in the air conditioning. There was a time many moons ago...I just want those of you that do have to be outside or have to drive with no air conditioning to take some extra precautions and stay safe. And check on a relative or neighbor whether they have air conditioning or not. Ten minutes of your time just might save their life. This heat could be a SHTF situation if you are not prepared.

Rain has been scarce here! The well is really getting a workout with the garden and the horses. I noticed the old guy up the road putting in a deep well today. I didn't get a warm and fuzzy seeing that, rarely seen down here. He has just a few more livestock than I do.

I honestly prefer cold to hot. I can keep adding layers to stay warm, but, once i'm down to my shorts and no shrt and I'm still hot. Well, you're just too hot.

The temp is right around 84F with 88% humidity and it 3:00am, the only reason I'm still awake is the fact that I am trip'n on cold medicine try'n to fight off whatever illness has forsaken me.

Sounds like just another day at the office for me..
Caffeine, like alcohol, replaces water in the body, so it's a good idea to cut back on coffee and sodas too.
5 a.m. and heading to work in a bit. I'm sure we'll knock off around 12 and go back around 4:30. You just can't be up on a housetop that time of day. The sun beats down and I don't care what you have on, it gets HOT.
If temps get below 80 I start looking for warm clothes to put on. I saw on the weather channel, they were talking about a marathon, with temps around 84 and people passing out and going to the hospital.. This is not even concievable to me. 84 degrees is heaven.

YCC - This is for you. One of my neighbors replaced his roof last Thursday. The crew arrived at 9:00 and by 12:00 the two story, three level roof was stripped and half the 2nd story replaced. By 5:00 the house was done except the clean up. Those pneumatic nailers banged away all day. Every time one went off I saw you cringe. Six guys knocked that house out in one day and it was hot then, too. I'm not certain how they walked on the shingles without damaging them. Quick doesn't necessarily mean good. My other neighbor had his done and it took them three days to finish it. They quit in the middle of the day like you. He was crabbing how long it was taking his guys to finish his house. I told him the same thing. Quick doesn't necessarily mean good.

I do feel for anyone that HAS to go out and work in this weather, did it for a lot of years........Roof-top units on a tarred roofs.

Been hot on and off for the last week or so, out here at "The Place"......and Guess what, no air!
DW was grousing about the heat....asked her if she wanted to head back to the city.......she said no.

So we are back to the multi fans, opening windows on the shady side and keeping a low activity level until late afternoon.
Had the same storm go thru nite before last, lowered the humidity a tad, so not so bad last nite.
We didn't have a spring, went from 40-50's rainy to 90+ and no rain first park of June.

Oh yeah, the skeeters and gnats have been just terrible, and have been using up all the accumulated bug candles, coils, sprays, and mechanical anti bug machines.....
Need to go down and mow along the river bank, but the only thing worst then hot, humid, is sweat on skeeter bites, so have been holding off.

Nothing beats a screen house to keep the biting critters away,hunter.
Just the other night my wife and I were enjoying a fire while sitting in the screen house,with a fan blowing on our backs.lol
Not to worry the fire was at least 8 ft. away.But I also light up the Tiki torches the keep them at bay when opening and closing the door.

We picked up a couple of those Off little blower units, runs on batteries, and have been carrying it around in my shirt pocket.......helps some, but they swam around you and you better keep your mouth closed, them buggies taste terrible....LOL

Got two trees trimmed up, toted the brush down to the pile on one, than took a break.
So long sleeve shirt, hat, leather gloves, long socks, boots......all sprayed down, little "blow job" in my pocket...and carrying head net,...just in case,...I'm fixin' on heading back out here directly.
Oh yeah, everything all wet already.....

If it's not skeeters it's ticks, if you walk through the woods or tall grass without completely soaking yourself with permectrin (deet dosen't even slow the little boogers down) your liable to come back with over 50 ticks stuck to your legs. And don't even get me started on turkey ticks, so small you need a maginfying glass to see them.

Got off about dinnertime on Thursday, and about an hour later it started raining. Went to bed with it raining, got up Friday and it was still raining. Broke for a few hours and it set back in before mid-day. Went to bed Friday with it still raining, woke up saturday with it still raining, it rained all day yesterday, and all night last night, still raining outside now. Last I checked we were at 3" of nice soaking drizzle.
It got down to 74 here yesterday. I was cold.

We've spent that last two days watching 8 year old girl softball tournaments. The heat was bad yesterday but it was brutal today. Water was an essential item. Really felt sorry for the girls playing in the heat.

If I remember right, the weatherman said lastnight that we have been in triple digits 21 days already as of yesterday. YCC, I sure wish some of that rain would come through east Texas. We been getting a shower now and then but nothing like what we need. The county I live in has been under a burn ban pretty much since the first of June with no end in the near future. At the rate we're drying up I'll be hunting catfish with a dipnet soon instead of fishing with a hook and line.

When the tournaments finished this afternoon and we got in the car it was like getting in an oven, of course. On with the AC and we just sat there soaking up the cool air. It reminded me of the first car air conditioner I ever saw. It was a huge clunker that hung under the dash and was as temperamental as it was big. But when it worked it worked really well. I thought I'd post this just to bring back some old memories.

I must concur with the folks from AK. For me, anything over 60F is too hot, and that's if I'm sitting still. If I have to actually move, it had better be closer to 50. I've never managed to acclimate to the heat & humidity of the east coast. It took the temperatures of Twentynine Palms to make me actually sweat, the only other times being when I was pregnant. Since sweating is the usual cooling method, I'm sunk here in the east. Drinking water doesn't help me at all; I'd literally die of water poisoning before I felt like I'd consumed enough to get cool. Yes, I was born this way, and yes, most folks around here cannot understand why I love being outside in the middle of winter.

One of my friends is that way (insert your "you have friends joke" here), we'll be outside work'n, 90 degrees out, I'll be drinched in sweat and he won't have a bead of sweat on him. Then the guy we work for, I've never seen a man sweat so much. He will litterely have sweat poring off of him, there will be a puddle below where he is work'n. I'm head go-phor, my friend is head everything else, and our boss is head air conditioned cab operator.

I was that way most of my life. Not really a good thing. You can overheat much too quickly. Not sweating brings it's own problems. And I have always been comfortable with no coat in winter unless it was bitter cold. Last few years not so much.
