Not really any info on what actually happened, but to answer your question - nope - nobody piloted my boats (don't currently own one). They may be at the helm with me right by their side, but unless and until I am comfortable with their skill and knowledge - nope - not unsupervised.

I would hope that the seafood company had some sort of training and boating safety program that they required them to take.

They really did not give that much information. I fish out of Whiskey Gulch several times a year. Cook inlet is over 20 miles across at that point and the wind can come out of the south right off the ocean with no protection at all. What most people don't know is the size of a swell is not as problematic as how steep it is and an ebb tide (out going) into a strong wind from the south can create steep waves in that area. I fish a channel about 7 miles out that drains Cook Inlet. Halibut lay in the bottom of that channel with thier mouths wide open to catch what comes to them. I go out at slack tide when the waters stands still. I make my best time on flat water in the Zodiac and then start bouncing a weight off the bottom until I feel a rocky bottom and then drift jigging with the current that keeps me in the channel. I only fish the first three hours of the ebb tide because the current gets stronger after that. I can handle some rough water in my Zodiac but it gets very wet and that water is cold. Several things could have happened and they involve pilot error. They could have beaten the boat apart pounding the waves, you always slow down in rough seas. They could have broached which can usually be avoided by tacking like you would a sailboat. The angle of attack lessens the steepness of the wave. They may have known that but didn't make proper turns in the trough. You have to cut throttle lay over the wheel and then apply throttle hard. They could have lost power but a wise Captain would have a sea anchor (drift sock) that would hold them into the wind. In small boats I've seen it so bad I just had to go where the water took me. With a power boat you can ride on the back sides of the waves and match speed for a smooth ride. In kayaks I have ridden the down hill side and man what a ride! Of coarse a kayak is decked over. My Zodiac has filled with so much water I could not get on step but it still floated high in the water but when you start taking on water in an open boat you go down! Even the unsinkable ones capsize with to much water in them. Did I mention that water is cold? It does not warm up just because its in your boat. My fathers Navy J boat could handle Cook inlet on its worst days but a open skiff? You better know what you are doing and that includes knowing when to stay on shore.

Reducing freeboard with weight worsens the situation leaving less room for error. I don't like open boats. It's the difference between a canoe and a kayak.

Getting in that over loaded boat was akin to getting into a vehicle with a knowingly impaired driver behind the wheel. Life, and often the length of it is all about the choices we make.

Put it together. Isn't that what I said probably happened. High winds, fast currents, rough seas and they began taking on water and sank. They just added overload to the mix. Open boats are just waiting for the right conditions to sink.
