Survival weekend with the kids

Me and a friend are going to take our kids on a survival weekend. Their are seven kids all together ages 5,6,6,8,10,12 and 12. All of these kids are experienced campers, we hit the woods every weekend just about. But survival weekend is going to be a surprise to them as we are going to trick them with a broken down truck while on a blackberry picking trip. The plan is to leave on a friday about noon and surprise them a couple hours before dark.

Any suggestions on what you think will be the most important things to teach them? Any items that you think i should take just in case? In my truck at all times is a first aid kit complete with Benadryl, and stitches, then i have a ax, string, rope, and for the trip im going to take a pot to cook in unless we can find something else to use.

purifying water is first on the list, but we really dont have a need for it as their is springs everywhere here, then how to build a shelter, and fire makeing, plus all of out meals will come from the land (this is why we chose to wait until blackberries were ripe).

Interesting exercise. The most important thing I think would be to teach them to remain calm, develop a plan to get rescued. Make it fun for them. Could be fun.

Since they are still quite young, I would make sure they are fully hydrated before trekking off. Hopefully they won't be in as much of a rush to start drinking their very hot water and burn themselves. It's probably not as bad where you are, but I'd also carry some Gatorade (liquid or mix) in case they have sweated too much and need to replenish their electrolytes.

I know you have posted earlier about placing caches of food like a hard boiled egg in a bird's nest to make them look for resources. You may also want to incorporate normal 'litter' one may find while out on a trail.

You might even have them help clean litter & junk that others have left off the trail and try to think how they might use the stuff. :nod:

These are all very good ideas, their are several packets of Gatorade in my first aid kit, the entire trip is about having fun, and learning hopefully i will learn something as well. This group of kids will be so happy that we aint going home that they will not have time to panic, or worry. I will post pics to show you all how it went.

The "surprise" aspect of this outing is a brilliant idea on so many levels!
It's fun, it demystifies a potentially scary situation and it makes kids think and get creative when there's little at stake.
You can empower them by implementing some of their ideas (good or bad) about what to do and how to do it. There's nothing like learning on the job.

You do have an interesting idea. I like "B",s idea about empowering them to make suggestions. This is the time to allow them to make mistakes and be creative ,when they have adults as a safety net. Look forward to hearing how it goes.

A suggestion: perhaps take some sort of comfort food type snack. You do have little ones with you and it may help them get over the "hump" when they get hungry.
