inShare.10 12:08 ET: Japan may raise the level of the nuke crisis to the most severe, according to Kyodo.

The government is also expected to expand the evacuation zone -- both signs that the crisis is getting worse, not better.

05:35 ET: On Sunday night -- before the latest 7.1 quake -- Japan's government was preparing to extend the evacuation zone to 19 miles, according to Asahi newspaper.

Meanwhile, the government is expected to change evacuation status from voluntary to mandatory, according to The Japan Times via NYT.

Some will say this is too little too late.

High radioactivity has been measured at farms and in seawater 25 miles from the nuclear plant. America and other foreign goverments issued a 37-mile advisory weeks ago.

Naoto Kan's party lost 70 local seats in elections on Sunday, partially due to its handling of the crisis.

The shock value is gone and we now live in a world of acceptable levels of radiation. We should shut them all down now while we still can. Imagine hundreds of these melting down with no one fighting the problem after collapse.

Wouldn't the logical thing for them to have done been to double or triple the evacuation zone from day one? Instead of just going with the minimum distance.

In my opinion, they were trying to save face, which is extremely important to the Japanese. However, at what cost? It definitely seems like it's too little, too late.

You have missed nothing. It is the modern equil to the "bread and circus" mentality of pre-fall Rome.

As long as they can keep the food stamps money on the plastic card and add enough to cover the cable bill the masses are under control.

Anyhoo, it is surprising how folks are generally desensitized to even the most extreme cases of destruction, even on a planetary level. It would be nice if those in a position to do so would put measures in place to make the sources of our energy safer. I think we have a castle in the sand mentallity when it comes to this.

The food stamp thing is dependent on you definition of "Unfortunate" and is recognized by most as another form of vote slavery.

The massive destruction desensitization is due to there not being a single thing we can do about the situation except put a can of soup in a basket somewhere to soothe our need to feel like we did something. We do not even have enough control over our own congress to stop the willful distruction of our own nation, much less feed a billion screaming Chineese or help the glowing (literally) Japaneese.

Putting nuke reactors on the "Ring of Fire" was not a good idea, it was not our idea, and it is not our fault. I feel bad about it but not guilty because it happened.

So, we talk aimlessly and wander from subject to subject because we are old retired guys with lots of time on our hands.

That about sums it up for me. In terms of what I have to do, it's a non-event. As horrible as the quake, tsunami and radiation issues are, it's not and never has been something I have to cope with. Life, as they say, goes on.

Japan is thinking about moving their capital because of the radiation, THAT'S BIG NEWS
and when Japan's economy starts crumbling, it may start a domino effect around the world

Listen, I've lived through atomic tests in Nevada when we were forbidden to play in or eat the snow because it was radioactive. I'll get more exposure to radiation in my next CAT scan that I will drinking a whole cow full of milk. It may come back to haunt me but I doubt it. Everyone was ape poop over Three Mile Island then Chernobyl now this. When I can see my way to the bathroom in the middle of the night without a light I'll worry. In the meantime I have thunderstorms moving in. I'll worry about those first.

They have squatters living in Chernobyl illigally. Wildlife roams there freely and reproduces with no ill effect. If Tokyo must be abandoned they did it to themselves by not admitting to a problem and dealing with it properly.

I also suspect that "The natural News" is a blogsite operated from someones' bedroom computer. Would you give them your CC number for a subscription? I can find you links to people that believe the Earth is flat, we never landed on the moon and Obama is doing a fine job

The Japs have simply waited way too long before declaring this event what it actually was, an uncontrolable meltdown. They should have started the capping operation on day 2 and everyone knew it then and knows it definately now. They have melted their own economy down trying to save face.

Our economy melting down in usinison? What, we go from 25% actual unemployment to 50%? How will we know, our government cooks the figures just like the Japs.

I would have worried about that 3 years ago. Now not so much. Mostly due to the Rick Syndrome, once known as the Billy Jack Effect, If someone kicks our economy in the head there is really not one thing we can do about it.

I am a prepper. If I could prevent flood, hurricane, power outage, nuke meltdowns, earthquakes, tidal waves and civil unrest I would not have to consider myself a prepper.

I am a prepper because I can not do one thing about a lot of things.

Rick we are dealing with a problem that was created by the inability of government to report facts truthfully, Jap or U.S. You know beyond a doubt that the Japs under reported the radiation and damage to their reactors. But you persist in believing the unemployment figures that are known to be under reported in our own nation.

I am talking about real unemployment Rick, Not the numbers for last week minus whatever they want to eliminate to keep it under 9%.

Everyone knows the reported figure is people collecting checks, not the real numbers which include all the folk that have run out of benefits, dropped out of the work force or have taken minimum wage jobs to replace their professional career incomes.

That last group is growing fast. I heard a report on the radio last week that had UNDEREMPLOYMENT (working part time or for less than normal pay scale for the occupation) at 47%.

there was a thread awhile back in which there was a post about a phone survey the gov does to check unemployment numbers. This survey takes in consideration those that are no longer eligible for benefits. I think it's B.S., there's a reason I believe this. Our county has over 20% unemployment, jobs are a hot topic. I work in the service industry. In my daily activities I meet and chat with many people. I have yet to meet a person that has been part of this survey.

You actually believe a 47% number? That doesn't even make sense. You accept that without understanding how the arrived at the numbers or if they even pulled it out of air? I think you guys believe what you want to believe. There's the numbers. Believe them if you want or don't. I don't have a dog in this fight.

Yeah? I've talked to a lot of folks in my life and no one I've ever talked to has won the lottery. So I don't believe it exists either. I don't know anyone that ever received a call from the Nelson ratings. So they don't exist either. You guys crack me up.

ok, so if there is five lottery winners in my county and the survey calls five households that will indicate the unemployment in my county? to be honest I have come across more lottery winners than I have ever come across that have been surveyed.

I don't think we have 47% unemployment but I do believe it's higher than 8.8%. There is something being lost in their figures, somewhere, somehow.
