A Gut Instict

I've been intrigued with this notion for quite some time and have been resisting it ever since.
Until now.
I guess I'm old enough to finally recognize that a gut instinct is something inborn and not easily overridden by intellect, hard as it seems at times.
Why am I even bringing this up now?
It finally dawned on me (won't bore you with particulars) that every time I resisted my gut instinct and tried to explain things away, I was wrong. EVERY TIME, if I'm being honest; and I really am.
My question is...
Are you more likely to follow your gut instinct and how has that served you?
When have you been wrong?

I believe that a combination of a gut instinct and intellect is crucial to survival ANYwhere. Ideally, it's a perfect balance of the two--a recognition of when to let one or the other take over.

Our "gut feelings" are, IMO our conscious and subconscious processing the inputs they receive. We may not always be able to coherently process that information, but we have a hunch, or "gut feeling".

It's a fine line between the gut and the brain, and knowing when to let one take the lead over the other is genius.
I struggle with it every day.

Well, if my gut wasn't connected somehow to my brain I wouldn't have this waistline I have now, that's for sure! :w00t: My wife, however, is always telling me to trust my instincts, & that seems to work more times than the other. Now if I could only lose some of this "gut...." :sweatdrop:

The only time I don't listen to it is when I'm driving down the street, and see a yard sale sign on the corner, and not seeing the address, I turn the right direction, (I thought) and it is the opposite way...every time.

B - My gut generally wins. If my gut is in direct conflict with my brain I want to back up and try to figure out why. I know I'm getting signals that are warning me of some kind of danger so I never push my gut feelings out of the way. If I can't figure it out then I default to my gut. I may have missed some really great deals along the way because I didn't trust the deal or the dealer but I'm still alive and that's the best deal of all.

My gut instinct is pretty good, I trust it 100%. But, it is based on wisdom, prior experiences, and the power of observation. More importantly, It's not based on prejudice, jealousy or the like.

I'm ashamed to say, I was at the back of the queue when this gut instinct you talk of was handed out. I rely on common sense, previous experience and intellect(what little I have) to get by.

In my line of work, my gut is usually right.
For example, Wednesday was supposed to be a 60% chance of rain, so we didn't tear a house open. It didn't rain wednesday, but we made sure everything was watertight. Thursday didn't rain at my house, but one of those small isolated storms rained over where the job is.

That said, my head was telling me, "go for it, you can get it done before the rain comes", my gut was saying "If it rains in this house, you'll be sorry".
I'm glad I trusted my gut and not my head. Gut is usually smarter than me.

I'm not certain if I trust my gut, my brain or the other brain many males have. The latter having led me to many bad choices over the years.

For now after all the experiences I have in urban and rural environments I think I'd rather trust a mixture of my brain and gut. Both together seems to be the way to go. If my dog seems skiddish about something I will definitely trust her instincts. Thank the hell of who ever for part dingos.

I am one of those people famous for having no luck but bad luck. That is the real description of what we are talking about, do you feel lucky/unlucky?

I also stay away from casinos, bars and direct marketing schemes.

Then there is the concept of "sutuational awareness", which has nothing to do with gut instinct or luck. It is learned observational skill. That creepy feeling is a warning that you have seen this setup before and need to perk up and pay attention. It is like realizing you smell something burning.

Actually, luck has nothing to do with it. Gut instincts or just instincts if you prefer is a natural part of our make up. It's inborn and an essential part of our make up just like a flinch at a loud noise. That feeling that something isn't quite right is part of your instinct and you can't learn or unlearn that. It's just there. I suppose it's the difference between sitting in the tree top looking down at the big kitty or being invited to dinner with it. If you climbed the tree because something didn't seem right then you have pretty good instincts. If you didn't climb the tree then you might want to check the menu.
