Survival Day - Scouts

Well I'm new to this. I'm a leader in a local Scout group and we've a Scout camp coming up in the coming weeks. One the days on the camp is Survival day or Backwoods day. I have a couple of ideas in mind, but would like to hear any additional ideas that posters on here might have that could be added to the programme.

We would be doing activities like backwoods cooking, Bivvying, fire lighting, water stills, etc. Could anyone think of any fun games to add to the programme to living things up.

I recommend prizes. I usually make my prizes survival related, stuff that their parents might not think of buying them. The first year I did wilderness survival, I bought a bunch of fero rods from firesteel.com for $1 each and gave one to each boy. This accompanied a fire making lesson showing how to use it. I also do a fire lighting competition that the boys like. You might also look at shelter building. I have noticed that boys really need to see and do with regards to shelter building. They need to see how much stuff that is required to build a shelter, and that you don't necessarily need tools to do it. One year I gave a knife away as a prize. It was a Mora 711 that I bought at safezonellc.com. Sometimes boys need a little motivation to do something hard like shelter building. Shelter and fire IMHO are the two most important skills, so I put them first. Good luck.
