A funny thing happened.....

I went on two military bases, this week. At each one, I had to go through a truck inspection, to get on base. At each one, I also asked "what do I need to do if I have a personal weapon, in the truck?". At one base I as told what I expected to hear.....Check it in at the gate, get a receipt, and pick it up on your way out. The other base was where I got a surprise. I asked the same question, but got a different answer. There, I was told, "just leave it in plain sight. You just can't conceal it, here." I stood there thinking...WTH? Keep in mind, that I was told this, by the guy with a side-arm and an M-4, who was inspecting my truck, to be sure nothing "bad" was being brought on base.

I have to go through a vehicle inspection every time I go on base because it is a "commercial" vehicle. Unless you are a resident (live on base) you cannot bring a weapon, nor can you check one in. Residents have to leave them in the base armory.

2d,, you got two very strange answers. I was in charge of gates at various times (US Air Force) post 9-11, and even as far back as 1972. On Air Force installations it is (or was) absolutely forbidden for a non Law Enforcement type visitors to introduce firearms or ammunition on to the installation (not referring to procedures for base residents). In fact they were not even allowed to be stored at the Gate. The vehicle operator was given two choices, 1) Immediate seizure of the weapon and Federal Court hearing, or 2) Turn around and go home.In fact , the second option was the discretion of the person on the post and did not have to be offered. My suggestion would be not to put much credence to either answers and avoid carrying a weapon or ammunition the day you go to a base in the future.

Read closely the warning signs near the gate and along the perimeter, it / they clearly spell out the prohibition

The one who said to just keep it in the open may have misunderstood my question. I'm hoping that he was telling me what the law say's for the state that I was in, and not what the base policy was.

I didn't know that the base commander set the policy for his own base. I was hoping that there were set policies, as I never know when, or what base I may have to go to.

I know that for every Submarine installation I have been on for the last 35 years - no guns. Can't speak to other bases though. Maybe it's that whole nuclear weapons thing?

I would always assume a "no weapons on base" policy, I just wonder about being able to check a weapon at the gate.
