in social studies today we were talking about U.S expansion expanding coast to coast our teacher asks where did the U.S did or could expand and someone said florida and another person thought that the underground railroad was a real railroad and used in the industril era it makes me scared to think that this people will someday run the world and one good think that comes out of it is that at least i know when SHTF will happen:D:eek:

Yeah, I can say that the majority of kids in my school as well think like this as well. One time my history teacher showed them a map, and they were like "since when was Russia that big?"

Actually we moved here because there were too many engineers in Finland, and there weren't enough here so they offered a sh!tload of money for whoever decided to move to America. Basically the bribed us. The sad thing is that the majority of the people in all the places my dad has worked were immigrants, who moved for the same reason.

Basically the people who are ensuring that you get electricity every day to do your daily tasks are immigrants. A tad ungrateful to belittle the guy who gives you electricity to be doing what you are doing right now :p

(don't take it personally, I'm just strongly against all the actions that USA has done that infringe on UN laws, like invading Iraq. You never bothered to get permission from the UN (which you agreed to do in the event you ever went to war) so basically you are just as bad as Iran when they didn't tell the UN about making nuclear reactors (and yet you accuse them of being the bag guys when you are on the same exact level) so I got my reasons not to be grateful. I don't like anyone who doesn't keep to his promises, including countries)

EDIT: I forgot we weren't supposed to talk about politics, but figure you might wanna see this anyways so it could give you a different view on things

I have my reasons that I don't like the American government, you have your reasons why you do like it. One thing I don't like is being told I should like it just because I live here. Everyone is patriotic, just we happen to be patriotic to 2 different sides.

I suppose Chris has a point not letting people start topics on politics.

Personally, I would love to live in Finland again. There is more snow and the type of stuff I like over there (besides mosquitoes). Plus all the nightclubs*

*Finland has "Northern nights" where in the winter you might not see the sun for about 2 months because of the high latitude. "nightclub" + "2 months of night" = :D

My brother-in-law and nephews (all of whom are in involved in power generation, transmission and/or grid transfer. One is an engineer by the way with 3 degrees) will be pleased to know that foreigners are running the electricity for us.

Where do they work? My old man has worked in Alstom, Foster-Wheeler, and burns-and-roe (spelling?). He works in the designing of the power plants. So I suppose the different fields of power generating would employ different peoples. But as I said, I would like to end this conversation because obviously it is not making anybody feel any better.

As preparation for the citizen's test, the gubmint gives you a handy-dandy kit listing among other things, 100 questions, from which you'll be asked a selection, the answers, and a bit of history behind them. (It's actually semi-interesting).

The questions are basic US Civics, such as "Who would become president if the Vice President should die?", "How many Senators are there from each state?" "How many stars are on the US Flag?" and so on. Most are pretty straightforward "Who is the President today?" for example, but others are a bit tougher. "Name the 13 original colonies?"

The weekend before my test, a bunch of us sat in someone's living room and I read the questions to the collected USAians in the group. Nobody got all the questions right (except me and the Canadian guy who became a citizen the year before) but one girl struggled on all of them.

My favorite moment was when we came to the question "Name 2 of the countries against which the USA fought in World War II?" She started arguing.

"Oh, we did not fight against Italy - we like Italy. That book's wrong!"

She was a college graduate.

Ain't this a great country or what? Here in my neck of the woods we can handle almost anything. People all over the world pity us "poor Hillbillies" and tell jokes about us. They have convinced themselves they would rather live in the "civilized" cities than this part of the country. We just laugh like Hell and help spread how bad it is here. Kinda reverse psychology, we could form our own little country and do very well. We are kinda patriotic and help our neighbors which is out of fashion most other places. We even have prayer in school and always before any local sporting event. Backwards ain't we?"?

Never understood the people that come here from other countries, they come here to make money and while making it downgrade us, well if its that bad then go the heck home, and Finland engineering is no better or smarter than American, and if you were bribed to come well then what's that say about you because you took the bribe.
My personal opinion on the U.S is we are the biggest boys on the block so if the Prez wants to invade then who's gonna stop us? Sure not Finland. And all these other countries want our help so.... they get what we give them and that's what you get when you ask for help, what that person or country wants to give you.
Just my opinion.
