Canoe trip problems

My daughter and I went to the Saline River in Arkansas yesterday for a three day canoe trip. I knew from checking the river level that the river was running about 8 feet higher than normal, but we thought it would be alright. Other than temps over 100 degrees which made it hard to keep hydrated, the trip went fine until about 4:30 in the afternoon when we started trying to find a place to set up camp. All the sand and gravel bars we normally camp on were under water, so we decided to camp in the edge of the woods. We got out of the canoe and tried about a dozen spots to set up camp, but the mosquitoes were unbearable. You couldn't even breathe without getting mosquitoes in your nose and mouth.

After deciding we were going to have a very rough night if we stayed on the river we went on downstream until we finally got to a place where we could get a cell phone signal. I called a friend who lived in the area and got him to shuttle my vehicle to the closest launch ramp. We made it to the vehicle about 7:15 and packed up. We made it home about 10:30 last night. So instead of a good three day trip we had a pretty good LONG day trip; we had paddled 21.75 miles from about 10AM until 7:15PM. We will have to try again after the river gets to a normal level and the woods dry out enough to let the mosquitoes die out some.

You are 100% correct, they were worse yesterday than I have ever seen before.

We have, at this time of the year..blackflies latter we will have the mosquitoes but the blackflies are for me worse so many and so big that they are picking fights with the sparrows.
they have disected dead mooze who have died from their lungs being filled with black flies, a mesh head net and often a whole suit is in order. That and fly repellent (DEET)

Man that takes guts to venture out there during high water........everything looks different, landings aren't there, and the water is moving...(Don't ask me how I know this)
Glad y'all made it back, good example where last years trip can be today disaster.

Gnats and deer flies are bad here, not so much mosquitoes...yet.
BTW Safezone LLC has head nets as one of this months special....I use them for face camo in season, as well as bugs, works well and doesn't cost too much.

The skeeters were not bad, almost non-existent, on the river. But when you went into the woods it was a whole new ball game.

Yeah-what a pain mosquitoes are- and those we get in the U.K. are nothing compared to the brutes you get in hotter parts of the World. Has anyone done a study (they must have) to find out the consequences if we did get rid of them? Tough on a few bird species I would guess.
