Drought Declared!

Contrary to popular belief, Great Britain isn't always wet. The East of England(where I live) has been declared in a Drought and the Central and Southern Regions are at Risk.

We haven't had any rain to speak of since the middle of March. The weather so far this month has been cool and dry. The veggies I planted out have hardly grown, there simply hasn't been enough warmth.
For a little country that can get lost in most of the Sates of your country, this is a worrying time. We have already had some wild fires earlier in May, another has been burning for a few days. A lot of food crops are under threat of failing.

Sourdough get your dancing shoes on, I need payback on that snowdance.

Ghee sorry to hear about your weather owes. I live in VA and the early spring was so wet and cold we could not plant anything. Finally it warmed up a little and we were able to plant our garden. Then it rained to teh point the garden was stah/ding in water. Then we had two weeks of heat and no rain and things began to suffer. THank goodness we have had showers the last two days to make the garen really grow.

I just never think of England as being dry and cool. Wet and cool yes. I am so sorry that you are having a bad gtowing season. If I could i would put some rain and warm weather in an envelope and send it to you. That would realy get teh postal system going! HAHAHA

Are you able to water or is that being restricted also? I know there is noting like the water can from the sky but just thinking that is all. Hope you have better weather soon especially if your food prices are rising like they are here.

I feel your pain, I live in central Texas and can't remember the last time it rained more than 10 drops.

I'm able to water the garden, I have quite a few rain barrels set up so that the little rain we have had has not been wasted. The reserviors are OK at the moment so no bans have been issued yet.
I seem to recall we were in a similar position in the early spring BTW. Us gardeners are faring OK. It's the farms that are suffering. I've been for a few walks round and about and the Rapeseed is already falling from the pods and the wheat is very stunted and patchy.
Shiftyer, how do you cope with so little rain? Irrigation or just growing drought tolerant plants?

I've done a small container garden this year on a shaded porch. I've noticed alot of farmers haven't bothered to plant this year which isn't a good thing because the fields are left plowed and bare. Aside from cotton this isn't a big farming area although some try to grow corn, not sure why because the corn fields ALWAYS look pathetic. We are into june now and should be on the 2nd cutting of hay and most haven't had enough for a 1st cutting. Last years drought killed tons of my trees, I fear this year will take care of a bunch more.

Seems like we almost drown for a year of two and then beg for water the next year. Makes me happy we dug the well an extra 150 feet deep!

I know that you are very happy to have gotten the rain Winnie. Like I said whatever thd good Lord pours out of his watering can will do more than all the water we can put on plants. It just amazes how that happens. Glad you got some rain. Also glad to know that you are able to water and have not been put on restriction. I hope that you have a much better garden than you are anticipating. Nothing beats the taste of fresh vegetables from the garden.

OGI, how can you possibly think Hollywood would lie?LOL In the Winnie household winter foggy weather is known as Sherlock weather ala Basil Rathbone 1930's films;). But this year has seen some strange stuff happening at the wrong time.

All we can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope Him upstairs turns the tap on. I'll certainly have some veg, the soft fruit crop is totalled except for the Strawberries. Ah well, hey ho!
