I was curious about soem opinions on this scenario:
Begin the "studly survivalists" this forum hosts, how do you being to teach kids about survival?
You sister-in-law is visiting and asks you take to take little johnny or suzie (5-7 years old) out for a short day hike, nearby your location. What do you tell them to pack? Do they carry their own gear? What skills do you first begin to discuss, while on your hike?
Water Conservation while Trekking?
"Hug a Tree" when lost?
Finding your way back home, basic navigation?
Signaling for help, whistle, etc?
I am sure most of us grew up this way, I am just wondering how you'd begin to teach some of this stuff to a child?
Thanks!
Actually I teach them how to make a fire with a small bow drill in a shallow pit, how to make a lean-to or hasty debris hut next, followed by water filtration if no water is on hand and if they got a water bottle only drink a quarter of the bottle a day to conserve it. Bring jerky or parched corn in bag in a pocket for food, Always have them carry a whistle, small knife (folder not over three inches when open I carry and show how to use), how to find North, and marking their trail so if lost someone can followand find them. This is if I'm with them, I'll have a regular survival kit on me. They carry their own gear so they learn how to carry it, pack it so its comfortable and they learn what to take. With small kids you gotta make fun and interesting or you lose their attention, check their agan before leaving to make sure they didn't take anything out to play with and set it down.
Good questions, AD. I started by just having my kids along at an early age. They are noisy with no attention span for the wilderness. Love to throw stuff, etc. You have to let them get some of that out of their system and let them migrate into the mind set. A kid is a kid and it doesn't happen the first, second or third time out. They have to learn the respect just like you learn any other survival skill. And you have to have patience with them.
Allow them to carry anything light that they want to carry. It may be their favorite transformer or doll or whatever. And talk about whatever you like to talk about. Point out different things in the wilderness like animal trails or different tracks. The more they are outside the more they begin to learn to be quiet and have respect for nature. Above all, set the example. If you see trash in the wilderness, pick it up and explain why it shouldn't be there.
It's a learning experience just like anything else.
Yes I agree with Rick, show the the different track, animals, and where they live, deer where they bed down, etc. And take them along as much as possible so they learn to work inside nature and respect it but not fear it.

When I was about that young (10 years ago, pretty fresh in my mind), my dad carried all of his stuff and the "community" stuff (stuff that we both used) and I carried what I used. It was simple as that, if you can't carry what you need to sleep outdoors for one night, then you shouldn't be sleeping outdoors.
Back then we only camped in places w/ a hose of some sort for water (mom didn't want me getting sick or whatnot). One of the most important things to discuss is use of knives and axes, teach them to cut away from their body (nothing ruins a trip more than a 5 year old who has a huge gash in his arm). As for axes, you should easily be able to judge if the kid is suitable enough to use it (only age 10+). As lots of kids that age have a stuffed animal of some sort they "need" to sleep w/, let them bring it but encourage them to keep it in the tent at all times.
Give them the loudest damned whistle you can find, so if they get lost you will know. They won't be able to learn to navigate too well, so don't bother to teach them that. Tell them if they get lost to stay where they are and blow that whistle immediately. Tell them if they stay where they are when they are lost and don't move, it increases their chance of getting found by 15x (not the actual statistic, but if it keeps them from getting lost, it's ok to lie).
As for water, do what my dad did and keep them in a place w/ a clean water source of some sort.

Rick brings a good point as well. To piggyback on his idea, I believe the best option is to go on hikes w/ them first, so they know how to respect nature a bit more before you let them live in it. It also gives them a bit of time to adjust to the way everything works out there.
Disagree with navigation part, when my son was 7 he could find his way using the sun and stars at night. He** at 7 he could take his toy gun and sweep and clear our four bedroom house in five minutes just like we did on SWAT, its all about teaching them, even though their little and young don't sell them short on remembering how to do things. Remember most kids have little fear, they'll try anything and remember it when they want too, I used to teach martial art to small kids ages 5 to 11 first class and they remembered the wrist locks, arm bars, throws, kicks, punches, and forms (kata's) very well when they had to, its about teaching things over and over again till they remember it without knowing they do.
Lost actually happened to my youngest son at about four years of age. He took off down a path hell bent for where ever despite my protests. I knew where we needed to turn but he didn't and just kept going. I literally tracked him for 30 minutes before I found him. He knew he was lost in just minutes and once I found him, he never did that again.
Kids want to know they are helping, even very young kids. If they want carry their Ninja Turtle or Benji the Jungle Girl backpack with them, let them. Put some light weight items inside and have fun.
Yup, make it fun cause that's how it should be.

True that Beowulf, but I was talking about kids who have not had much experience in the wild. As A-Doc said, "You sister-in-law is visiting and asks you take to take little johnny or suzie (5-7 years old)", so I am assuming it is a kid who doesn't have much experience.
EDIT: damn, you guys post way too fast for me to keep up
But you started with him at ground zero, right? He didn't know anything and had to learn from you at some point. AP offers some good suggestions. After my little fiasco, navigation and what to do when you are lost was on the learning list pretty darned quick.
Repeat post 8 & 9 and they'll remember it. Make it fun.

Yeah, if you make it a crappy experience for them they won't ever want to go again. And that's the opposite of what we want.
I didn't teach him to sweep & clear a house, he saw me do it in training over and over and picked it up by watching. But AP is correct I don't fault anything he said. If they are new I would teach them as I said, but each person teaches in his or her own way.
AD - The only thing in your post I would question is water conservation if you are speaking about a personal level. I would have to be in a bad situation to ever adhere to water conservation and it's probably one of the last things I would teach a kid. Water is just too important. How to make clean water and carry it first.
If your post is water conservation from a global perspective (how to avoid polluting water, etc.) then sure.

Beowulf, try bringing him on "bring your child to work day" :p
Headline in newspaper the next day: 7 year old takes down local meth lab with M-80
He'd love that but he's 15 now, we do weekend and week long treks together now and he loves them. Has his own flintlock .54 caliber and shoots real well, packs his own gear and I don't have to check it, its al about teaching and doing.
A hasty kid survival pack might include:
Emergency Reflective Solar Space Blanket
Emergency Rain Poncho
Whistle It is usually louder and more recognizable than a voice, but most importantly it is easier to blow a whistle than it is to yell. Also, you're voice won't last as long as the whistle. Plus, as they say many people that are thrown into survival situations are often embarrassed and it may be easier for someone especially a child to blow a whistle right off the bat than to start yelling. This is a very important part of a kids survival kit, or just to have attached to their shirt or jacket.
LED Flashlight or 2
You might also want to add a signal mirror to the kit. They are surprisingly effective at getting someones attention, even if they're in a plane. You could also easily and inexpensively add another flashlight to your kids survival kit.
One of those Small Water Filters sure would be nice to have.
Two more things to consider when you make kids survival kit are food and water. Although they are not the first priorities when you realize you're lost, they can provide quite a bit of comfort. Such as Survival Tabs or Food bars (you would have to repackage a small amount of either) or you could just put your childs favorite candy in the kids survival kit (if you don't think it will disappear when you're not looking) or a ziplock bag of orange slices. You could attach a bottle of water to your kids survival kit in many ways such as this Bottle carrier, this Bottle carrier, or you could add a Water pouches (small camal back to the kids survival kit. Depending on the age of the child you will of course be the one to determine if your Kids Survival Kit will contain fire starting materials or a Knife and even Water purification tabs. But for age 5 to 7 I wouldn't.

"Water conservation" was intended to reflect the age old saying of "a good hiker always finishes his or her hike with a half-full bottle of water". Meaning, to me, don;t drink all your water or supplies, so you havea a reserve in emergency scenarios.
Growing up in Arizona, this was a point that was constantly stressed to me. Maybe it was geographically dependent?
Great responses gang! Thanks!
Just teach'em and have fun, that's the main point Doc.
You know the effects of dehydration. Here in the Midwest, water is plentiful. Clean water is not. Drink all you want and purify all you drink.
When I was a small child, going out into the "wilderness" was basically a five minute walk from our back door. I started wandering off into the bush when I was still a toddler. Years later, my mom told me that she'd worry about me and my dad would respond "don't worry, he'll come back when he gets hungry"
When I was 6, my oldest brother started taking me small game hunting with a .22. Our second trip, we were probably about 5 miles from home and he found a nice spot and got me to help him build the fire, showing me how it's done, then handed me the .22 and told me that if I wanted lunch, I had to go get it. I did. One rabbit and one grouse. He taught me how to cook them on a spit.
I had pretty much the same attitude with my boys when they were small and when they got a bit older, around 7 and 8, I went out with them to see what they'd learned on their own and what I could help them with. In this day and age, I don't think parents can let their kids wander around like that so much, there's often worse than animals lurking in woodland areas, but here's something that can be fun for the adult. Take a kid out for a couple of miles hike, do the campfire and meal in the bush thing with the kid and then say "OK, you lead the way home." Most people will be mildy but pleasantly surprised at how well the child does, my memory seems to serve that the perspective I had as a child I probably paid more attention to my surroundings than I do now.
That's odd. My wife does that quite a bit. I always manage to find my way home. Good skill.

Really,Rick? Or is she just always telling you to get lost? ROTFLMAO
No. She just drives out a ways and says something like, "See what that is on the side of the road." Then drives off while I'm out checking. That woman is such a practical jokester.

Maybe she just thinks you need a bit more exercise..you know, chasing the car down the road
Hmmm. Good point. I am a bit of a Johny Butterbut with back fat on my arms (that is how Beo describes it, isn't it? He's soooo poetic).
