Went to the local climbing gym today.

Today was my first trip to a climbing gym. I've done artificial walls before, and i never thought much of them, so i had always extended that mentality to climbing gyms.

Big mistake. Having a whole building dedicated to walls, etc gives a lot more options for creativity. This place had everything. It's been here forever and now i wish i'd gone in sooner.

I'm so sore i could barely lift the laptop when i got home. I think the lady had a great time too. I'm trying to get her addicted to climbing and i think this helped.

One of my grandson's has had two of his birthday parties at a climbing gym. He loves to climb and has a blast every time he goes. I'm the anchor guy. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

We had a good time. I finally got to climb in climbing shoes instead of my sneakers or hiking boots. It makes a world and a half of difference. I'm a *lot* more confident in these things, but i'm afraid i may be slipping; i'm used to priding myself on doing everything the hardest way possible...

No AC; just open doors and a fan. It was cool today, but it's pretty warm up at the ceiling.

You should take the opportunity if you can find a wall. It's a lot of fun, and top-rope climbing is as safe as climbing gets.

I was always a free-soloist, so i'm still getting used to using gear. It's got it's charms; like not breaking limbs.

There is an arcade close to where I live that has a inverted tredmill, rockwall, thing that tlits to replicate overhangs. I've never tryed but it just doesn't seem like it would be the same.

i've used one of those before. they are a load of fun. not the same - certainly - but they are their own kind of fun.

Canid... We have two different indoors gyms like that here. One in Orlando which is targeted more for top roping and the other one is in Tampa that is mostly boldering (no rope.. closer to free climbing) My son and I climb at least three times a week at one or other gym. It is great exercise and takes tons of mental focus. Both gyms are a very good but the Tampa gym has a very social climate. You can start climbing a route and before you know it there is a huge group of people helping you figure the best way to attack the problem. I am getting myself ready to travel to Utah within the year to climb real rock faces. I would suggest all to try and age is not an issue. We have most all age groups represented there with routes for all levels. It is a good time for sure

jargon nazi moment: bouldering is closer to free-soloing ( I consider it a sub-set myself, but most do not seem to ). Top-roping and bouldering both *are* types of free-climbing. the two terms are two different things.

My local gym has some nice facilities. I've been having a bear of a time on a bouldering problem in the cave they have. It is great to be able to chat with other climbers about a problem or route. On the other hand, while on the wall I had some guy on the route next to me shouting beta to me the whole time and i'd have preferred he kept quiet. On-sight climbing is a fun challenge and I prefer beta to be reserved til it's asked for.

I was in Utah a couple times this yeah and man is there a multitude of great climbing opportunities out there. What part are you headed for? Zion, Moab? I hope you love it. I can't wait to go back. One peak and a couple canyons teamed up with the weather to beat me down and I owe them some payback! :D
