I've got a new job that gives me 5 days vacation right away. With my current drama I feel the need to get away for a bit. The "surviving" thing has always been my thing...not so much my husband's. I'm thinking that even though it's just me and my son...that I still want to do a hike up overnight backpack trip with him to see if I can do it.
Do any of y'all have any recommendations of locations that are good for people like me and a 13 year old? If not locations...things to look for?

I don't know specifically where you are located but if the Delaware Water Gap is close or farther west is World's End State Park. World's End has a lot of trails from 1 mile to 60 miles long and everything in between. If you want to backpack or hike World's End might be a good place if it's close.

Not familiar with hiking in your area, but I have to ask....please don't be offended....is taking a vacation right away a good idea? A couple of reasons is why I ask. 1 - what message does it send to your new employer, and 2 - it will be a year before you earn any more vacation time.

Not judging - just something that may be a good idea to think about.

I hear ya, Crash...I was actually told that I have to take it before the holidays. :( Sucks too. I would really just rather let it fold over to next year or even break it up and take it when I NEEDED to for school holidays and such. It's a bank job though, so I'm required to take it all each year, take it within a certain amount of time, and it must be taken in 5 day intervals. No breaking it up to a few long weekends. Kind of sucks.
The vacation time was 2 weeks, but because I was hired mid year I only got one...but again...it must be taken within a certain time. (yeah...I know... strange)

Worlds End is a GREAT idea! I'll have to see if they allow for hike up camping. We're not too far from there. Certainly close enough for a short "holiday"!

+1! I agree! I remember when my dad took me fishin' when I was just a pup! He was from the big city of Chicago & didn't know a whole heck off a lot about it. He picked me up, threw me into the lake, & yelled "Catch fish, son! Catch fish!"

I made it to shore okay but had the devil's own time gettin' out of that burlap sack... :laugh:

Don't think ya'all will have that problem though. CS is right! Nothing beats the thrill of a young 'un catchin' a fish that they can eat later! :yes:
