GSG522 for Sneakin' Around When You Have To

After just a week, my new GSG 522 is more than I expected it to be. More accurate at 50yds than indicated using hard sights. I'd modify the rear site as soon as I could though. You shouldn't have to concentrate on the oddities of your sight and you really have to with the stock rear sight.

Shot all kinds of ammo through it - expensive and dirt cheap. NO PROBLEMS with over 3,000 rounds so far - no ftf or fte's!

Adding a reasonable scope on it this week - probably a red dot.

can be fitted with a Combat Arms multi-position extendable stock
uses some HK accessories
Carbine comes with a top scope mount - standard
handguard can be changed to a 3 position mount
Front grip can be attached as well as laser and flashlight

Cons:
Would be nice (but heavier) if all (nearly) were not polymer construction
Rear sling mount on standard stock is not sturdy enough for actual hard use
From Sling mount on trigger guard is too small to do much and very vulnerable
Larger charging handle would be nice (can add that accessory, too)
Too bad the silencer isn't real (but still makes a great looking and functional gun)

GET THEM WHILE YOU CAN............ J&G Sales has them on sale right now I think. Otherwise you'll pay about $400 for one. By the time you get a 10/22 up to the abilities/looks/functionality of this gun, you'll be up to about $600.

So your sure that thing works? I guess the one I got for my son is just the 10% of the rejects. It never went a whole 10rnd mag with out having to pry a miss fed round out of the breech. Im real glad your happy with yours though. I put the top pic. rail on this one and the collapsible stock with a red dot before I gave it to him for his 7th birthday. Looks cool he likes it just havent used it in 2 years cause of the jams.

Hmmm. Two years ago. You have one of the GSG 5 originals then and not a GSG 522. Supposed to be "the same" insides though. What ammo although I've shot everything from Federal to Winchester to Remington to subsonics of different loads all without a single failure. I'll ask around and see if I can come up with something for you. I do know they had some changes with a spring and firing pin plus the "charging handle" was somewhat of an issue, too and one point. Give me a little bit and I'll see what I can find for yours. Hopefully I can. GBless...........

That's about it. But it does have some level of "cool factor". Not "big enough" for ''big stuff'' and would not be my first choice for plucking red squirrels from the tree tops. I suspect the accuracy is just not gonna be there for 40-50 yard head shots on a golf ball sized target. "Cool" none the less. Heck, I wouldn't mind having one myself just for sh*ts and giggles. If I had to do a tac entry on a squirell den :rambo: there would be no question about it :gunsmilie:.

Two of my friends have them. I guess they need a "break in". Both of them had tons of jams, to start with. They wouldn't go more then 10 rounds without jamming. Over time, they jammed less and less. After a few hundred rounds, neither of them seem to be having any problems.

To me, they are just a $500 plastic .22. I'll pass. (But then again...I'm not into the "tacticool" stuff.)

I never got into "tactical" shooting as I understand it to be but just because it seems most useful in an urban setting. I can see the practicality of it in urban areas and know the importance of practice and training that could burn up a lot of lead the way they shoot so something like this could save a lot of money if a guy was really into it. I see no problem with "cool" as long as it is recognized as such. Some cool things can be very practical and those things are very cool.

Things men do don't have to have a reason or the reason falls under, "Just Because". I have lot's of cool toys that are of no practical use but they are mine and I know that I will use them some day. My wife has finally stopped asking, "What are you going to do with that?" because she knows the answer is always, "I'll use it some day."

Same thing for stopping and picking up tools that in the road. Every other man would just knowingly nod and be secretly envious while the women just get annoyed that traffic has come to a stop.

If you have to ask.....consider it, "Just Because."

I didn't buy this rifle for the "cool" thing. I did for the same reason as I bought the CMMG 22 conversion for my AR15 though. It's a lot cheaper to fire a days work of 22 rounds training than with the other rounds. I train myself as a tactical operator and help train tactical units and other tactically-oriented groups. We train a lot and shoot up lots of ammo.

The GSG 522 is as close to the size as what we use when we do have to do things "for real" and that makes it a GREAT training weapon. I guess we could just point an M4 or AR at a target inside a mock-up and say "bang." Just doesn't seem to be the same as when you can really fire and see where you hit your target, or when you really have to watch for the guys in front, behind or next to you so that you don't shoot them. That's what I say - isn't too cool. So, if using my tactically "cool" (which I didn't buy it for that reason nor any of the other 3 dozen firearms for either) will help me and my other officers from killing each other or the wrong guys in a bust, then I'm (and the rest of us) are GUILTY.

And, like someone in this thread said earlier "we just like what we buy because we want one." Incidentally, at 50 yards I can consistently put up 1.5" groups with this rifle. And, I shoot for a head sized target in different postures and cover - targeting from the front or rear the C4 or C5 vertebrae. If it takes me say, two or three rounds to hit it - it'll do the job quite handily.

Incidentally, I love my M4/AR with my launcher underneath and laser and strobe-enabled light. That and my cheap-a_ _ Mossberg 500 would be the two firearms I grabbed on my way out to trouble. Of course, I never go anywhere without my Glock 27 with extender mag and Crimson Trace Laser. Also, my choice of ammo would probably be a bit extreme for you as well - but I'm still here and will be when the smoke has cleared! Ten people in a two story house cooking meth and all armed with full auto weapons and a brain full of meth smoke has a way to make me consider ALL my options. Try it one day - I do as many of these kinds of busts as they'll let me! Keeps you sharp.

Good comment on URBAN but the same holds true for in the boonies. I WOULD NOT normally make a shot on a tango if it was over 100 yards away and he was not equipped with NG and other sophisticated gear. Same would be true if the Tango was 25 yards and I had good concealment. I'd let him pass. The key is choosing when I want to confront and on my terms and with very appropriate and unusual ammo sometimes. Different mindset in a real survival mode than target shooting or even the drug interdiction busts I do.

What aspects of tactical training do you believe would be of use in a wilderness setting? I study Arctic warfare and practice old style biathlon, learn what I can exposing myself to as many SERE trained guys and combat vets to learn all I can. I have the skills of most hunters but pretty much your average joe and make no claim to being any good at the things I work on only better than I would be without it. Keeping this in mind what types of things would you suggest offered in tactical training would be of use to me in an Arctic/Alpine/wilderness environment? Simple type things that could be easily learned.

Cetane: In the GSG, I had a couple of failures to load now but very very few. This is typical in MANY 22's with a 22LR bullet with a nose that is less than round. If the nose has an edge to it, the GSG doesn't like to load it. With most of the 22's they hang when feeding. The GSG cycles and fires beautifully when it's loaded properly. I'm now paying attention to the nose of the round and can almost predict the ones that will FTL.

Oil also helps out a lot on the GSG. It needs a little less friction to get the bolt back all the way. This probably explains why many owners say that the more they use the GSG the less problems they have with the FTE's/FTL's.

I've used the 22 Long Rifle Winchester Super-X Subsonic Truncated Cone Lead Hollow Point 40 Grain 1065 fps a lot now (over 3,00o rounds) and ALMOST to the point of saying it is my favorite. I need more time with the ammo in a dirty rifle to be absolutely sure thought. I've also had good luck with the CCbeeLong Rifles. All of these are subsonic rounds so 35 to 50 yards is about the use of it consistently accurate.

By the way, if you continue to be unhappy with your GSG, how much do you want for it? Many of my friends now want one.

I've heard of guys shooting over 300m with various 22's but the hold over is stupidly inaccurate. For that - I'd change rifles. But as the title of this thread suggests, my GSG 522 with this type ammo is great for "Sneakin' Around When You Have To."

I hope this helps and by the way, admiration from me teaching your young ones how to use a firearm. It is part of our heritage that we've earned and must fight to keep. Teach 'em the truth from the beginning - I am as well with my Granddaughter(9 been shooting for 3 years) and Grandson(5 been shooting for 2 years) as I have with all of my (well-rounded and well-adjusted) kids (grown now.)
