Well I am going for a short three day walk (18+ Miles the first day) and 9'ish miles the next two days. Weather looks fair. Lots of BIG bears in the Russian Lakes Area. I'll be alone when hiking, and sleep in forest service cabins at night. I have never been around the Russian Lakes Trail System & not sure where it starts, but I think I know where it ends, so I'll park there (the end) and find a trail and hump it backwards, and then forward.
So what should I pack......? This trip is mostly for exercise & sight seeing.

I'd go REI style. Ultralight gear and freeze dried food. Bring what you need and leave no trace. I like to bring small field books to study up on things I come across. A pint and some sqeeter dope. Oh yeah, toilet paper.

Just think back to what gear you humped around when you were guiding hunting clients and then lighten that load by 98%.

Have it catered.....stash food, cooking stuff, sleeping stuff at the cabins ahead of time....That way you can take all the knives and ammo you can carry.
Oh, Yeah, keep the TP with you.

Umm, but coming back will take at least 2 days, so consider that, unless you are planning to live there and then you sould take a lot of gear. Oh and take a good map also because thinking you know where something is, is not very reassuring, you might walk right by the trail or cabin.
Some bear spray (or whatever its called), i dont know how well it works but better than just a knife to fight a grizzly or something.
oh, and I agree with finallyME a camera is a good idea (upload them and send pictures afterwards)

I have one of those gut feelings here. Maybe I'm wrong buttttttttttttttttttt. This post by SD reeks a bit of sarcasium .(spelling?) Can't quite see this man going into an area he doesn't know as unprepared as it sounds. What do I take? What kind of knife do I carry? " I don't know where the trail starts but I THINK I know where it ends." This just doesn't sound like the Sourdough I have been reading since I entered the forum. IMHO

Well, I am back alive. was good exercise, most of the trail is under canopy so not much view. Had one Black Bear in camp last night was a good photo opt. I am sore and tired. I did (10)Ten miles yesterday in exactly 3 hours, that is about 18 minutes for a mile, or 3 1/3 miles per hour (Not very good). I did 10.6 miles today in 3 hours and 50 minutes. O'Well getting old sucks.

Who were you racing? When the boys and I go out they leave me in their wake. I want to "stop and smell the multi-flora roses" if you know what I mean. I see much more when I take the time to stop and look around. I usually catch up when they take a break or they come back looking for the corpse if I take too long.

It would not help anyone. I took my 2.4# sleeping bag "Liner" that I bought just for 30 days trekking Kiwi-Country. No stove, an old folding knife, Some nibbles, three cans of soda, two cans of beer, a handful of extra ammo. No rain gear, no survival gear, no camera, Then I just tossed in unknown stuff to get the weight up to 45 pounds. I forgot I took a hunk of cooked Halibut, and an old Burrito I found in the refrigerator. No tent, no fire starting stuff, no coat, no jacket. Took the Ruger 44/77 with 320 gr. hard cast Cor-Bon flat-nose.
My only real danger was, all the bears in that area. I guess if I had a point to make it is: Just do it, really, just do it. Don't obsess about doing it right, just do it. There were enough spruce hens on the trail that I would never starve. I did eat some "Fireweed" plants (just the tops) they were bitter.

45lbs and no fire-starting stuff? No rain gear, coat, tarp, signaling, map, etc? No First Aid stuff?
If this was a newbie, we'd be all over his a$$!
I guess your original OP question about "What should I pack?" was meant to be facetious.
You know your area far better than I do but I can't agree with that philosophy. Even in local terrain in summer I obsess over what is correct for the trip depending on how far on or off trail I'll be, the weather forecast, the terrain, etc. Even a sprained ankle, surprise thunderstorm or unexpected availability of water (or lack of) can drastically change the dynamics of the trip and pose some dangers. I don't want a 45 pound pack either. You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din.

This thread cuts right to core of what I believe about this Wilderness Survival Forum. And as this belief has not altered from the day I joined, I feel it is true for myself and a few others, most of whom abandon the forum.
Some day in a few hundred years archaeologist will be digging up "Billions" of shinny new, pretty "Survival Kits". They will say, "Wow, look this guy had many "New, Un-used" Survival Kits. My guess is that the Archaeologist will assume the kits were intended as a substitute for going into the wilderness.
I guess I look at it this way. With luck I'll live long enough to end up in a Pioneer Home (Alaska owned Nursing homes). With even more luck I'll be sitting around with a others who wandered the wilderness for it's gifts to the mind & soul, but the greatest gift being the continued rebirth of a strong, healthy body.
I will self abort if I have to listen to the endless stories of, "Well let me tell you, about the shinny Survival Kit I built back in 1993, why it contained, Bla, Bla, Bla".
Winnie

I don't quite get what you're trying to say there SD. There's a big difference between those so called shiny new survival kits and being prepared. Personally I happily take a few things I consider(note that, I consider) sensible and prudent to take along with me even when I just go out for a walk round the fields out back for a couple of hours. I doubt I will ever need what I take, but I'm a cautious kinda gal.
You have one big advantage over the likes of me, you have lived in true wilderness for many years. You're comfortable going out and taking risks. Please don't take the Mickey out of those of us who won't.
Perhaps you won't make it to the Pioneer Home. Instead of archeologists it will be SAR members saying, "if only he had carried one of those shiny new survival kits." I sincerely hope that's not the case. As for me, I'll continue to live by that tired old saying that keeps cropping up around here. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
It really boils down to your perception of threats. You carry a weapon for bears but would belittle anyone that didn't carry one and got eaten. Can't the same be said of those who don't carry a survival kit and die of exposure?

Yes, that is true. My endless rant is: People just need to get out, kit or no kit. The shinny kit is like people who tie flies for a hobby. If someone is a fly-fisherman and wants to tie some flies in the dead of winter, I say good on him. But to tie flies and never go fishing is just being a fly manufacturer, not being a fisherman.
Building a Survival Kit, is "Building a Survival Kit". It d@mn sure ain't the same thing as putting ones self in the outdoors where one might need the shinny survival kit.
I think people try to have a vicarious outdoor experience through the construction of the kit.

This is the truth:
On the way out yesterday I encountered two groups heading in. One group was thee women in there thirties on well used Mt. Bikes.......They had no packs, no panniers, just small fanny packs, which I assume had mostly spare bike parts. They wanted a group photo with their camera, which I took for them. I asked, "How far in are you going"...? They said, "We will push through to the other end today" (21.6 miles).
Looking as those ladies I could tell that they could carry those bikes and hike through if need be.
The other group was three young (mid to late twentys) men with massive towering packs that raised 2 feet above there heads. Huge packs, yes brand new, all of their clothing and boots were brand new. They did not even make eye contact.
I'll take a wild guess which group had three shinny new store bought survival kits. And which group knew their ability, and their needs for the project at hand.

I was asked once after pretty much destroying my race car in a long endurance race...."How much money did you win?"
I answered "None, just this checkered flag", but added, "What do you do for fun?"\
Guy says, "I'm a Bass fisherman, got me a big boat, all the gear, catch a lot of fish"
So I asked, "What do you do with all those fish"?
He says, "Throw them bacK"
So my point is, that even if some one ties flies and never fishes.....That's up to him, and I'm sure he doesn't really care what anyone else thinks.
Each to his own.............

Most people here do "get out" just not the way you think they should. You happen to live in the wilderness and for you it's no special effort to walk out your front door and practice those skills on the way to the outhouse. I can walk 10 miles and still be in the city surrounded by tall buildings and concrete.
The shinny kit is like people who tie flies for a hobby. If someone is a fly-fisherman and wants to tie some flies in the dead of winter, I say good on him. But to tie flies and never go fishing is just being a fly manufacturer, not being a fisherman.
It's like people who watch sports and never play anything...which is much worse IMO than making flies. At least you can sell those.
Building a Survival Kit, is "Building a Survival Kit". It d@mn sure ain't the same thing as putting ones self in the outdoors where one might need the shinny survival kit.
Wouldn't it be helpful to have a"Survival Kit" before you actually need one? That's what preps are for. Also, surviving SHTF in you neck of the woods is very different from mine.
I think people try to have a vicarious outdoor experience through the construction of the kit.
People should be given credit for doing ANYthing...and starting with a Survival Kit, shiny or not is a step in the right direction.
You are certainly entitled to your rant but at least be fair and consider the bigger picture.

Sourdough - even you have evolved with the use of kits. You and I joined the forum at about the same time. I remember early on that you said, when we were having a discussion about first aid kits, that you did not carry one. There are others that still don't as well. One day, after a fall and lacerating your hand you saw the need to carry a first aid kit.
All of us, no matter who we are will evolve in our thinking and the way we do things. As time goes on - Some might carry more, while others will carry less. It really matters not from an individual viewpoint what others think of the gear that anyone else carries. What matters is that it is exactly what the individual needs, or perceives themselves to need.

Crash, You are correct. BUT......
For me I would rather die in the wilderness for want of a survival kit. Than have a hundred survival kits, and die for want of the Wilderness.
Now that would look damn good on my headstone.)
Why must it be either/or? Can't it be both?
I don't know about you but I think my headstone would look real good with nothing but a birth date on it and me trying to read it.

Why does it have to be one way or the other? I would carry, at the least, a "10 Essentials kit," weather it's shiny or weather-beaten. That's just being prepared. Going unprepared in any type of Wilderness is for Numpties and Dan'l Boone! I do think the term "survival kit" is mis-placed. If you just take the proper equipment & know what you're doing you should be just fine. Yeah, you're crowing about it now because it never went South, but if it would have somebody else would be living in your cabin. Taking risks is never a good idea & doesn't have to be done to enjoy the outdoors. I think you're correct in encouraging people to get outside and enjoy the outdoors, but not at the expense of risking their lives. :cool2:
