New Knife Handles and A Tease

Experimenting with some pine cones to make knife handles.

Ground off the sharp edges.

Wrapped them tight with duct tape. They will change color as they dry, but the goal with the tape is to cause them to dry slowly and keep them from opening up. Once they dry, they will be cut into slabs and stabilized - at least that's the plan.

I've got some tanned cod fish skin (bought it, didn't tan it). I won't know what doesn't work until I try it. I'm hoping that it stays together like a piece of wood. If so, once it is dyed and stabilized it might look cool.

I saw some chain done like that as well, not my cuppa tea, but it looked cool.

I imagine that rugrat grenade, once sanded down, will look like scales. How big are those cones?

I didn't measure then, but would guess about 8". A friend sliced some pine cones (longitudinally with a band saw) before. The pattern of the cross section is really interesting. They were not dried out, so when they were stabilized they did not "take" the liquid - even with a 27" vacuum and 3500 psi. I know they'll take it once dried, but the trick is to keep them from opening as they dry. Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't - we'll all find out together.

I've got all of these taped up and sitting in a box. I'll probably collect a few more and try dipping them in wax with no constriction to see what happens.

Wish there was a way to preserve those "eyes" (dark sharp edges) in the cone. They look SO cool.

Could you Try to Put them In a Dehydrator Like you Do With Fruit and Such to Speed up the Drying of the Pinecones.Just a Thought.

I was going to say something similar to a dehydrator and put them in the oven to dry like a kiln. I am not sure the duct tape would survive the process though, just a thought.

Hey Crash why not try splitting one, putting gauze/cheesecloth between it and a board to act as a "wick" and taping to the board? That MIGHT speed it up some. Worst that could happen is you have gauze to use as a fire starter!
