What about Sea Oats......?

I find a lot of sea oats growing on the beach here, I should think they could be harvested for animal feed, or human food.......??? Any reason why not......???

If we're talking about the same thing....

Sea oats, or Uniola paniculata, have edible seed heads that can be cooked like oatmeal. I have read about them, but never eaten them. Around here (and probably most coastal places) they are primarily used to stabilize the sand dunes, which in turn provide protection from storm surges or abnormally high tides. In Florida (and probably other places) they are a protected grass for that reason.

They grow wild here. The interesting thing is this time of year last years oats are still standing and fully dried out. I have been on a quest to find arctic survival food that is available in the winter.

Yep, here in sunny Florida the local authorities take a very dim view of anyone damaging or taking the sea oats. Folks once used them for rustic decoration in their beach homes.

Big fines for messing with them here in Florida. I saw on the news last night that the sheriff in neighboring county is waiting for special permission from the state to excavate within sea oats to search for a body at a known dump site.
