View Full Version : .22 revolver carry method and ammo question...

As you know I am gearing up for a gator hunt. Remember in SC the animal must be secured alongside the boat before it is dispatched. So I'll be managing a rope and trying to get to my
.22 to dispatch the animal. I may have help, I may not as the season is only a month long and I'll have to go at every opportunity if I plan to get the animal I am after. Let's assume I have no help. I just purchased the crossman holster and tried it on my right side belt (right handed right eye dominant). It seems like it'll get in the way of the rope action a little. What other methods could I consider. I'll admit I don't know alot about the options.

The question is 2 fold. I would also like recommendations on ammo. .22 Long Rifle. The thing is the shot is almost point blank and needs to sever the spine. Never had a need to do that. Consider the potential of a ricochet with your response please..

I've been watching Swamp People on the History Channel so I'm pretty close to an expert on the subject by now. Is that what you are going to do? A couple of those guys carry pistols. Most carry a rifle.

We can't use baited hooks. We can snag or rip hook them with a handline or fishing pole, harpoon them, shot'em with a bow fishing rig. Once secured 2 methods of dispatch are allowed a pistol or a bangstick. No rifles.

Thanks, I hadn't consider that one. I have considered the drop thigh rig. Iam also considering the left side or cross draw. Whatever I go with will be determined by practice. I have until September if selected.

Realize I'm dumber than a box of lemon drops on this subject but with all the action that will be going on and all the adrenaline that will be running when you get that gator to the boat I'd think an AD anywhere near the chest or opposite arm could be a really, really bad thing. Even more so if you are alone. We all do dumb things from time to time, well, not me of course but some, so I'd want that firearm away from vital stuff. A round through the bottom of the boat would be bad. A round through your left bicep could be really bad.

As an avid watcher of Swamp People myself, I to, have become an expert, in Gator hunting.......LOL

Seem that they do use mostly a .22 mag judging by what was said, and complaints about bringing the "wrong gun", not enough power etc.
The way it was portrayed, it was like old guns aren't as powerful as new guns> Narrated by the guy from Criminal Minds.

The air boat guy uses a .17 HMR, and has brought it up several times.

Seems that for open water I saw a Mini 14, and several other larger rifles pictured from time to time.

I do notice from time to time, from shot to shot, the gun changes or the footage is flipped, and the guy goes from right handed to left handed rifles, or bolt gun to pump action.......So I'm sure a lot of editing is happening.

I like a cross draw myself only because it out of my way, as I am right handed......But that is just me.

I am with you Batch and I hoped you'd weigh in. I have had a little experience from FL. One 9 footer at a golf coarse on Merritt Island and another 9 footer at Okechobee. Been 20 yrs though! I just did a little practicing with the boat on the trailer and the results are very promising. First I fired 6 shots rapid fire at a milkjug filled with water from right side belt carry, then I fired 6 shots rapid fire crossdraw at an oak board laid beside the boat. Crossdraw is the method of carry for sure. I am very pleased with the results. My gun is just a tad low but very repeatable. All six were in less than a 1" group, I shouldn't hit the skull on accident period. I was using Winchester Xpert .22 Long rifle hollow points 36 grain.

I have no experience with gator hunting, but I do know they have a brain the size of a Zippo lighter and the spinal cord is about the same width.

I would think this might be a good time to break out the .22 mag cylinder for the cowboy pistol, and I think I would want a carry rig I could reach with either hand.

From what I can tell on Swamp People the best way to kill a gator is to choke them to death by shoving your leg down their throat. Then you shoot them from the inside after they swallow you.

No chance of using a Mag cylinder. I will be planning to sever the spine with my bow. The .22 Long rifle will be a "if I have to" Kyrat, I could use your experience, what is available in Long Rifle that will penetrate the mostest!

Have not been myself but have seriously thought about applying for a permit, have a friend that got a 14 footer last year. Anyway here the regs say you can have up to three helpers in the boat, the gator has to be snared or harpooned and must be at least 4 feet, the only legal weapons are a blast stick or a shotgun with nothing larger than #4 shot. My friend used a bang stick,check your regs, I would rather have a bang stick than a 22 with it being dang near in my boat already! Oh and I almost forgot, we can only hunt a night.

I'm thinkin cci mini mags but I can't remember if they're solids. The crossdraw is what popped into my head right away, i've never used a crossdraw rig but have been seriously considering it for some time for general purpose carry.

In a .22 pistol, I'd go with magnum ammo due to velocity loss from a shortened barrel. If you were using a rifle length barrel, .22 LR would suffice. I'd also go with NON hollow point ammo. Forget the hollow points. Gators have a tough hide/skull and penetration is the key. My first carry method would be strong side but if you think it will get in the way there, cross draw would be handy. Then again, all things being equal, you sure couldn"t go wrong with a .357 mag with soft point (not hollowpoint) ammo especially if you are handling them by yourself. You'll have alot more room for error on a quick shot on a non cooperative gator. YMMV.

Cowboy, I thought you specifically said only .22 caliber and bang sticks. Where did the bow come from?

You are going to take on a cross between a pit bull/grizzly/T-rex with himroids using a bow?

I thought you loved that little girl! What is she going to do without a Daddy?

I hope you are just planning on snagging him with that.

My next suggestion is if you do not have a mag cylinder then BORROW ONE!

If .22lr is mandatory then I would use mini-mag solids. Stay away from the hyper velocity stuff with light bullets. You probably already know that.

The 12 ga bangstick is looking better and better.

Penetration on water jugs and smashing against an gator skull, covered by gator hide and gator gristle are completely different sets of requirements.

I think I would be looking at testing for penetration and weight retention against concrete blocks!

Mayhap you can call one of the "swamp people" and ask what they use. Probably bulk pack from Walmart!

The lanyard is a good idea too. Just imagine having that critter on the end of a line and hearing a distinct "plunk" as your pistol hits the water.

I won't be wanting to hit the skull. I want to sever the spine. I will be testing penetration at close range in hardwood (oak) and softwood (poplar).

A gators ears start just behind their eyes and are called horns in crocodiles. there is a structure between the ears which houses the brain. You put the weapon between the ears and aim just below the front of the lower jaw.

I don't care how you kill the gator. Tape his mouth and tie his legs. I have seen dead gators leave the scene. I have heard or "dead" gators biting people. My dad shot a 12' with a .50 cal Hawkins in the head and it walked away.

My son killed the gator he is shown sitting on with a Hilti nail gun from Home Depot.

We have killed gators a lot of different ways. When we shoot them we fire into the brain cavity and then use a metal rod through the bullet hole to "scramble his eggs" or to pith and destroy his brain.

I looked at bang sticks. The powerhead can be had for about $100 but then I get confused with registration laws here. MY SCDNR info says the bangstick is a firearm and must be registered ummmm....none of my other firearms are registered??? I get lost at hat point!

I set up my .22 penetration test beside the boat tonight. 4 boards of treated pine fence scrap at actually a couple of feet away from where I expect to get my shot at my dinosaur. Itested 3 .22 LR bullets I had on hand.

I bought my bang stick and harpoon rig at a gator hunting orientation meeting. It was $100 for the bang stick and $100 for the harpoon with 2 tips, rope and floats. My buddy paid $500 for a harpoon bangstick combo.

I can't shoot the gator with a handgun. We tend to "fish" and catch gators and then kill them. Once they are caught and taped up how you kill them isn't important.

If you do shoot and kill a gator it'll one hand up for a little while. You gotta be quick. But, if you truly kill it it will wave for a small period of time. It'll sink and can be retrieved with a gaff if you mark its spot. It'll be just back from where you thought he sunk.
