Re-Painting the Submarine....

I started vacation today...seems like I might have 10 days to frolic around in the SC Swamp...So, I i began to repaint my Swamp boat. We are excited about running the river and camping out. Look forward to more from the swamp!

I figure to be hidden from the side and if it is absolutely necassary I can be seen from above.

I still have to recover the seats!

Well...since you asked, there was this one time...I was running from a thinderbluster...She'll flat out run! 60 mph...empty with just me. That guy in the Triton didn't realize that and I was showing my butt! Anyhow he had a slim lead on me and turned off into Low Falls Landing...I figured on Going straight back to Packs Landing...Anyhow....I crossed his wake and went airborne...The tiller handle broke off as We re-entered the Santee Cooper River. I took the longest....Deepest dive of my life...I looked over my shoulder to see the Meat grinder circling above! Best part was my X wife...well one of them was still in the boat!

LOl! never lost it like that! and in fact the "X" was perfectly safe...All she had to do was pull the choke! Now there was this one time...I was on the Wataree River...I had her tied off to a willow tree...The river dropped...and it was a good 45ft. push to the water!! kinda muddy! I can tell some serious survival stories if ya'll really want to know...Things happen fast on the water!

Yes, actually two of them did. The littlest ones are my stepdaughter's I parented for 5 yrs, my daughters older sister. It has been painted many times since. I won't paint over them and Cheryl added hers this time around. Bought the boat in 2000. 11 years later it is in the same shape I bought it in after hundreds of trips out. That is the beauty of an all weld aluminum jon boat.

The " antifouling" is actually a hydrofoil, it greates lift and helps prevent cavitation as I run the motor a little high using a "jackplate". The paint is just fast dry enamel some colors are better than others....Aluminum don't like paint period. I just prep the surface to be really clean and spray it again every couple of years. It creates depth thus camouflage.

I do believe that you two are talking about two different things. NCO was asking about anti-fouling paint for the bottom of your boat which is designed to slow or inhibit the growth of water beasties on the boat. CS you were talking about the foil which will aid your boat in getting up on a plane.

Don't know if anti-fouling paint was used or not, but for a trailered boat that does not sit continually in the water it is probably not necessary.

So you are kinda liking the the hydrofoil?
I looking to add a prop guard on mine this year, like this or something similar.....Lots of logs, stumps, and gravel where we duck hunt.

I had it on an old deep V 20 ft Sport Craft. Pretty heavy boat that handled well off shore. I kept it out of the shallows. A few other smaller boats that I ran them on did well in shallow water - just that to watch the kelp getting hung up on it.

I like the Mack's River Runner, always figured on making one myself copying the design. Some concern though about drilling the skeg. The hydro foil itself has no effect at slow speeds or in shallows since for the most part your going slow. The jack plate IMO is the solution to your wanting to motor through the stump fields. The combination of the jackplate and hydrofoil is my solution to the stump infested Santee Cooper. I get on plane quicker and once on plane the motor is about 3" higher than stock. 3" eliminates 90% of obstacles I can't see. I keep the duck boat motor unlocked so it just pops up when I do hit an obstacle. I have sped accross exposed sandbars in this manner, about 6 ft. wide. Hunter, take a look at your motor. The anticavitation plate performs best when in perfect alignment with the bottom of the boat, you'll probably find you can add the jackplate and raise it 3" and improve overall performance. Note* There are also long and short shaft outboards, a long shaft outboard coupled with a shortshaft transom would really be bad in the swamp!
I run my fish and ski even higher utilizing a Raker prop which has been pitched and cupped at the machine shop. When at full throttle half of the prop is actually above the water, and sir! That there is just a plane fun eggbeater! Note you have to lower the water pickup to accomplish this. I also have my eye on the outboard mounted triple electric motors that would be sweet!

So far as antifouling paint, not a concern and of no consequence it is a trailered boat and used only in freshwater.

It is a 1983 Japanese made Mariner, which makes it a Yamaha 2 cyl. 40 hp. Believe me I know....Couldn't find my thread where I had sarted cleaning the carbs to no avail the upper carb flooded do to a leaky needle and seat thus the second try. I am rebuilding the carbs and got the wrong kits twice. Carbs wound up being manufactured in the 90's, so apparently have been swapped out. I got the motor used about 2002. Moral of the story -Do not put ethanol in a boat motor. Here they are with new floats, needles and seats. Going to consider replacing the jets now....

From what i can find you are correct about the under 40 hp mostly being Japanese and yeah, I noted several larger motors were actually Mercs' like you found out. The american made Mariners were mostly Mercury. Not sure there was really ever a Mariner manufactured Mariner.
