How to treat "brackish" water

I've looked at the Katadyn water purifiers (http://amzn.to/lmHOtp) and have been thinking about getting one for our hiking trips; but for a SHTF situation here in FL, there is a lot of access to "backwater" canals. These canals open up into the gulf (or atlantic depending what coast you are on) and are slightly brackish.

Will I need to get a desalinator (http://amzn.to/jFRBwa) or will a regular filter be enough? Any references on how to process and purify brackish water? Anything else I should have asked but didn't?

Water filters such as Katadyn, MSR or even the emergency filters such as Pioneer are not designed for salt water. With as much access as you have to fresh water in Florida I think I'd opt to find fresh water. If your only option happens to be salt or brackish water then desalination, distillation or even reverse osmosis would be your only options for treating water. You could also cache fresh water if access to fresh water is not possible.

I ask because I literally live on a canal which would make access to that water very easy. Have you seen any good articles on reverse osmosis? Is this something I could do on my own or would expensive equipment and energy source be required? I've read about distillation techniques, and I'm planning to try some of them out but I don't think it will produce much in the way of volume. I'd like to be able to produce about 2 to 5 gallons of potable water a day.

I've read a few pieces on reverse osmosis set-ups for cleaning brackish water, but have not tried them. They are fairly expensive. You can also check desalinators at boating supply sites. They often carry small units for sail boats and such that while not real cheap, are a bit less expensive I believe.

Here's an old article in MEN that does a good job of talking about reverse osmossis. I've gone back to this article more than a time or two to brush up my knowledge on the subject. Remember that this article was put together in 1980 so the technology has improved quite a bit but the basics of the system are the same I guess.

You might also check into the SeaPack. I think it's been talked about a time or two on here. It uses a syrup mixture and an osmosis membrane to desalinate water. If I remember right it's less than $100.
