Hi, you can call me Kenny. I'm gonna use the sticky's introduction suggestions for the following...
Your Approximate Age: 16, though I'm not an immature twit like many others my age.

Your Gender: I'm actually a female. Bet you didn't expect that. ;D

Your Geographic Location: I live in Southern California, in the country. Makes self-sufficiency a good idea considering the gas prices 'round here.

Your Occupation: I'm a student (obviously). I'm working towards getting a job as a freelance programmer over the summer. That's pretty much it.

Your Prior Relevant Training: I'm intermediate with a recurve bow, though I'm working towards being able to not have to use a sight while shooting. I'm okay with rock climbing, but I need to work on upper body strength to become better. I'm a former cross country runner, so I have endurance, stamina, and excellent leg strength.

The Nature of Your Prior Experience: ...Oy. Okay, um, almost nothing. Yeah, my parents don't enjoy camping as much as I do so I rarely get the opportunity to. The longest I've been in the wilderness (with a tent) is about 3 days in the mountains during spring. I have absolutely NO experience being away from civilization besides that. I really wish I had more.

Your Level of Experience: beginner. Definitely a beginner.

Your Preparedness Planning: Can someone please explain to me what exactly this means?

Your Interests and Hobbies: hunting (bow and arrow). I'll be interested in how to create leather in the wilderness, and how to make knives and tools from scratch. I'm a novice at tracking, so I am very interested in studying the types of those as well.

Your Membership and Learning Objectives: my primary objective is to gain the skills and the expertise necessary to survive in the wilderness as long as needed. My secondary objective is to thrive in the circumstances. This all mainly applies to forest and hill-ish (I don't know the proper term) terrains.


That's pretty much it. I have no questions about anything at the moment except one. How can one avoid ants? I mean, if they're so hard to get rid of when we have poisons and traps, how can you avoid them when you're in the wilderness? That's my main phobia when it comes to laying on the ground. I've had ants crawl into my ears before. It's not fun.

Hello and welcome.

To avoid being bothered by ants - look for foraging trails (paths that ants are taking) and ant mounds (or nests) and do not sit or lie on or near them. Do not leave things on the ground or perched on a tree that they consider food. Don't bed down next to plants that have aphids and scales on them (they deposit food for ants). If you are tent camping - clear your sleeping and tent area of leaf litter and debris.
