Dental Floss

Would dental floss make good cord? I feel like it could have many uses.
We can carry up to like 11m of dental floss in an extremely restrained amount of space.
You guys think of any pros/cons for it? And alternative usages?

50 or 80 lb test, braided fishing line wraped onto a sewing bobbin would, IMO be better and save you space.

Here is my suggestion. Get some and try different things with it take pictures and then post your experiences and what you did with it here for all of us to enjoy.

The idea's simple, and I've stated it many times:
I am the kid with not much experience, and currently under the stress of a school-exam rush period, thus not having time to experiment anything.
You guys are the old sages full of experiences, by coming up with a simple idea and asking it in here, I can ensure myself a "field tested" comment, and even expect some "out-of-box" usage.
Finding simple applications with Google is easy. Now, finding the wisdom of the experiences on Google is kind of harder.
I'm saving myself time and effort. =/

And the ideas just come up in my head. I've started writing a Survival document (2 pages already!) which I'll copy by hand into a very small notebook I'll carry with me during my adventure once I'll have finished (and after making sure it's 100% legit = posting it in here and asking for feedbacks). The document will contain my equipment list, reminders for Food/Water/Shelter/Fire/Misc. elements, and some points on preparation and geographical informations.

This has been said many times over in a lot of threads but ill say it again no matter how many uses the forum comes up with for any items you may ask about will be useless unless you actually practice and know how to apply them. And if you were to use the search feature on the forum you would have a lot of info on this and many other topics
Trust me no one is trying to come across as hostile it just gets old answering questions that a simple search would give you what your looking for.

Payne, if you really want the benefit of sage advice of the members of THIS forum then search the topics you are interested in, which, believe it or not, have been covered before many times over. You seem to be under the impression that you're the first one who is bringing up...fill-in-the-blank.
People have thought of it, done it, improved on it, discovered new ways and wrote about it--all here, just for the measly investment of your time.
If you have time to post a new thread and read it, you have time to search. If you don't feel like it, don't blame people for not wanting to play fetch with you. This doesn't bode well for you being alone in the wilderness.

Yeah, what she said. Everything you've posted on have been covered multiple times. Just use that little ole search button at the top and you'll find tons of links. If you don't and still have a question, ask away. But letting us do your research for you doesn't teach you anything and you'll be just as new when it's over as when you started.

Payne - I really think that everybody wants you to be successful in your journey. Yeah there is some ribbing taking place, but generally we all want you to be successful. Please understand that there is a huge difference in learning about it on the Internet - even from those that have done it before - and doing it for yourself. Learning the theory is a good starting place, but it is just that - a starting place. You need to get out and actually do the things that you are learning about from here and elsewhere. I hope that your plans, following your University studies will include some field time and practice.

dental floss?
Its just plastic with a mint flavor or wax coated string.
Might as well just use some spider wire as some have suggested.
It's stronger and you can floss with it.:thumbup1:

Dental floss could certainly have some uses out in the boonies other than that for which is is intended, but it should never be carried to replace the old standard, authentic 550 paracord, seven strand type. Carry both. You'll find uses for both.

I've seen cord advertised as paracord but instead of seven strands it had a solid core. Not much use if the inner strands are needed.

If you find a commercial cord made by a military provider then their commercial cord and their MIL-C will be the same except for the price.

Ask your dentist for a floss card, it's the size of a credit card so it's easy to carry & like they say if you don't have anything else.

What I carry as a smaller cordage in addition to 550, is 0.6mm annealed iron wire, so called "jekkulanka". I learned to love the stuff in the army.

At times I carry black iron trapping wire. Not sure of the guage, maybe 14 guage. Hndy stuff though.

"Authentic," "genuine," "real," mil spec or commercial 550 paracord are the same thing, as you say. But... there is some "false" paracord sold in many outdoor or sporting goods outlets also.

A couple of years ago, my wife had a birthday party for me. One of the guests was a young man who knew I liked to "bust the boonies," but knew very little about the outdoors. He was not a hunter, camper, fisherman, etc. He gave me two 100' packages of so-called 550 paracord for a birthday gift. It was nylon outer, filled with five very thin, cheap fiber type strands. Poor quality, although he did not know it and I certainly didn't say anything but "Thank you very much. I'll use this out in the woods." It was all just "rope" to him.

Actually, my wife uses it to tie up her plants, bushes, shrubs, and we use it to tie up tomato plants, etc., in our garden. Works fine for those chores ... but I wouldn't put it in my day pack.

Be careful what you buy, folks. There is a difference. :nod:

I am perfectly able to determine how useful something is. And I hate memorizing stuff, and am usually creative.
As I've already stated, I open the threads to see if there are certain use I just didn't think of. You know, we can never be 100% sure we've thought of everything. >_>

I know for a fact that 45 rolls of dental floss will secure a loud mouthed recruit to the underside of the top bunk in an 80 man barracks. Plus it only took one piece of duct tape for the other 79 recruits to get a good nights sleep after the young man was securely tucked under his bed.

Any idea how much line you get on that thing?

If I remember - about fifty yards. I chucked up the bobbin in a drill and wound away. I think the roll of braided fishing line was 150 yards and I filled three bobbins for this go around.

What a great idea about using a drill. I've just always used the sewing machine to wind bobbins. I've learned a news one today thank Crash.

I tried the drill thing once. It took my wife two days to cut me free. It was ugly.

The trick is to use a variable speed drill, otherwise they'd still be trying to cut me out of my workshop.
