An important note is that eventhough I was 100% certain these were greenbriers I did not want to eat them without first going back to the books and getting the skinny just to make sure.

I thought some may confuse the ash seeds with maple seeds, so I thought I'd show the difference there as well. I was really surprised to see an ash fruiting as most have long since been dead with the introduction of the Emerald ash borer beetle.

To my knowledge there are no toxic species of greenbrier. I think it tastes a lot like green peas, or maybe snap beans. I harvest the top 6-12 inches depending on where the limber part ends, usually at the second leaves below the shoot. I eat them straight off the plant as they are usually very juicy. I'm glad you wanted to go back and check the books before eating. Very wise!

On comparison, milkweed and dogbane look nothing alike, LOL. Thanks for another great video!

Ya, the only time I think milkweed and dogbane could be mistaken is in shoot form in mid spring. I've tried making several vids to show the difference, but technology fails me, or my ability to use it consistently. LOL!

I think the greenbriers are an easy ID and I've never seen anything that closely matches these features and could be mistaken for them. But, beyond that I wanted to refresh my memory as to what parts were good to eat and whether they could be eaten raw, or should be cooked. Next time I go out I'm gonna chomp into a couple fresh, crisp shoots and get a taste.

On a side note, when googling around I came upon Wkipedias page on the greenbriers and they said the berries and leaves of a certain species of Smilax were used by the smurfs, smurfberries, lol. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smilax

Don't forget about Green Deane's youtube channel. If I remember he did a video on greenbriers.
There are at least 6 different species where I live, all observable in my parents yard lol. All of them taste the same to me, and are often quite juicy. I wonder if it might be one of the "water vines" I read about, that can be cut when large, to extract water.

According to my literature, the roots can be dug up, crushed and boiled in water, then the resulting "soup" be used to make something like jello, or soup thickener. I have not tried this yet, so if you decide to try it, let us know how it turns out.

Beware planting them in your yard. If they get established, you'll never get rid of them.. Around here we consider them invasive.. they will literally TAKE OVER! Might be a better idea to just remember the spot you found them and let them grow there!

Ya, I'd be careful where I plant them if I do. Don't need anymore invasives. Maybe I should plant it where the Garlic mustard grows and has already killed off everything else. See who wins greenbrier vs. GM. LOL!

That would be a really interesting experiment. I'm putting my money on the briers.

The roots can be very large. Some of the ones we've dug up from mom's yard will cover over a square foot. It only takes a small piece of the root for them to spread and multiply. If you do dig one up, just be aware that to get rid of it, you'll have to dig up the root and keep all the berries picked. I'll try to get some pics today of a few species growing in my yard. Might even dig a root to show that too.
