Animal Track ID Help

Hi everyone,

Hopefully this is the right forum to post this question: Can anyone who is experienced at such things positively ID the track in the attached photo? I think I know what it is, but someone is telling me that I'm wrong (I'm willing to change my tune assuming a correct ID). The chapstick tube is 2 5/8" long. Habitat is dense riparian river system (water almost gone) lined by very barren desert in southern AZ. Thank you for your help!

It's definitely cat. The lack of nails and two lobed front of the pad and three lobed rear of the pad pretty much nail (pardon the pun) that. Given the size I'd say mountain lion or related. The really good print is the right paw print. The second toe is longer so it has to be right foot. Probably rear right since it stepped on the other print.

Thanks Rick! That's what I thought it was too, but someone is telling me its too small for lion and so is a bobcat track, yet it seems much too large to be a bobcat? Thanks for your help! gringorio

I guess its very dry as the "feline" is using chapstick just to get by.

If it's a bobcat then it's a pretty big one. The bobcat tracks I've seen are a bit smaller, around 2 inches. I'm not a tracker by any means but a bobcat will go about 30 pounds. I suppose an older male could be larger and in the range of that track but I've never seen one personally. I've never seen an active mountain lion track either so I'm only guessing that's what it is based solely on the size. We have quite a few members from your area. Perhaps one of them can be a bit more definitive.

I think it's too big for a bobcat, i've never seen a bobcat track over 1 3/4 inches.......cougars tracks are generally between 2 3/4 to 4 inches. Also their stride, they generally step on their front tracks with rear foot. I would bet on adolecent cougar (mountain lion).

How longs a chap stick tube? An adult panther/cougar track is about as wide as an adult humans hand. I'd say you got a bobcat track.

2 5/8 inches according to the OP. That puts the track at 3 inches or a little over.

EDIT: I actually just resized my screen so the chap stick was actually 2 5/8 on my monitor and the track is 3 1/4 inches.
