Hey folks! I am getting desperate for a new pack and have only a base idea of where to begin. Here is what I have come up with so far.

1. What is the gender, height and build of the person who will be using this pack?

A: Male, 5'10, 180 Pounds and semi-athletic.

2. How much do you expect this pack to weigh empty?

A: Not sure but as little as possible.

3. Will this pack be carried or worn as a backpack?

A: Backpack

4. What do you intend to carry in this pack?

A: First aid kit, flashlight, fire supplies, knife, multi-tool, possibly a small axe, small cooking kit, sewing kit, small crank weather radio, something to alert of an emergency. I would like room for basic food goods, water bottles, basic sanitary supplies but none of that is absolutely necessary.

5. What is its intended use? BOB, Backpacking, Backcountry Ski Trips, Mountaineering?

A: BOB, backpacking, hiking and everyday.

6. Do you prefer a MOLLE or ALICE type pack? Do you know what they are?

A: No idea, sorry.

7. Where, in terms of terrain, do you intend to use this pack?

A: Mainly urban though I do intend to go hiking and camping ( I live in Chattanooga, TN ).

8. How long do you expect to carry or wear this pack each day?

A: It will be within my reach at all times with a moderate amount of wearing.

9. Do you want a frame pack or a frameless pack? Internal frame or external frame?

A: I am new to this, so forgive me...what are the pros of cons of the aforementioned types?

10. Are you looking for a pack made of a specific type of material?

A: Something durable but not too expensive.

11. Do you know your volume requirement in cubic inches and/or liters?

A: Unfortunately, no...I currently use a school backpack and I need more storage than that.

12. Do you require hydration compatibility?

A: Nope.

13. Do you require water bottle pockets?

A: Yes.

14. Do you want a waist belt and/or sternum strap?

A: What are the pros and cons?

15. Do you want a torso adjustment?

A: What are the pros and cons?

16. Do you prefer top-access, rear-access, or bottom access?

A: Top or rear, either.

17. Do you require multiple pockets? What kind? How many?

A: Yes, preferably zip but Velcro is ok, not sure.

18. Should your pack have a detachable day-pack or fanny pack built in?

A: Not necessary.

19. Do you need a sleeping bag compartment?

A: Nope.

20. Do you need a tent compartment?

A: Nope.

21. Do you need a rain cover? Attached or removable?

A: Nope.

22. Do you need a shovel pocket?

A: Yes.

23. Will you be carrying a snowboard?

A: Nope.

24. Will you be carrying skis?

A: Nope.

25. Do you require gear loops?

A: Yes.

26. Do you require ice axe loops?

A: Nope.

27. Do you require a built-in Avalung?

A: What is that?

28. How much are you prepared to spend?

A: As much as I have to but, like most, money is tight so the cheaper the better.

A: No idea, sorry.

Both are military versions of backpacks. Both are acronyms. MOLLE stands for Modular Lightweight Load carrying Equipment and is the current version. Alice stands for All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment.

14. Do you want a waist belt and/or sternum strap?

A: What are the pros and cons?

The waist belt is designed to transfer the weight of the pack to your hips rather than your shoulders. This can be a huge help if you have a lot of weight or plan to carry your pack long distances or both. The sternum strap allows you to pull the shoulder straps in toward the center of the chest. This keeps the straps off the outside of your shoulders (some body types have a problem with that) and helps the shoulder straps to lay flat on the chest.

15. Do you want a torso adjustment?

A: What are the pros and cons?

The torso adjustment allows you to fit the pack to your frame more closely. The more a pack fits your body the more comfortable it is to carry especially over distance and with weight. Remember that men and women have different frame shapes so a torso adjustment can be really helpful. If you are tall it's really helpful, too.

27. Do you require a built-in Avalung?

A: What is that?

It's a device used in avalanche terrain. It consists of a mouth piece, a flap valve, an exhaust pipe, and an air collector that lets you breath while under snow.

Rather than suggest one I'm going to give you a link to a current article in Backpacker Magazine. Then you can go to your local sports store and try some on and ask some questions. See if the store rents packs. Some do and it's a good way to find out if a particular pack is right for you.

A: As much as I have to but, like most, money is tight so the cheaper the better. I think that this question should be asked 1st as it gives everybody a better idea about what they might offer up. Packs range in price from the super-cheap, to the super expensive, and you get what you pay for. So...what? $50; up to a hundred dollars? up to $200?

2. How much do you expect this pack to weigh empty?

A: Not sure but as little as possible. a good, sturdy pack can wiegh from just a couple pounds to 10 pounds of more. So let's look at up to 5 pounds, fair enough?

3. Will this pack be carried or worn as a backpack?

A: Backpack

4. What do you intend to carry in this pack?

System? just day-trips? What?

A: No idea, sorry. Both are packs desinged for the military, but there are many civilian models to choose from.

7. Where, in terms of terrain, do you intend to use this pack?

A: Mainly urban though I do intend to go hiking and camping ( I live in Chattanooga, TN ). A small pack would be ideal to get around town, a much larger one for extended trips into the Wilderness.

8. How long do you expect to carry or wear this pack each day?

A: It will be within my reach at all times with a moderate amount of wearing.

9. Do you want a frame pack or a frameless pack? Internal frame or external frame?

A: I am new to this, so forgive me...what are the pros of cons of the aforementioned types? Good question! Internal frame packs work well for climbing trips while external frame packs work well for hiking prepared trails. However, unless you need a large track, don't worry about this feature.

10. Are you looking for a pack made of a specific type of material?

A: Something durable but not too expensive. Okay, 600 Denier Nylon is good.

11. Do you know your volume requirement in cubic inches and/or liters?

A: Unfortunately, no...I currently use a school backpack and I need more storage than that. Mid-size to large then.

12. Do you require hydration compatibility?

A: Nope.

13. Do you require water bottle pockets?

A: Yes.

A: What are the pros and cons? Both keep your pack held tight to your body, which is a very god thing. Can't think of a "con."

A: What are the pros and cons? Torso adjustment adjusts the height of the pack to your back.

I have quite a few packs. The most comfortable one I have is a Kelty Redcloud 5600. That doesn't mean it will be comfortable for you though. Ricks advice to "test drive" your choices is good advice.

No it isn't. A rear opening pack has an opening or several in the back of the pack. I just grabbed some pic to demonstrate. This pack has both top and rear openings.

Bottom opening would be for a sleeping bag, usually, and found on the bottom of the pack.

That is rare, usually a "I need the best pack for no money, whata I get?" is what normally happens.

My question is simple and will not repeat all the querry and replies so far.

Have you visited any of the dozens of outdoor and adventure gear stores in Chatanooga? You are in a university town covered with back packers, rock climbers and kyakers. You have one of each of the major chains in your town and several specialty stores that are staffed by hands on people. they can look at your list and talk over your requirements and some of your deletions, such as no shelter. I lived in your region hiking and camping for 50 years, you need shelter.

Restricting yourself to MOLLIE and ALACE gear will cripple you. It is one size fits all military gear built to outlast Marines and GI types that can tear up ball bearings. You can carry a considerable amount more gear using a properly fit pack.

Yeah, LOL, The lady says, "Oh, do you hike?"......Says. "No, not if I can help it..... I just collect gear....cheap".

Look like pretty good ones......They don't hike ...anymore. That's way they were for
sale.
I guess my point it that rather than obsessing on the latest, greatest, gear.....I would use whatever I had to see if it was for me or not, see what works, what don't....Then you have an idea of what works ....for you, not for just any one.
Then embark on a life time of upgrading.....LOL
