.22 Magnum Ammo quality & group expectation...???

Not looking for an ammo advise per'say, but what should be expected. As a general rule is the .22 magnum more or less accurate than a .22 Long Rifle. Yes, just cheapish ammo, not $32.00 a box ammo.

My point of reference is that today I was shooting my S&W Model 17 that I had reamed out to .22 Magnum. It has an 8 3/8" barrel and (today) I shot both Long Rifle and Magnum cartridges through the magnum cylinder and both did very well (By my standards).

So my question is: As a general rule is the .22 magnum more or less accurate than a .22 Long Rifle. All things being as equal as possible.

Yesterday at 21 Yards, the .22 Mags constantly shot groups 1/2 the size groups of the .22 LR and remember this is from the same .22 Magnum revolver and same cylinder. I was very impressed with both types of cartridges. Also shot both at 55 Yards, and the Magnum groups were 1/3 the size of the Long Rifle groups.

I have been shooting .22 LR ammo in the .22 Magnum for about 16 years now, with the only effect being slightly bulged LR cases.

Because of the variation of voloicities......What I think I'll do next is mark one of the six chambers with fingernail polish, and fire ten rounds from just that chamber, I expect it will reduce the group substantially.

SARKY, I think this guy on a different Forum nailed the reason........

He said, "I believe all cylinder conversion guns should be more accurate with the 22mag versus the 22lr, fact is that the bullet is closer to the rifling in the 22 mag. Probably why 22 shorts, shot from a rifle that shoots 22 short, longs and long rifle, will not be real accurate as the bullet has too long of a jump to the rifling. Just an opinion of course but usually the same reasoning for controlling the OAL on centerfire cartridges".

22 Mags in my Single Six are much more accurate the LR, with the different cylinders. No scientific tests, just shooting it a lot.

Are those 22LRs the Standard Velociy (subsonic) rounds you were testing a while back?
Also if you re-bored for magnum, aren't you inviting some tumble on the LRs as they leave the barrel?
Both would cut down your accuracy.

Yes, the .22 LR were Remington "Thunderbolt" ammo. There was no indication of tumbling on the target, and the 8 3/8" should stabilize the 38 gr. and 40 gr. bullets from both LR & Magnum. I really think the guy (See post #7) nailed the reason.

Two reasons: One is for front sights. The other is to mark a single cylinder. If you check all of your cylinders on at a time, one will always outperform the others. So for a critical shot like on the head of a spruce hen (Dinner), I want my best cylinder for the shot.

You guys have hit all around the true issue.

The magnum will be more accurate out of a .22lr barrel than it will out of a .22 mag barrel.

This is due to the fact that .22 mag barrels are actually cut .224 while .22 lr is usually cut .218-.222.

The conversion pistols do not shoot as well with the LR cartridge because the bullet in the LR is undersized for the mag barrel. The mfgs do this for liability reasons. That mag cartridge is building some real high preasure being squeezed down that LR barrel.

Sourdoughs reamed out conversion is pushing a .224 bullet down an undersized and very tight tube, just like ordering a tight custom target barrel

OK, here goes. The Ruger Super Single Six with both cylinders is going to be more accurate with the .22Mag cylinder. The why is simple, .22mag bullets are actually .224 dia. where as .22lr are .223 about. So the barrel has to be able to handle the larger diameter bullet without over pressure on the thin rf brass. The only way to do this is to have the barrel bored for the .22mag. The .22lr will still catch the rifling just not as well as the .22mag.

I guess I couldn't really tell if my Ruger Single Six shoots better with whatever cylinder, but I know that it's me, that's the problem, and I don't carry a rest and sand bags in the bush.

Sarky nailed it. The reason is that the 22 lr bullet has to jump further to the rifling. The magnum will be much closer causing it to be more accurate out of the same gun.
