I am thinking it might be helpfull to those who have no first hand experience with this to recieve feedback from those who have first hand experience. Much of what is feared for the future, could be a walk in the park as compaired to being at ground zero in the summers of 1965 through 1969 in many cities in America. I lived in Rochester, N.Y. and traveled for business to Newark, N.J. and Detroit, Mich. and other riot torn cities.
I will elaborate my experience of living in a rooming house in the heart of the riot district as the thread progresses. So do you have first hand experience at Riots and Civil unrest.
Here in Cincinnati we had a couple small riots, nothing to say much about but in 2001 we had a bad one for 3 days, as a Deputy Sheriff I was a frontline deterant and can say some bad stuff happened from looting to burning cars, to pulling people out of cars and beating them to throwing rocks and shooting at police and fire personal, but then when you shoot one rioter with bean bag round they wanna cry and say poice brutality, tell that to the guy you pulled from a car and beat half to death because of his skin color. In 1997 I went to Columbus for a police line between KKK members and a huge crowd that wanted the jackazzez to leave (I happen to agree) and we made about 30 to 40 arrests for people breaking the line and beating on the kkk idiots. Now I'm all for your right to demonstrate but preaching one race superior to another is a load of crap, anyway been through those two and the average law abiding citizen does just fine by staying out of it or some staying home. Most riot are caused by a loud mouth in the back yelling to those in front and working them up, when tshtf he ain't around. Personally I think if it doesn't concern you then stay out of it. But I also believe in your right to speak to mind but that dosn't mean speak on injuring people.

These are all activities that I, for one, tend to promote among our young people. Gets them out of the house....okay, I didn't mean that. Beo's point is a good one, avoidance if at all possible.
Or blend in and once done run away real fast. :D

Ah, seems like yesterday. Windows breaking, sirens, shouting, being trapped in a building for three days with 3/4 plywood over the doors(no windows for the first 3 floors), the fresh smell of tear gas in the air, then the stench of feet when the guard moved in to "rescue" me. Driving on the sidewalk, watching Airborne troops deploy on the Washington Monument grounds. Fixing bayonets on the kid's rifles, learning they didn't have any ammo???? The GOOD OLE DAYS IN OUR NATION'S CAPITOL on 12th St., NW just below Greyhound.

It is hard to run away if you are dirt poor, no money, no where to go. I was a student at R.I.T. and at the same time serving a four year Apprentiship to become a Journeyman Tool and Die Maker. I lived in the poorest part of Rochester, in a rooming house. The police would stop me at road blocks and say, "You can't go in there" into the burning riot torn area that I lived. They always let me go, after showing proof of residence. The riots would last all summer for year after year. But always ended with the cold and snow. You could smell the smoke when you awoke, the smoke of burning tires, cars, houses, and some shops; the burning of roof tar. It never seemed that the riots worked well for either side. The theory was that it was a relative safe outlet for frustration, rage, hatred, anger. So the riots were not suppressed. They were contained, but not suppressed. They would flare up on the weekends. Yes, I was scared, of what could happen; but no harm was ever done to me or my car, and I would have to drive around burning cars on their side or on their roof, and around a through gangs with baseball bats, and beer bottles, but mostly they were just drinking and shouting. They would stop me and say where the h*ll you think your going? I would tell them the same thing I had told the police. But they didn't want proof. Maybe they thought if you lived there, you were as much one of them as not one of them. I don't know what they thought.
But that was only half of the riots, the peace marches that would turn into anti-war riots. The campus anti-establishment riots. The taking over of Universities by students, the burning of Universities, the Kent State riots. The unwinding of a President of the United States of America. The killing of leaders, the killing of U.S.Presidential canidates. I have often wondered why Russia did not invade the U.S.A. as we had torn ourselves apart in the 1965 - 1969 period.
See? And folks are concerned the country is in bad shape. The never lived through the 60's did they?

Yes, I'm sure that a stern talking to by their guidance counsellor and these youngsters will start toeing the line again in no time. Speaking of mushrooms...I mean meth labs...Winnipeg police officers got in trouble in 2006 because they pulled a meth cook out of his house, stripped him down to his skivvies and hosed him down before they put him in a cruiser. It was November, so you know..his rights were all violated and stuff. They were afraid of him catching fire in the car! I'm with the cops on that one. Don't want police doin s##t like that to ya? Don't cook meth!

I was a teenager living on a farm in the summer of '65. It was my turn to stay with my Grand Parents that summer (Silver Springs MD). I can honestly say, I've never been so scared in all my life as I did when I found myself on 16th St. A trip to my Uncles a couple of weeks later does hold a close second. A cousin (years my junior) said that there were muggings & killings all around their HiRise (NYCity) but not to worry as I didn't appear 'threatening' in any way (totally vulnerable), but not a threat.. I almost spoiled myself when she later said we had to go 'up the street' to meet up with her Dad. I still haven't forgiven her for that.
You could have handed me a bale of weed, but hell i'z just a country boy and would have fed it to the cows. What did I know . . .
Things were way different then. I told my Mom I wanted a subscription to "Mother Earth News" and she thought I was talking about a porn magazine.

I was stationed in Long Beach during the LA riots. The wife and I lived in Culver City, right on the edge of the action. It basically boiled down to a group of people not liking the outcome of a trial, after that it turned into a free for all, a reason to torch buildings, mostly a big shopping spree. Sadly, I can see it happening again in the future.

I had forgotten that Beo and it does bring back memories, another war, another time. I worked nights and walked down to check out the "ladies" back then and I finished my social education and learned that you could kinda "persuade" the patriotic Weathermen when they tried to pop hoods & pull coil wires to tie up traffic May 1, the police looked the other way while you gently removed them from your path. CTracker during the real riots you couldn't get to Silver Springs, had to go across a bridge into VA where a hundred or so State Troopers checked your tags and did a little profiling(which we can't do today) to find out where you were going, then around the beltway to MD. Guess I might as well sniff some gas, light a joint and reflect on the '60s where it was more of a jungle than the other one we visited here in the good ole USA:D:D

You are correct and I should have clarified. It was the summer after the riots. Still much damage, burnt out buildings with twisted, melted & sagging I-Beams.
Still got the nasty looks & I was still scared. :eek:

Not very much interest in this subject. Which is a suprise to me. Also not many people with first hand experience.
Worked riot duty several times. Amazing thing to me was how slanted the national news reporting was. The reporters are personally very charming, and of course they invite you to talk freely about your feelings (we were warned beforehand and didn't say a thing). They film everything, and will show you what they've shot in their news RVs - and yet the pieces that end up on the evening news air according to a pre-selected agenda. Never one single shot of the hammer and sickle flags carried among the rioters.
Sorry guys, I was pretty young then. And I lived about a mile past no where.
