What is a "Dude" in child'speaks defination.....???

If smoeone on a forum calls a 64 year old man a "Dude" what is he inferring.....?

I think your such a "Dude" means you are over dressed for ranch work, or you don't know how to saddle and ride a horse....Is that correct.......?

But I have a haunting feeling it is how SUB-Adults address Other Sub-adults (Children). Or how children age 9 to 15 address other children age 9 to 15. Is this also correct......?

Strange when I was growing up, "Dude" was a negative reference. Like check out the "Dude" with the New Cowboy clothes, trying to but his saddle on back-wards.

Had I called my father, "Hey Dude" I would have been picking myself up off the ground, and saying, "Sorry SIR".

Not just SUB-Adults. It's a very common slang term, many people use these days. If you think that is bad... Websters Dictionary has put LOL, BFF and many other text message short-hands into the Dictionary.

yeah, there is no inherent negative connotation associated with "dude", but rather the sentence itself. In my example, you're such a dude, can be positive or negative.
Historically, dude meant someone who was either over dressed for the occasion, or reference to stoners. Present terms it means the same as man, chief, guy, etc. Just a word to address someone without using their name. Though generally reserved for more specific instances or excitement or amazement, such as 'dude, that was awesome'. I actually used it quite a lot.
Whats up dude.
dude, ______________. (insert almost any sentence)
yo dude.

But i'm a fan of 80's long island slang terms too, including wicked and mint.

OK.....What is a "Jack Hole".......? I am thinking it is a hole in a small car bumper that you insert the Jack into.....???

I have kinda ran into the "Dude" thing on job sites, and the child speak seem to end at about 45, by and large it "twernt notin"..........
I guess I would rather be addressed as Dude, than Jackhole.......

When being waited on by a 16yr something at the Quicki Mart, and I respond with a "OMG", get a grin.......

well, its mostly due to censor programs. Even this site has it. Certain words become ******** when typed in. So new words were created or in the example I used, symbols are used. Though some programs pick up symbols too and censor it.

Hmm, musta picked up the symbols dude.

DUDE! a term used to express amazement. Like, the other day I was, like, walking down the street and this dude crossed the road and got splattered all over the place. I said "DUDE!" It was gnarly dude.

Dude is a passe term now. When it becomes part of the mainstream, it's time to move on. It's not cool and you're not cool when using it...unless it's meant in the original form as say, a dude ranch.

Haha, SD. Don't go down south man.

I was doing the wild west texas pawnshop job in 1999 and a guy walks in and says "What up dog?". I thought he was picking a fight and had to be told it was slang.

Calling someone a "dog" was fighting words in Appalachia. In Houston it was as common among certain groups as me calling you "man".

If you were a kid in the 80's then you used "dude". If you are younger than that, then it isn't a cool word anymore. If you use the word, then you are showing your age and lack of keeping up with the times. If you think it is a negative connotation, then you are really showing your age. ;)

'ight! I like that one, came after my time, but it makes my skin crawl. Sadly enough, so many people I see, even professional, use this word in their leisure time that I catch myself doing it.

Or, how about the devolution of brother into brougham, then to bro, bra, and finally to bru.

if it worked that way; the entire planet would be speaking one language. languages would be static and never evolve. sounds like an incredibly boring world to me.

"whut up with the hostility dude? Don't be hatin' dog, ah-ite?" Every generation has to recreate slang terms in the hopes that they are distancing themselves from the older adults that they come into contact with. Take the term "rap." Back in the '60s in meant to talk, to communicate, now it's a form of music. We've all done it when we were younger, here are some examples:

Using the term: "so I GO ..." as opposed to: "so I SAID..."

Hey man, I was, like, "GROOVIN", you dig?

Wow! that's HEAVY man! This was replaced at one time or another with: "AWESOME, DECENT, BOGUS, RIGHTEOUS, & SO ON"

I can go on but you get the picture. Ahh to be young again...& be able to speak a brand new language! :eek2:

here's how it breaks down:

nobody's cool. never will be; never were. the manner in which you use your language may identify you with a given time period, a given culture or sub-culture, to a lesser extent a given level of education or simply of 'give-a-damn' or just plain tickle your fancy - as when having a bit of fun at the expense of old-timers, youngsters, etc. might as well enjoy it when you can :D

I had to write a response to this poem in an American Literature class. My instructor told the class that Merwin was saying that we have become too simplified in our language and there are so many English words that are no longer used or understood by our youth. This has caused our culture to lose it's values and become 'dumbed down.' If this is in fact what Merwin is suggesting, I don't know. I have not asked him. Anyway, I replied that Merwin was wrong (if he was implying this) since language is fluid and always changing. New words are being created and new meanings are given to older words. I gave examples of new words, meanings and English flowing from Old English, to Middle English, and on to our present English. I argued my points and got an A.

"Dude," "Jack hole," "Dawg," and etc. are not offensive words themselves, but the context in the way they are used are the offenders.
