View Full Version : Saving $ on ammo is not always a good thing

Bought some ammo at one of the local gun shops the other day. Looked like a real deal for hog hunting. Best of all it was $6 a box cheaper. Here's the lowdown on it. Sold under the name of Wolf. 150 gr steel cased 308. Noncurosive.(spelling?) Made in Russia. Figured it would be ok in my old H&R Ultra. Hmmmmmmmmmm. Should have known better.
Took a box of them out to see how they shot today. Normal group at 100 yards with Winchester ammo about 1 1/2" so figued anything in that area would be good. First round out of the box didn't fire. Same thing for the next 11. Finally number 13 fired. Wondered if it might be a malfunction of the gun so got out some of my regular ammo and tried again. Fired every round like it always has. Btw the one round that fired of the Wolf was about 5" off my aim point. Anyway. To make this short and sweet I stopped at the shop coming home and had a talk with the guy I bought this stuff from. Showed him the misfires and requested that he take it all back and refund my money, which he did. Told the wife if I ever come home with a big smile telling her how I saved a bunch on ammo again to hit me in the head with a bat and when I wake up tell me how dumb I am.
Don't know if any of you have bought this ammo or had the same experience but I for one will never buy it again.

I've shot a lot of Wolf and never had a problem with it. I've shot both 7.62X54 and 5.56 and never had a FTF. Doesn't mean your stuff is good just that I haven't had any trouble with it. I must have 2500 rounds of the stuff or did before the canoe accident.

The guy at the shop told me he had a few complaints of misfires but nothing like this box I tried to shoot. He did say that all the complaints were from 308 users so he may have got a bad case. Who knows. I have talked to a couple of local guys that use Wolf alot(not 308) from the same shop and they say like you that they haven't had any trouble. Thanks for the comments Rick. I may call tommorow and see if he has some 308 from a different case. Won't tell the wife if I give it another try.:>)

I had to go check. I didn't want to fib to you. The 5.56 comes from the Arab Emirates and is made by Adcom but the 7.62X54 is Wolf.

I have had a problem with the 5.56 jamming and it is extremely smokey. I have never real heard anything good about Wolf, other than the price.

I've put quite a few rounds of Wolf down range in 7.62 X 39 and never had a FTF or any other problem with it.

I don't shoot anything steel cased in my weapons. It's hard on ejectors and extractors because "soft steel" casings are still a good bit tougher than brass. I have heard many mixed reviews about Wolf.

The only experiance with Wolf has been the 7.62 X 39 both FMJ and SN thru an SKS.
I did have one misfire in maybe 300 rds in the middle of a load....When empty reloaded it and it fired the second time.
I did have the bolt and firing pin worked on, seems the model I used to have, before the tragic boat accident, didn't have a return spring on the firing pin (newer Yugo model)
I will agree that hunting ammo should be the best, and best shooting ammo, you can get your hands on or load.......Why spend all your time planning, stalking, sitting, chaseing, waiting on your game animal....Only to have that "One Shot" misfire. No Way!
Spend $500 bucks for fuel, lodging, food, adult beverages and then cheap out on $20 bucks for ammo......No.
Now we get to the shoot cheap ammo for practice.....I do it a lot, but I don't touch sight or scope settings,..... They are set up for the "Good Stuff".
So they shoot all over the place, so what as long as you don't take it seriously, just enjoy the bang, the recoil, fire ball, and the smell.......Yeah!

bargain basement ammo is for the range and the range alone. provided you know the error of your shooting form, firearm and sighting (and probably clean your firearm meticulously) i don't see anything wrong with dialing in your shooting with the cheap stuff. it'll only be as consistent as your ammo's propellant and bullet tolerances allow, but if your consistency is falling within that range of error, your shooting is still not suffering, relatively speaking.
now if you're having case integrity issues that's a different story; chuck the junk and don't buy more.

I have had great luck with Wolf, in .223.
I guess I lucked out....my mini-14 loves the stuff.

Steak for the grill? You're kidding right? Honey, look, it's $6.99 a pound for gosh sakes!

She doesn't read this.....Heh, Heh, Heh..My first wild turkey was about $1200 bucks a pound....And I really don't like turkey all that much.
It's about the "Hunt"..........That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I use the Wolf varieties in my mini-30, 7.62x39, and it works real good, very accurate, but I do get a few duds. Maybe it's the .308 ammo that's defective. I haven't noticed any fouling problems with it either, unlike some of the cheapo .22 lr ammo I get from Remington and Winchester.

Want to thank all you guys for your comments. Good and bad. I've pretty much decided to stick with the Winchester ammo I have shot for several years now and bite the bullet as far as price. ( no pun intended)

I have had some problems with steel cased Silver Bear extracting in 5.56. But, never had a problem from Wolf, Brown Bear, Silver Bear or what ever in various other calibers.
I ordered this from Palmetto State Armory:
Product Name: Federal XM193F Brown Box 5.56mm 55gr FMJ
Item#: 500
Unit Price: $5.89
Quantity: 50
Shipping Method: Ammo$12
Less than $300 dollars for a 1000 rounds of brass cased ammo ain't bad.

For the record, Wolf does make an exceptional Gold Match .22 Long Rifle load. It's a moly-coated 40gr solid LRN. Best shooting .22 ammo I've ever put through both my match .22 and my plinkers.
Now, as far as their center-fire stuff goes; I won't touch it.

I've only shot a few rounds of Wolff so I can't vouch for it's reliability, ut it's some dirty stuff-loaded with Charcoal dust perhaps?
Charcoal dust (chuckle).
You bet Billy Bob. You just hold that steak right chere by the muzzle. When I set her off, Poof, instant grilled steak. Oh, yeah. Mind your fingers.

Haven't had any trouble with Wolf that I remember; agree that it is a filthy s.o.b. to shoot tho'. THe cheap ammo I stay away from is Tula. Jammed up the M-4 and the mimi-14 after about 5 rds.

I have been told on this very forum that it was physically impossible to jam the new M-4. My word, I have been misled!
It wasn't so much a jam as it was a fail to eject properly. There's a difference you know. It's pretty much impossible to jam an M4. An M3.5 is a whole different story

Let us simply call it a failure to function, which we are told can not happen with a gun that just keeps going and going like the energizer bunny!
Failure to function is so...well, so....crass. Let's call it a pause between functioning periods, shall we? You have a period of functioning, a pause, then a period of functioning again. Not too unlike Congress. They have a pause, a pause, a period of near functioning followed by a pause.

If they had more pauses it would be better for us all.
Fortunately, not all of them are witches. I've heard that on the internet so I know it's true. They are you. I heard that, too.

One thing to keep in mind is that wolf is military style ammo. This means they use a much harder primer than commercial brands. To remedy this, you must install a harder firing pin spring to up the velocity of the firing pin. Downside to this is a much stronger trigger pull and if you shoot alot, you my shorten the life of the firing pin.
My S&W would eat anything I put in it untill I changed my spring to reduce trigger pull. Now I stick to Federal Ammo For reliable shooting. I will still put a few boxes of wolf through it on occasion to practice malfunction drills.
This is just my experience, hope it helps.

I don't believe that Wolf is manufactured Mil "style" ammo, I think it's just crappy ammo.
Mostly I only use Wolf brand in an SKS, which is a Military issue, and still have miss-fires from time to time.
I did have the bolt and firing pin worked on, as the Yogo model I have didn't come with a return spring, and firing pin was garfed up at some point by not having the retaining pin lined up propertly, when assembling it.
I guess I would have to worry about any ammo that I need to change a spring on, just to shoot.
This of course is my experiance and opinion only.
You get what you pay for.

I don't think wolf is crappy ammo (although it isn't great either), they just use really hard primers. I can put the stuff in my buddies Berreta 92 and it fires all day long. My Smith was that way till a wanted to reduce trigger pull. Malfunction drills are great with it though!
