it is at least as much about what you know how to do with what you have that would determine how you fare against what will most likely be an unforeseen emergency as it about what you have stocked up in your home.

Well one other way it could happen is an epidemic. If something went out of control in a lab or something, and started killing people like in sci-fi movies.

it dosen't have to get out of a lab, there are enough dangerous pathogens 'in the wild' so to speak to cause serious problems in any population-dense area. one more thing i try to keep in mind but not sweat too much, or i'd never sleep. it is a good reason for me to keep a HEPA scrubber and enough visqueen for a room on hand. i use them both anyway, so it's not like i'm specifically out anything for it.

Well generally they have most wild ones under pretty good control in developed countries. Unless, AIDs mutated in a way that it could travel through the air we breath (it can mutate easily, which is why it is hard to control). That would suck big time.

many of our pathogens have a nasty habbit of becomming multiple antobiotic resistant, which could cause serious havock in a large city or several before it was brought under controll.

Staph and Tuberculosis are good examples. only chance is keeping some of their strains from becoming epidemic in many areas, developed or not. community aquisition makes a particularly dangerous vector.

it is unlikely for example that a major epidemic of MRSA or VISA would be a large population killer, but think of the social impact, when people are afraid to interact. how that might affect a population's disposition?

I don't agree. Acting in this way is going to make you a target. Imagine making the mistake of looting from some of the members on this forum, for example. Or, inadvertantly looting from their friends and family. You may get away with it for awhile. But eventually you will make a name for yourself and will be a main target for elimination.

NOT a good solution.

Rather than planning on looting to survive, you are far better off to spend your energies planning how you are going to take care of yourself and those you care about without having to resort to looting, stealing, and cheating - and that includes how to deal with potential looters.

Additionally, when normalcy returns - and it will return eventually - what do you think is going to happen to the known hard core looters that are still alive? Prison. Firing squads. Retribution.

I agree. Here in northern NH there were never any ticks. Even the old timers had never seen them in the area. By about 1990 ticks had expanded their range northward - along with a variety of other species that only lived south of us - and brought with them Lyme disease.

The rest of our friends had moved firmly into normality and regularity and cloneizational techniques buy that time. Those were some of the best years of my whole life. Just roaming the hills and valleys, creeks and wetlands like that, with my best buds, way back then.

Those who discourage you, do not know what you know about this stuff. Plus, they certainly do NOT know as much about it as we, collectively, here in this fine forum, know about stuff like SHTF and BoB's and SAK's and EDC's and long lasting power foods etc!:cool:

My former step-son (ex-wifes son) whom I still help raise, just turned 14 yrs old on monday. I started teaching him about wilderness survival when he was just 3 yrs. old. He as a young teenager already has 11 yrs of practical survival training and experience. At 8 yrs. old he already knew very well what local vegetation he could or could not eat, how to fish using primitive techniques, trap hunt, build shelters, etc.

I have every confidence in him that if TSHTF, he would do well.

Learn, practice, learn more, practice more, etc, etc, etc.

I am going to have to use that term quite often, sheeple.

I always note the herd mentality of people as a whole.

I believe that during a catastrophe these "sheeple" can become destructive to not only themselves, but also others around them. A good example is post Katrina New Orleans.

WildGoth - You might not like it at the moment (I never did) but your parents are still the authority figures in you life and will continue to be until you are of legal age. If they disagree with you about the need to prepare for some unknown event, then consider how you are approaching them with the need to prepare. If you are telling them the world is going to end and we are doomed to economic collapse and death by some dreaded disease then change your approach. Talk to them about the need to prepare for an earthquake, landslide, severe winter weather, tornado or whatever natural event is appropriate to your home. That's something they can certainly relate to. They purchase insurance on their home and car not because the know something will happen but because the believe it could. Skills and equipment, like a Bug Out Bag, is the same type of insurance.
