Sub-Sonic ammo test results (so far)

Results: All of the ammo (For me on this day) shot nearly the same size groups, with one exception being the "CCI CB Shorts". Which was a surprise for me.

In my opinion the CCI CB-Shots do not stabilize because of lack of bearing area with the rifling. And are only useful for use on a trap line for terminating wolves and wolverines. I do not recommend the CCI CB Shorts.

Remington "CBee22" Long Rifle ammo however uses the same weight bullet ( 33 Grains) at about the same velocity (740 Feet per second) However they use a "Truncated Cone" bullet which is a Hollow Point. This allows for much more contact with the rifling, which resulted in the same size group as the "Control" ammo, which was a 40 grain bullet going 1,255 FPS. The Remington CBee22 would be my choice, they do not call it "Sub-Sonic" they call it "Low Noise", my guess is because they also sell a ammo called "Subsonic". I tested this ammo also.

Also tested was the Remington "22Subsonic" ammo. This ammo is called sub sonic but it is NOT. it is much quieter than the Full power .22 Long Rifle ammo, but is noticeably louder than the CBee22 ammo. This ammo uses a 38 Grain hollow point bullet at 1,050 FPS. The groups were good, it is fairly quiet, and fairly powerful.

Conclusion: Remington "CBee22" the best choice of the ammo tested.

However I still want to test the 60 Grain Sub-Sonic ammo, as I think this ammo will give the best penetration.

So I wonder if the old ".22 short" is still called that.?....haven't bought any in years, but used to shoot them all the time when I was a kid, do have a few still laying around.
Last time I used them was for shooting winter rabbits thru the open window on the back door, that were girdling my apple tree.
Baby bottle nipple w/ an "X" cut in it, over the muzzle, helped keep the noise down, even more.

I'll have to look the next time I stop by the "Toy store".

Consistantly accurate too. After my tests I bought two bricks and have not experimented any further.

You must also keep them clean. And multi-use equipment is always handy.

Yes there is. It is called crossing the sound barrier.

The reason the term "sound barrier" exists is due to the vibration and instability pilots experienced when they approached this speed in airplanes. There is also a shock wave that follows the object that crosses the sound barrier.

As a bullet speeds through the barrier it encounters this compression and then when it slows back down it experiences it again. Therefore, a supersonic round can get two slambs as it crosses the sound barrier.

The most accurate rounds will be the ones that are not exposed to this shock. (subsonic .22, .45acp, 38spl)

The next most accurate will be rounds that go through the shock once but hit the target before they fall below the SB again. (most centerfire rifle rounds)

The least accurate will be rounds that cross once in positive acceleration and a second time in negitive acceleration. (9mm, .22 hi speed/hi-vel, extreme long range rifle shots)

This is also the reason that extreme long range riflemen prefer, pointed boat tailed bullets for their stability.

Our subsonic discussion has not confronted the fact that most of the very expensive .22 match ammo is subsonic. That $20 per box Eley and Midus is held to very tight tolerances and all of it is sub sonic. I also gives one a new preception of accuracy. I have a couple of rifles that will keep the Midus match ammo inside 1/4 inch at 25 yards and only slightly more than that at 50 yards. I shoot little of it just due to the price. Most of my "ammo hunting and experimentation" is done in a search for cheap ammo that will do almost as well at less price. But there is always a box of the Midus in the bottom of the shooting box for "special occasions".

One never knows when he will have to make a very quiet 50 yard shot with zero tolerance for error. I do hate those barn rats.

There is more to it but that is the general purpose explaination.

Hi all, I'm new to the group. The subject caught my eye and I wanted to pass on something I had read a few years ago that most people aren't aware of. There is the speed of sound that the object is moving at and there is the speed of sound that the air is moving at. To simplify it I will use 1200 FPS to be the speed of sound. In the case of a bullet, rocket, airplane or other aero dynamic object the air traveling around the object is actually moving faster then the object. This is easier to visualize if you picture a pointed rifle bullet. The air at the tip of the bullet must travel a longer distance because of the bullet's curve. In short, the bullet could actually be just under the speed of sound while the air moving around the bullet is at or above the speed of sound. If I remember correctly as it's been a while since I read the article. It's the air moving at the speed of sound or faster that causes the loud report. While for practical discussion it probably isn't that important as the bullets speed and the air moving around the bullet I would guess would be fairly close.

Let me start my post by saying I've done some subsonic shooting when my mission depended on it. The experts in this post are exactly right. Match grade in low and high caliber are usually all low noise subsonic. It kinda makes sense if you think hard about it but then again we live in a world where power seems to be the name of the game. All I can say is that the subsonic ammo worked in my missions and the accuracy was good enough to take out my target. GBless........
