This is gonna be a bear to "how-to", bet here goes.

First thing is get familiar with what you are trying to do.

So, I start by making the C clamps. Pictures would not help with this so I'll explain it.
Find thin brass, my local Tru-Value has it. I went with 1/2" by 1 1/4" clamps.

DO NOT cut it into pieces first. Take the brass, draw into it how you are gonna cut it, and then plot every drill hole.

Drilling in a 1/2 by 1 1/4 piece sucks. Do the holes first, then cut it up.

Ok, I ruined it, but it's a learning process.

I just lost a much more wordy post to this thread, so this one will be concise.

Wet form the sheath.-Cut a piece oversized for the knife, get it dark with water, not soaking.

Fold the leather in half giving you a ridge where the spine of the knife will rest. Situate the knife in such a way as you have adequate leather on both ends.
Start squeezing the leather around the handle, especially where the blade meets the handle.

It should just about snap into the formwork you have done.

Get out your metal. I'm using thin brass barstock, sheeting, and copper pins.

The clamps need to be laid out on the barstock so you can drill the holes before you cut them to size. These are 1 1/4" and are about 3/8" inside the edge of the sheath.

I used a 1/4" copper bar and that mallet to square up the back.

Nope, some of the historic examples hat bronze welts but most are just the pins. Once you peen it tight, though, the blade never touches the rivets because the leather is so tight. The edge, essentially, rides in a groove that gradually gets narrower.

It's an odd concept. I've always thought it was a terrible waste of resources. It's surely a vanity, decoration deal.

How did you make the design in the leather? Was it a "stamp" (I geuss thats what you'd call it) or did you free hand it?

It's a bronze replica of an Anglo Saxon belt plaque. I smash it in there with a vice, got about 75% of the image.

Did you just hammer the copper pins to "rivet" them.

Looks like alot of tedious work. Are the brads copper nails? I'd like to see the backside, because it has inspired me to try something similar though not so much period correct.

The back is exactly like the front except the stamping.

I use a heavy gauge copper wire for the rivets. That's one of the things I need is a rivet making block. Doing it in the vise gets a little squirrelly. If the head offset front centerline of the wire, you get offset rivets like the first one on the big plate that covers the point.

I think you did a great job. I'd probably have hundreds of dimples in the brass plate after I peened the wire.

Not to mention my fingers. Where do you pick up the brass bar stock and sheeting. I've never seen work done like that before. I'm really impressed with that.
