View Full Version : "Time" for a riddle,,,

One time, a famous detective (let's call him John) was given an assignment to find a very expensive crown that was stolen from a museum. After some investigations, John found that the thief that stole the crown, intended to use a time machine to go back to the time that the crown was made and sell it to some jeweler. John then uses his own time machine to follow the thief through time and eventually tracks him down and rescues the crown.

When John returns to his own time, he finds out that there actually wasn't any stolen crown, and nobody even knew of it's existence. Now, John knew that the crown originally belonged to a medieval king that got it from his jeweler. It didn't take long for him to realize that the thief was supposed to sell the crown to the jeweler, who would give it to the king, whose descendents would give it to the museum, where it would get stolen by the thief... etc. This was the time loop that the crown was stuck in.

Now, for the question:
If the crown is stuck in a loop, then when and by whom was it originally created.?

(btw,,, I read there is no known answer for this,,, ?? maybe y'all can come up with one ;))

This isn't a riddle as much as an ontological dilema. My answer - insofar as I could give one - would have to be supposed thief, though the premise allows for an origin at any point in history, given that the agent of the crown's deposition in the jewler's posession has a time machine. The premise is a bit vague.

The problem with "riddles" like this are they aren't riddles, they are paradoxes. A paradox by definition has no answer because of the said loop.

It also depends on what theory you subscribe to when it comes to time travel. That you can actually travel through time, create a paraodox, and destroy the universe. That once you go back in time, you create a new timeline, so the paradox no longer exists. That you don't actually travel through time, but through dimensions so you can't affect your own time line or create a paradox. That you can travel through time in your own timeline, try to create a paradox, but be stopped because written into the laws of the universe are laws that prevent paradoxes.

Yes, these are all real theories. I watch way too much Science, History, and Discovery channels.

No, I understand, its just often times paradoxes are passed of as riddles. A riddle has an answer, though the presentation of the so called facts of the riddle are meant to mislead you. Its a trick, not a pondering of unanswerable situations. By definition, a riddle must have an answer.

Now, if you want to discuss paradoxes, we can. I would just need to google a whole lot to find the physicist that have the theories about self correcting paradox and such.

Or we can go find some real riddles.

A good example of a classic riddle:
A blue house is made of blue bricks.
A yellow house is made of of yellow bricks.
An orange house is made of orange bricks.
A red house is made of red bricks.
What is a green house made of?

I know it isn't a riddle or a paradox, but did anybody read the Time Traveler's Wife? Very interesting premise. Didn't see the movie, though.

Personally, If I were the famous detective, I would have just gone back in time and shot my father then I wouldn't have to deal with the paradox.
